I was sending some sets of gear to another GTP member, DriverSS, and while sending I got a message from him that the game would no longer let him empty his in-box because he had reached his item limit.

This is the first time I have ever heard of a limit to how many "items" a game save can have, and doing some searches here and on Google I also couldn't find anyone bringing this up.

The next question I had was what does GT5 consider an "item", and so he deleted different types of items, after deleting one he would then try and receive an item from his in-box. The results of this test was that all of the following count towards your total number of items:
  • Gear
  • Tuning Parts (not installed)
  • Horns
  • Paints
  • Tickets
* Cars and Museum Cards do not count towards your total which explains why they are not in the "Item" folder.

The next thing we tested for was on what would happen when you have reached your item limit and are then given your daily 10 paints...

The answer to that is that you do not "receive" your paints, and the game alerts you that you have reached your limit like it does when you try and receive an item from your in-box.

However, the game will continue to try and give you those paints each time you restart the game. So if it's important, you can delete items to make room for the new paints.

Unfortunately though, not only does the game not show you your total number of items you currently have, nor does it tell you what the limit is. It just tells you that you have reached it.

So he is currently trying to add everything up to see what the limit is, but the problem is the bloody paints! It's easy to add up all the car parts, horns, and gear, but adding all the thousands of paints is going to take a long time as the number shown in the game is not the total number of paints, but just the total "unique" paint chips. Making the matter worse, he apparently has thousands with a wide variety of repeats.

I suspect PD may not have thought any limit would be an issue, but with the recent addition of nearly 1,500 different racing gear items and the desire of some people to collect multiples of paints and gear, it appears someone people will soon if not already be reaching their limits and will have to start clearing out unwanted or unnecessary items.

Any way, I just thought others might want to know about this hidden item limit, especially for those who are huge paint chip collectors and gear collectors, as they can add up very quickly, especially if you have several multiples of each type.

UPDATE:

Confirmed that tickets, like all the other things in the "Item" folder also count towards the total.

After counting every item he has the limit appears to be 7,000.

Great news for "PD Fail" lovers everywhere! ;)

Forgive if I'm wrong, but last time I checked, the paints was the only item list which actually said how many items you actually have - It showed 256 paints and gave me the trophy even when I had some duplicates. When I checked I had exactly 256 non-unique paints

Much more difficult would be the outfits where it lists how many unique items you have, rather than the total number.

Be sure to let us know what you discover

It only happens when he hasn't actively received all the items within his own game, the inbox has a limit of 50. Its not a limit of how many you actually can have.

Hello, maybe this is off-topic, but after a lot of sending and receiving gears (of course I'm duping gears), most of my cars lost its thumbnail. Some in compact view, some in larger view, but the idea is, almost 90% of my cars don't have thumbnail anymore. I know I can solve this by refreshing the thumbnail, but come on, almost 800 of refreshing??? Is it just me, or it happen to wveryone else?

That's great news if true. I had always thought the number shown for paint chips was like everything else and only showed the number of unique paint chips, and not the total number including multiples.

If so, then yes, it will be much easier to get a grand total. Thanks! 👍

No... that's just the in-box item limit. The limit this thread is about is for the total number of items allowed in a game save. That's also why we tested what would happen if we met the item limit and then got our daily paints.

i always thought the paint number was how many unique chips you had.

check your number and have your friend send you some colors you already have and see it the count changes. im pretty sure it doesnt.

How big is the save game size of "the member"? Mine is atm at around 5,56 MB.

Less than 2MB (he has less than 200 cars), but he said he had thousands of paints and over 500 car parts (not sure why), in addition to a full set of 1,350 gear items that I sent him.

He is at work, but when he get's home tonight I'll see if he has gotten closer to adding everything up.

So what's the scoop with the displayed paint count... is it just unique paints or is it the grand total?

If it is just unique paints as I thought it was, then it may take a long time for him to add everything up.

No way. :)

I have currently 2000+ paints, 1350+ racing gear items, 2000 cars, 195+ horns & ~70% museum cards.

I think it must be something else as a "item limit".

Does he have a old PS3 with a small HDD (40 GB)? There was a other thread about some ram limitations.

Yes, me too and others also.
refresh the view can be an option ,but I had to create an new icon.
And some cars show the wrong color. So I have to refresh them to, it's idiot.

