To defeat Porsche 906, which beat Nissan R380 an year ago, Nissan made three cars with a big bore engine. First two of them were made in a closed body, but the regulation change of Japan GP (Group 7 cars were accepted) led Nissan to make them in an open body. As a result, the body became lighter and improved its straight advance stability. The engine was Chevy V8, because Nissan could not make the engine before the race. The most distinctive feature of this car was the active rear spoiler, which was inspired by Chaparral 2F. The left and right spoilers could be moved separately up or down when the car turned, and both moved up when the car was braked. Seeing the spoiler, people called the car the monster bird.
R381 dominated the 1968 Japan GP, as its drivers Kunimitsu Takahashi earned a pole position, and Moto Kitano overlapped the second place, Porsche 910 and never lost the first place since Lap 21.
