Shameless Link Baiting Drives GT5 Release Date Rumors

shame-on-you

If there’s one thing the “general” gaming press knows about Gran Turismo, it’s that big news about the series can drive lots of traffic.  Unfortunately, that’s exactly what is happening right now in the Internet rumor mill, and it’s getting fans everywhere stirred up for no good reason.  It all started when Play.com – an online games retailer with of no particular authority – listed Gran Turismo 5 as “due for release on 27/11/2009”.  This isn’t anything new or exciting, as pretty much everyone who has waited on a game to be released is well aware how retailers wrecklessly throw release dates around.  Until an official date comes along, it’s little more than someone’s best guess.

That didn’t stop TheSixthAxis from picking up the random date (via a NeoGAF forum post) and running with it, further sensationalizing the story with the matter-of-fact title, “Gran Turismo 5 Gets UK Release Date”.  Of course, the link was promptly posted to gaming news aggregation site N4G, and has since spread to VG247 and PSXExtreme.  It’s almost funny to see the authors slipping down the slippery slope of quoting retailer release dates, as they are suddenly forced to acknowledge (and link to) a seemingly endless sea of nonsense.

Indeed, it would be funny, if it wasn’t taken seriously by so many people.  Casual fans won’t read this article, nor will they pay much attention to the source of TheSixthAxis’ date.  When the official date is then released by Sony (say, March of 2010), people will become very upset, claiming the game has been further “delayed”.  In reality, though, no date was ever moved, nor was the game ever “pushed back” from anything other than their own personal expectations.  Be wary of the internet rumor mill surrounding GT5 – I hope you’ll continue to rely on GTPlanet for accurate, cited news about your favorite series.

UPDATE:  A Dutch PS3 site claims to have contacted Play.com, who said the release date was given to them by the publisher. If that’s true, not only is Sony releasing 5 of their biggest titles on the same day (according to other games on Play.com with the same November 27th release date…), but one of Sony’s own representatives lied when directly responding to all of this drama.

I totally agree with you Rike. I don’t mind waiting because this will probably be my #1 game for ages. I know that everybody wants a release date but I don’t think we should dwell on it too much, otherwise, like its happened to loads of us, we will get caught in this must storm of release dates from no good retailers. For now i’m only interested in the features that this amazing game will provide us with.

  2. Rike255

Good things happen to those who wait…and everytime I see GT5 in a headline for gaming news I almost piss my pants with excitement.

I will wait as long as needed for this game, but I think it’s in Sony’s best interest to release it (or at LEAST give it a date) before/during this Christmas season.

  3. Shokz

Not been checking the front page so hadn’t seen this – but i’m surprised false release dates have received so much publicity… And why Play.com specifically singled out here?

Every other site has a release date displayed as well; ShopTo.net’s, for example, says 25/09/2009…

  4. OnRoad

The proof was a Dutch site(PS3-Sense and PS3 Hype) from the update and they said UK not EU.But itsn’t true they have Uncharted 2 and MAG on the same date.I am from the Netherlands that’s why I said that.

  5. ido

The release date on play.com is nonsense. Sony wont be releasing 7 of their own published games on the same day.

There is no date whatsoever yet. Heck the stuff releasing sooner doesnt have any concrete info.

  6. DrBoyton

Thank you GT planet for providing reliable info. You’re the only ones I’d rely one for an accurate release date.

  7. Emmanuel

They will announce an official release date to the PUBLIC first… Not to a gaming website with no credible source other than “we got the release date from the manufacturer/producer” It’s not true…

  8. Nick Gregory (race'emhard on this site

‘sigh’ i’m still waiting on GT5, but it will be worth it. I just know it will. Don’t let me down PD!

  9. Emmanuel

lol they can write whatever they want wherever they want….that date had not been confirmed or denied yet by Sony Computer Entertainment and Polyphony Digital

  10. Northstar3914

As much as we know GT5 lacks dynamic weather and day/night cycles also.

