Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Happy Chappy

The latest set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races begins today as players gear up for the new Gran Turismo World Series season which starts this week.

It’s a regular set of three races this week, comprising a one-make event with Driver Rating updates turned off, and races for the core Gr.3 and Gr.4 categories — albeit switched about for this week. Unusually though there’s no road car event, as Race A focuses on a classic and unique racing machine.

There’s few race cars quite as “out-there” as the Chaparral 2J, which looks more or less like someone put wheels onto a washing machine. Its looks hide a lot though, as the 2J employed some clever tech to be the fastest car in the already wild Class 7 of Can-Am — sometimes by as much as 5% over its rivals.

That came courtesy of a suspension-actuated skirt system, made of Lexan, which formed a seal of sorts at the bottom of the car. Air was sucked out of that by pair of fans from tank engine, driven by its own two-stroke engine, to create something not far from a reverse hovercraft. Similar technology was used in the Red Bull X1 (later X2010), designed by Adrian Newey for Gran Turismo 5, and more recently the GMA T.50 supercar and McMurtry Speirling.

Sadly the 2J wasn’t very reliable, failing to finish in all but once race in its sole season of competition, but you don’t need to deal with such concerns in GT7. Just grab an example (or borrow one for the event, as it may be a while before it’s available again in Legends Cars), fit Racing Hard tires, and go for a six-lap blast around Monza — with this course variant lacking the first chicane, Rettifilo.

Watch out for the “false start check” on the grid start too. For this you’ll need to hold the car on the brakes or handbrake once the final start light comes on and until they go off to start the race. Moving before the start will result in a short, on-the-spot power cut penalty and may cause a big pile-up depending on how far up the field you are.

Races B and C both feature adjustable settings this week, with differential torque settings, suspension (spring frequency, damper compression and extension, and anti-roll bar), and brake balance all available for tweaks.

The Gr.3 cars run in this week’s Race B, which is a short-form version of the more engaging Race C we had a few weeks back. You’ll be returning to Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for just a four-lap blast on Racing Medium tires. There’s no other special considerations this week, so just get out and race this sprint effort.

That means it’s the Gr.4 cars in Race C, which heads to the fictional Dragon Trail Gardens for an 11-lap run, and you may need your tactical brain turned on for this.

There’s a combination of slightly softer Racing Medium tires and a middling 6x tire wear multiplier that will make some cars — the front- and all-wheel drive models — a little less appealing in terms of loss of grip throughout the race, despite the availability of adjustable settings.

However there’s also the consideration of the mandatory pit stop, which now appears the norm in Race C. You don’t need to take new tires or more fuel in the stop, just take a trip down the pit lane, but it does give you the option of sacrificing a couple of seconds for some fresh rubber if you wish. Failing to make the stop will earn you a one-minute penalty after the race.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, April 22.
