A few weeks ago I traveled to Philadelphia, PA to visit an outstanding collection of race cars and sports cars. The collection owned by Dr. Fred Simeone is his personal collection he has put together and he displays it for the public to see. Once a month they have demonstration days and get 3 or 4 of the cars and run them around the parking lot, unfortunately we were there a week early. The collection ranges from the earliest car dating from 1909 up into the 1970's and contains a few cars that are extremely rare. I'll start off with the highlights and I will later add in some of the more of the collection. I will also list any major races the cars completed in, or anything unique about the cars.
Starting with the oldest car in the collection: The 1909 American Underslung
1937 Supercharged Cord
1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe - The 1st Daytona Coupe built, set many records at Bonneville Salt Flats, and has never been restored
1930 Bentley 4.5L Supercharged- Note the supercharger mounted on the front of the car.
1938 BMW 328
1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing
1926 Bugatti Type 35
1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900A- Came in second at the 1937 Mille Miglia and one of two in existence
1933 Alfa Romeo Monza
A Trio of Auburn Boat Tail Speedsters- Cream & Black is a 1928 8-88 Speedster, Maroon & Black is a 1933 V-12 12-165 Speedster(1 of 14 made), and the White one is 1935 851 Speedster
1956 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing
Extremely Rare Ferrari 365P- One of two made, notice the 3 seat arrangement with the driver in the middle
1970 Plymouth Superbird Roadrunner
Jaguar C-Type and D-Type
1958 Ferrari Testarossa
1963 Ferrari 250LM
1970 Porsche 917LH- Came in second at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, nicknamed the "Hippie Porsche"
1966 Ford GT MkII
1967 Ford MkIV
1959 Aston Martin DBR1- Won the 1958 Nurburgring 1000km driven by none other than Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jack Brabham, and was later raced twice by Jim Clark at Le Mans.
1938 Alfa Romeo 2900B MM- Won the 1938 Mille Milga, one of two intact cars of the four built.
And the last one for now, an also extremely rare 1936 Bugatti Type 57 G "Tank"- Only survivor of the 3 built, set speed records and won every race including the 1937 24 Hours of Le Mans.
My thanks to Dr. Simeone for displaying his outstanding collection of priceless automobiles that exemplify his phrase for defining the collection, "The Spirit of Competition." All the information about the cars comes directly from the placards by the vehicles. For more information on the museum please follow the link below.