@Topic:

106 Trailer Tickets,2465 Paints,279+ Horns, 1500+ gear, all museum cards at least all double, 1300 cars and no problem with the inbox or received items!
Try to clean the temporary files of GT5, but I think you tried that already seen your GT5 experience. Will keep an eye on this problem and if it occurs to me.

Why so many car Parts? their all the same for every Car and you can buy them when you need. What if he deletes these ones,
Thx

As shown in the list, cars and museum cards did not affect the item limit, nor did I say anything about the size of the game save having any affect on the item limit, and seeing as how the size of a game save is mostly based on the number of cars and not items - using the size of a game save to try and guess your item count would be a mistake.

For instance, my game save is more than twice the size of his, yet he has a lot more items than I do, specifically paints. Where as I have over five times as many cars as he does.

Ok.

I am almost certain now the paint count is for how many unique colors and not the total amount of chips.

When you single out just the chrome, my count is 2, but i have 10 total chips.

The file size is more related to saved replays and pics than anything else. Sure your file gets bigger the more you get stuff, but having 1 or 486 black paint chips will not change anything significantly.

File size is not very relevant in this case imo.

Why would you want to have 1500+ racing gear items? Isn't it just parts that you did not install? I have not a single item, just paints (2500+), horns (185) and racing suits/helmets (?/?). My Save game file is 3.004MB with 830+ cars and i can still receive items like gift cards, cars, horns, and paints.

Hang on, am I reading this right? ZeGermanBastorD and Webwolf have over a thousand racing gear items?

How the hell did you get that many??

Are you sure that the replays & the pics are stored in the save game? Would be awesome. I thought it's saved on the HDD separately because they are too big. Btw. i have around 200 pics & 80 replays.

Just for your info: Racing Gear Items are helmets & suits ;)

You'll find your answer in my signature. Btw. it was a long journey.👍

Replays and pics are not part of the save game file. When mine went corrupt and i started over, the pictures and saves were still there.

I thought again about your pic & replay stored in the save game theory. And unless they are not micro small, compared to the export file size to the XMB (which is imo impossible), then i think no, they are stored separately on the HDD.

1 pic = ~300 KB, 200 pics = 60.000 KB or 58.59 MB

Which is 10x bigger as my game save (& the replays are not included). ;)

This is an interesting issue! I read that cars and museum Cards don't count.
So it's only what is in your ItemBox (gear,Tuning parts, Horns, paints and Tickets)

So I keep my tuning parts to a minimum and I will have some space till PD solves this with a update.

I have every Horn/Museum Card/ Of which there is many that I have 2/3 even 4 of them in ITEMS.
It shows 279 Horns but if I add all the extra,s up it could possibly be 350 or more
So am guessing that its the same for any of the ITEMS in game.

Lets take a small set of museum cards like Subaru shows 26 when full but I know I have 33 of them when counted indivually? 2 an 3 of some of the cards?

Plus with the cars I also have more than 2 on many of them so please just do not take any numbers in to account from any charts anywhere?

My guessing is that every single item would have to be counted?
Chat soon bye for now.:)

Museum cards and cars did not affect the item limit.

No but what am saying is that you may only be able to have so many of the ITEMS in the game.
So you would need to count every thing individually.
Cars
Tickets
Museum cards
Horns
Paints
Parts
Suits
Helmets
And when all these have been counted then you may have an UN-HIDDEN limit of what things you are allowed to own.
Chat soon mate bye for now.:)

E.G If 2 people have 5000 paints. and 1 of them likes museum cards and hits a UN- HIDDEN limit of 8000.
The other person may like cars and have 5000 paints and 3000 cars but both hit an UN-HIDDEN limit?

You lost me. As I said before, regarding this specific item limit, DriverSS and I already tested those items (except for tickets) to see which added to the limit and which didn't. Museum cards and cars did not, everything else did.

So thats good then.
The ITEM list has been defined by you on that theory. :) 👍
That saves us all time, So its a question of adding all the individual items.

Horns
Paints
Parts
Suits
Helmets

And hopefully car and tickets, Museum cards do not count to them?
And then by the looks of it we can find this UN-HIDDEN limit that PD have placed on what we can own.

Could you please post the complete item list (including everything) from DriverSS?

Else we are continuing going in a circle here. :)👍

Do the paints work in the same way has other ITEMS.
In the top corner for example it says 2000.
If I send a paint chip out that I have 25 gold chorme it go,s down by one?
Then doesn,t the total go down? To 1999.?
I can not check this becuase I have sent my paints already.LOL.
It would save on having to count all the chips he own,s.
