I think the Renault livery looks ok over some parts, but the huge area of white on the side pods makes it look fat. And that nose :yuck: . At least we are seeing some different interpretations of the new aero regs.

At least they have plenty of time to sort it out.

They already ran a shorter exhaust today at Mugello. In fact, it's said that the move to Mugello (instead of Algarve) has to do with the crack in the front wing - so they could fix things faster.

The Renault kinda looks like its nosecone cancels out the downforce made by the wing. I mean wouldn't that thing make lift? Jeez.

These things are too complex for this kind of speculation. Such a blunt area doesn't produce much drag (in subsonic speeds) compared to the other noses - and may actually produce a low-pressure zone there, thus creating some downforce.

lol wut?

Personally it is the only thing happening on Jan/20 that I can't wait for.

The Williams is by far the best-looking car so far. The livery - dark and unrevealing - probably helps, by preventing us from seeing all the truly horrible details, like on the Toyota and the frankly awful Ferrari.

The Renault, though... It might meet the FIA 2009 regulations, but has anyone checked the Geneva Convention? That thing is a war crime of ugly.

which reminds me, this codemasters 2009 F1 game should be, interesting :lol:

BMW-Sauber F1.09

Personally, I think it's a little underwhelming, almost as if the designers just took all the aero aids off the F1.08 and modified the nose and rear wing to meet 2009 regulations. I still think it looks a bit like a combine harvester from the front.

Ever since I have joined the forums, I have SO wanted to be the first to link to a new F1 car!

The BMW is uninspiring.

But I must be the only person on this planet who likes the new Renault, and it’s almost entirely because of the nose that I like it.

The BMW just looks like a bigger Formula BMW, not just because of the livery.

(And nice sig, Robin. Clever use of the new smilie ;) )

Thanks, I think I was the first and now the flood gates have opened! :sly:

As for the Renault I also agree that the livery colour scheme is its saving grace although I did like it 'pre ING' with just blue and yellow.

Robin.

I rather like Robin's sig too, but mostly because it has a link to my Gran Turismo: The Movie thread.

But I digress; I have no real point.

The nosecone on the R29 looks amazingly retarded (even though I like its uniqueness). The FW31 has a great shape... probably my current favourite for the 2009 season. But where's the sodding livery? And why have they decided to make the car #38?

Three, then.

Alonso: I don't dare to say this year's cars are ugly, they're just different. And Renault happens to be the most different of them all. I like that.

Having said that, I have mixed feelings. Renault have either come up with a brilliant, edge-cutting aerodynamic design (and hence the rigid, angular look), or just couldn't get the damn thing right and ended up with cartooney and underdeveloped lines (hence the... rigid, angular look). So I'm afraid they will either be on the very top or the very bottom of the grid.

Also, they look less of a french team and more of a spanish one, with those colors. Too much love for the spanish market, maybe? They will stand out like a clown in a funeral, that's for sure.

PD: So that makes three and a half. I'm not entirely in. :/

Not to get on the topic of this game but, I really wonder if they will even render the 09 cars championship as it's coming in the middle of it all.

That being said I don't think that the new cars look as bad as some feel. If anything the rear wing is the most distracting feature from certain angles, like on the ferrari. Otherwise very clean, almost starved:) appearance. Reminds me of 90s f1.

As explained multiple times both this year and previous years:
Williams don't unveil their proper racing livery till the first race, before that time they use a "testing" livery. They definitely did this, last year.

For example:
2008 "test" car:

2008 "race" car:

As for the car number "38", thats Nico Hulkenburg driving, and as a test driver, he gets the numbers after the original 20 drivers according to his team's position.
So, for a McLaren test driver, they get number 31 because they have the world champion, this is regardless of how many test drivers the team has, the car will always be number 31. The reason it doesn't start from a number closer to 20 or 22 is probably because they at least know they will never have over 30 cars on the grid, so they just reserve the numbers less than 30 for any teams that do join the original 10 (or 11).

Thanks for clearing up both the livery and car numbers, Ardius 👍 . I remembered the plain blue 2008 test car… but I must be getting it confused with the ‘show car’ version. Err, if it actually is any different. I'm looking forward to the seeing FW31's full livery then.

I didn't think I'd say this, but the 09 looks cooler. The comparison pics on page two changed my mind in favour of 09. I might be wrong though, it will probably be another thing watching them move.

Guys, Blake and I are now officially ecstatic about the 2009 season:

What's so special, you may ask? The rain. It may have rendered the past two days of testing worthless as far as information goes, but it allowed us, the fans, a peek into a vital part of the 2009 rules: the behavior of a car's wake. Take a look at the rooster-tail behind the Toro Rosso, and then at those behind the three 2009 cars: The difference is amazing. The wake is far less dense, and at the same time, also taller - meaning far less turbulence immediately behind the car! Looks like the OWG's suggestions worked. :D

Still, the aerodynamics on that Toro Rosso are amazing. That wake is killer. I guess we won't see such a big drafting advantage anymore either.

:odd:
Guess someone doesn't know what the new rules are for?

Damn that Williams looks fine. Renault livery kicks ass overall. I wonder what Renault livery on Williams car looks like.
