I was sending some sets of gear to another GTP member, DriverSS, and while sending I got a message from him that the game would no longer let him empty his in-box because he had reached his item limit.
This is the first time I have ever heard of a limit to how many "items" a game save can have, and doing some searches here and on Google I also couldn't find anyone bringing this up.
The next question I had was what does GT5 consider an "item", and so he deleted different types of items, after deleting one he would then try and receive an item from his in-box. The results of this test was that all of the following count towards your total number of items:
The next thing we tested for was on what would happen when you have reached your item limit and are then given your daily 10 paints...
The answer to that is that you do not "receive" your paints, and the game alerts you that you have reached your limit like it does when you try and receive an item from your in-box.
However, the game will continue to try and give you those paints each time you restart the game. So if it's important, you can delete items to make room for the new paints.
Unfortunately though, not only does the game not show you your total number of items you currently have, nor does it tell you what the limit is. It just tells you that you have reached it.
So he is currently trying to add everything up to see what the limit is, but the problem is the bloody paints! It's easy to add up all the car parts, horns, and gear, but adding all the thousands of paints is going to take a long time as the number shown in the game is not the total number of paints, but just the total "unique" paint chips. Making the matter worse, he apparently has thousands with a wide variety of repeats.
I suspect PD may not have thought any limit would be an issue, but with the recent addition of nearly 1,500 different racing gear items and the desire of some people to collect multiples of paints and gear, it appears someone people will soon if not already be reaching their limits and will have to start clearing out unwanted or unnecessary items.
Any way, I just thought others might want to know about this hidden item limit, especially for those who are huge paint chip collectors and gear collectors, as they can add up very quickly, especially if you have several multiples of each type.
UPDATE:
Confirmed that tickets, like all the other things in the "Item" folder also count towards the total.
After counting every item he has the limit appears to be 7,000.
