According to the Telegraph, AOL is preparing to shut down Bebo, maybe even as soon as next month.
The Telegraph
A source close to Bebo’s UK operations said they had been expecting the announcement as user figures had dropped from nearly 40 million per month worldwide, to just 12 million as of February 2010.
This means a near-70% drop for those who weren't bothered to do the maths. It's believed that users have left Bebo because its rival, Facebook, which is also having a negative effect on MySpace. So, I'm asking you, the GTPlanet community, is it good riddance or is it a sad loss for the Internet? (Personally I only use Bebo for vDream Racing - I'm about 2 weeks away from getting an achievement in it for logging in for 100 consecutive days!)

I don't even know anyone who uses/has used Bebo. So no real loss for me then.

All the kids that use the PCs in the library have a Bebo account. For that reason, i'd love to see it die.

I've only heard of Bebo, never been to the site, nor have I known anyone who has. I guess this is just another social networking site to die by Facebook's hands. Which gets me thinking. This is sort of off track, but it's still on topic. What will be the next Facebook? Maybe Friendster will finally have the spotlight.

The internet seems like it's one of the few realms where the concept of free-market enterprise really works. Certain things take off because they are inherently better. The stuff that's crap just disappears.

The best part of it all, is that it's mostly free to us.

ByebyeBebo.

I'm more shocked to see AOL is still in existence.

Social networking sites come and go, I'm guessing soon there will be a new site that turns Facebook into what MySpace is now.

I hope so. And soon. If I could go back in time to the day I got Facebook, and tell myself not to get it, I sure as hell would.

I haven't used Bebo in about 2 years, even though I occasionally still receive emails relating to my Bebo account that no longer exists, so when I go on the link it just says, "account unavailable" or something like that. It just always seemed like Facebook for kids.

And Chavs. :D

I thought we were talking about Bubo.

...I'll get my coat.

Bebo was very popular over here in Ireland and to some extent in Britain. At one point I think 1.5 million Irish people had a Bebo account. However, I'm aware that Bebo hasn't taken off in key markets such as America - even though "market" is a poor word to choose seeing as Bebo barely makes any money. I sort of regret Bebo's imminent demise because I have a lot of friends from school on Bebo. However, you've got to ask yourself: has South Park ever made fun of Bebo? No, they made fun of Facebook.

Social networking sites can make an absolute bomb, the only reason Bebo (probably don't) is because they've been failing to compete with competition in the various markets for a few years.

It's their own fault for being inept at business.

Being AOL I'm not surprised they haven't been updating Bebo to keep up with more up-to-date networking sites.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing it go. I've only ever known one person to use it, so it won't be a personal loss to me.

Even though we'd rather see AOL die ( :P), how come they don't try and sell it? A lot needs doing but there's a chance that some company might invest in it. There's always someone mad enough out there. :D

Actually they do seem to be suggesting that its sale might be an option, but to be honest it's not the code that these websites are bought for - it's the users (and therefore delicious advertising revenue). So it now depends on whether or not anyone's in the market for a website full of Irish chavs. I expect WKD will be on the phone shortly.

bebo always sucked as does myspace, I don't really like any social networking sites as the only one I have is facebook, for this reason I'd like to see it die.

Bebo is the chav version of Facebook. One guy I know got his car damaged and the police didn't have enough evidence to prosecute the guy who did it. He posted boasts about it on his Bebo page. It is also THE place to try and launch a rap career by dressing in a tracksuit and singing about guns and knives badly.

When they remove it they should gather most of the users together and slaughter them. That would be the real solution to most of the problems in the UK. Crime would drop dramatically.

Then why exactly do you have a Bebo instead of a Facebook?

Regarding the loss: Meh. I've got a Facebook. Barely.

Like some others have said, Bebo is for the derelict U18's that don't have the brains or skills to operate a facebook or myspace account. I'll pop open a beer if I do see it disappear from the net and laugh at all the youngins that can't log in there anymore. :D

I've got a Facebook profile too, but I'm trying not to get sucked in like Stan Marsh.

that used Bebo was Glanza-V.

So I'm glad to see it die.

Looking at his last post ever on this site, I can sorta agree with you. But Moglet's comment...

A bit extreme, don't you think?

Ehhhh no... Bebo is and was awful and the total number of brain cells of the people on it adds up to about 12 million... (refer to the quote in the first post to see what I'm getting at here ;))

I'm sorry, but bringing up that particular quote makes Moglet's proposal more acceptable if anything. I'm not convinced that shootings or robberies would decrease, but crimes against the English language would drop dramatically. And potting sheds would be safe once again, let's not forget.

 Yes it is, it was a joke!

However this country does need a major rethink of the legal system. Currently, you can steal a motorbike, get caught and then get fined less money than it costs to fill up an average family car with fuel.

Or you can sexually abuse and murder an innocent child then get the country to pay for a new identity for you as you're released from prison to commit more offences!

Brilliant!

The country is run by the chav population and it needs to be stopped.

I always thought of those social networking sites as pointless. Why do I want to tell someone precisely when and where I've had a dump?

Bebo has always been a low-rent, chavvy site where the English language is tortured beyond recognition. Bye Bye Bebo.
