Nothing quite like having your privates handed right back to you on a silver platter from the Retail Gaming Industry.

As a backdrop: My PS2 has died. Or at the least, it seems. The motor that opperates the gyrations assembly has pretty much given up the ghost. This was announced in both my racing series and the WRS a while back.

Well, my girl, whom I'm so lucky to have :dopey:, took pity of my plight and rounded up a bunch of her older games and DVD's. She knows the pivotal role games mean in my life and she knows I'll need something for when she goes to Iraq (She's in the Air Force).

I did much of the same.
We took them into GameStop to exchange for store credit towards a new PS2.

Three of the 23 items were unopenned. The rest had all their manuals, all their discs, and were in very good condition. They rung up the items and told us that we attained $28.13 of store credit. Roughly $1.22 per item.

Now, you know what will happen?? In the next week or so, I'm betting, if I restop into their lovely establishment, I will see the various items being sold as "pre-owned" for prolly $9.99 and the unopenned games going for $12.99 and $15.99 as well as the DVD going for $19.99. :irked: My one friend looked at me and went later that eveing, "Why don't you set up a PayPal Charity on GTP? :D" You guys are civil but I dunno about charitable for some kid a new PS2...

Anyway, point of this being, (in a very roundabout way) Ever really get stiffed by the Industry? It can be any, not just what happened to me.👎

My coworker is actually quite good at this. Most recently, he took bunch of crappy games, traded them in for Xbox 360, whatever the bundle is called(not the core, but the other one). He even got some credits leftover, which he used for a game.

I have never sold anything to used record store, pawn shops, game shops, due to what you have experienced. I would get ripped off, so I never trade anything in........ except for cars, but I won't do that anymore either.

Everything I "cash in", I sell them on my own. On eBay, I have over 500 feedbacks(under same username), I also sell them to people I know. I make flyers. That's about it.

That is pretty bad. I traded my Sega Mega Drive about 4 years ago, with about 30-40 games, and maybe 10 PSOne games I stopped playing, all with manuals and boxed. And I got an XBox + 8$. The XBox was around 400$, so that wasn't a bad deal at all.

Only time I ever traded in games was when EBGames had a give three get one deal. I took in Gran Turismo 3 and two bargain bin games and got Gran Turismo 4.

About a year after the Gamecube came out my friend took in his N64, four controllers, and 5-10 games and they offered him $11 store credit. He didn't sell.

My girl got very ticked, but didn't say anything... Just took the Credit card and we left. We were at first going to hit up Electronic Botique but they wouldn't accept DVD's anymore. So we figured Gamestop would be better. :banghead: She later told me EB used to have a policy that "no matter what, the item was worth $6." :irked:

I dunno what she's gonna do with the credit, but promises we'll get the new PS2 sometime in the near future. :indiff:

I never support used game sales and would never think of "giving away" my games to those slimy bastards. You should have donated/sold the merch to a charity or library or a friend.

I'm not sure if i got ripped off or not, but here goes...

In mid-2006 i decided i wanted to get GT4. However i was low on cash, so i couldn't just walk into GAME and buy it. So i decided to trade some old games in that i didn't play anymore. I had like 6 games (about a quarter of my games at the time) that i felt i had to trade in. Now there were quite some good games in there. Among the 6 games were GTA III , Medal of Honour Frontline and GT4 : Prologue. I couldn't remember what else. When i was all set i went in-to GAME to trade them in. Those games should have got about £50 or £60. Instead they fetched just about £30. I just about by the skin of my teeth got GT4. I was dissapointed because they were all in very good condition, they had their manuals, no scratches on the disks etc. etc.
GT4 was thankfully such a good game that i didn't feel so bad after trading those great games in.

Moral Of The Story: Be careful, shops can rip you off.

Shops always rip you off, especially if you game is older than 6 months from release date.

I can't exactly call it getting "stiffed", but back in '92, Ice-T made an album with a band called "Body Count" or something like that. It had the infamous song, "Copkiller", which caused a minor uproar with the record company. The record company wanted future copies to delete the song. So apparently, the old copies were sought after.

Meanwhile, I'd bought the album before the commotion (it already existed on Ice-T's album "O.G.", anyhow), as did a friend of mine. After a year or so, I'd gotten tired of the album, and traded it in to my favorite record store, and received $5. Likewise, my buddy did too. About a month later, we're in the same record store again, and behind the glass counter, are two used copies of Copkiller. Presumably, they were ours at one point...but now, they were selling for $30 each.

We had a good laugh.

Not so much in gaming but in music since I'm a "singles whore" there was many times I had to get 99 cent CD singles. In gaming especially now since I'm more involved I'm very cautious when it comes to buying. Selling I do on my own like A6m5. I did the buy back thing at EB one time to get GT4 and while I didn't do so bad on it I feel bad because at the time I asked my firend if he wanted any of his games. Bottom line is if you don't feel you can get what you want for them then just keep them.

Nope man. Still in highschool. :irked: I'm holding off until after my girl goes to Iraq before I get into the workforce. Might as well enjoy her while she's still in the same country. After that, I'll be working in an apprenticeship program for a local trucking company.

I took games to trade at the local Gamestation a few weeks back, one of the games was the recently released "race: wtcc game" how much did I get for that? Well, I bought it for £14.99p new, I played it twice so still perfect condition...I got the total sum of 1p....1 measly pence...and I have the receipt. Yet the other day I took a few pc games to trade, including trackmania sunrise and just cause both bought for £9.99, i got £5 for each..

It such a stupid thing what they do, IMO save up a little longer, or sell your games at school... Don't forget to check at your local Walmart, Target, tescos, etc... They sometimes have better deals on buying.
I traded in a PSP for a measly $65 , but i had two and I need/wanted a PS2, I ate game stores :indiff:
good luck man

I don't understand why you went through with it. After they told the quoted price of $28, I would have walked out and took my business to ebay.. like I've done before.

Save up for a PS3 I guess...

@ Allianz: A. Single. Pence. You've gotta be kidding. I'd kill over that.
@ Tulok: As I am finding, it was a rather paltry result to a large problem. :grumpy:

Well, that's where a hint of pride kicked in. One of the workers was a friend I know in school. And to retain some shred of dignity I stupidly walked out. And as I aforementioned, Catie was pretty jacked to begin with. So we took what was handed to us and left. eBay from now on. :ouch:

Last time I checked, a record store here was selling Cop Killer for $60 AUS!

I got stiffed at a record collector's fair- I found the same CD, Cop Killer track was listed on the back, and I bought it specifically because it was supposed to be rare (I think I paid $20) - got home, and the track wasn't on the CD! Bastard switched it on me! :irked:
The record fair was packed up and gone by the end of the day, so there was no-one to go and complain to!:banghead:

I think that the guys who run these shops know you're desperate, and they will use that against you. eBay is your friend.

I bought a borked PS2 off eBay for £15. I repaired the laser enough so that it'd boot up GTA Vice City (but it didn't load San Andreas or GT4) and part-exed the console "accidentally" leaving the disc in the machine. They booted it up, it loaded GTAVC just fine, they decided that it was a working one and gave me £40 for it - and I got my disc back.

Good to see your Vice City disk isn’t just collecting dust Famine. 👍

Wow, I haven't used the buy back programs since I sold my SNES and ten games in order to get half off a PS and Gran Turismo years ago. I don't even remember how much I got back, just that it was enough to knock half the price off the Playstation.

Last time I sold games was when my wife and her friend had a yard sale and I sold a few PS2 games for $10 (or reasonable offer) and PS1 games for $3. One guy walked up with three PS2 games and asked if I would knock the price down so I made a deal for $20.

It sounds like nowadays anything is better than buy back programs. Of course, I would walk out if I got some of the bad deals you all are talking about. At a minimum say, "Is that the best you can do?" If they say it is tell them it isn't good enough, hesitate about three seconds to see if they go up, and then walk out with Ebay in mind.

Basically, if you get stiffed by the industry it is because you let them do it.

Jetboys427, how much are the used PS2s? I know most places have refurbished for $99, so used should be even cheaper. Honestly, apply for a job, work long enough to buy a PS2, and then quit. It wouldn't take long at minimum wage. Heck, check the paper for one-time jobs that pay enough. My retired dad occasionally delievers phone books for $300 cash per route. He also sells T-shirts at concerts with friends from church for about $600 a concert. One night/day of a non-tradtional independent job and you have a PS2 and a few extra games.

I repaired the laser enough so that it'd boot up GTA Vice City (but it didn't load San Andreas or GT4) and part-exed the console "accidentally" leaving the disc in the machine. Trick noted for future use. I think I know how I will get a PS3 without feeling guilty about the price.

Remind me to never do business with you.

Well, talking with the teacher here at my Vocational program.. There's chat that I'll be starting Co-op with a job in June.. Who knows. In the meantime, a mate is letting me borrow his old one after I helped him repair it about 5 months back. (He has a new Slimline as well.) I'm back in business for now. 👍

Seconding that business with Famine is a rather stupid idea. Clever idea on his behalf, however.

eBay from now on. 👍