Also, PR will make up for what a game lacks. It’s kind of like when you go to a small store because the service there is way better than the chain stores. That is what it is like with T10 and PD, with T10 the developers are part of the community and you feel like they actually care. With PD however the developers are like the CEO’s at one of the big chains, they couldn’t care less as long as you are spending your money there.

Despite having an active interaction with its fan and what is perhaps the best community driven game, Turn 10 still managed to not get everything right. I’m not saying that Forza 3 will be a huge dissapointment but other than the improved graphics (not so much out side of photomode) and the implementation of cockpit view, you still end up with 8 cars per race in SP and MP, no dynamic weather and no day/night cycle. What’s been added are features no one actually asked for (although the video editing is rather fine). My point is, PD has its own way of operating and it’s not Turn 10 and will never be like any other developers especailly a US based game developer. There’s only one person that call the shot and GT is his vision and as a fan while I sometimes question his method, I’ve come to appreciate it (his madness).

    Play.com’s answer to the dumb:

“Please be advised that the release date currently listed on the website, the 27th November 2009, is as given to us by the publisher / manufacturer or The Game. Should this release date change we will update the website accordingly, so it is worth checking Play.com periodically. Should this release date change we will update the website accordingly, so it is worth checking periodically Play.com.”

  13. Emmanuel

onroad…..proof? haha. Sony wouldnt do such things. You wanna know when the game will be released? Stay tuned to gtplanet cause it’s among the first to know when this baby will come out.

  14. Emmanuel

I never said this is not the correct date so stop being dumb, please. Christmas time is what we all are waiting for. If it is released that day it may just be a coincidence because online stores are NOT the first to know when a game is released. And play is no more a good store: they sell used games and customers receive the items after 2-3 weeks. Shopto has the supemacy

  15. jabofu

I am deeply dissapointed by Poliphony Digital. I bought my PS3 in mid 2008 with MGS4 and I was hoping to get GT5 in 2009. But still nothing…

The Problem is not that it will be released end of this year or in 2010. It is the lag of Information from PD and that they give a s**t about their costumers. And someone who doesnt care about other games or even dont know them is just stupid for me.

Every good company know about their competitors! But PD…

I will play Forza 2 and 3 untill GT5 will be released, but all the GT lovers here doesnt deserve this rubbish crap from PD. And i really dont get it why they started so late with GT5. They made 2-3 demos before develop the real deal? Big mistake.

But for me, i can wait for this masterpiece.

  16. Napoleon_Ist

ho i see, and just how do you know this is not the correct retail date ?

let me guess because it’s not a fency crypted bullshit like lord amar’s prophecies:

“when the win will blow up, the two big hills will get warmer and the dark mud will arise through the long tunnel”.

SCEA’s Jack Tretton and SCEE’s George Fornay have clearly hinted that GT5 is due to release by the end of the year during E3 interviews. late november is the perfect time for a xmas blockbuster.

  17. Emmanuel

don’t forget that Play.com is losing customers because they’re selling used games instead of new. So maybe this is all publicity to acquire new customers.

It’s funny how this kids whine about “it’s been developed for 5 years so I’ll pick up Forza”. The truth is they’ve only developing this game for about 2 1/2 years.”

utter bollocks, everything done since gt4 has been towards the next full game. GTHD as game may have been scrapped but the time used would not have been wasted, and prologue is merely a preview of the game currently in development, the timer doesn’t restart, it merely keeps the fans happy for a bit

  19. Wheel Nut

Im confused, regarding leakage or a non proofed date for release being in November.
Why is the article branding the announcement as “shameless” when this very same website made BIG news of “Amars” cryptic message and no doubt GTP got many links and attention from that. At the same time even reporting this new information GTP still benifits by reporting it as “shameless” Let the people themselves decide and if ones take it for granted then thats their fault untill a verified official release is announced.

Not trying to discredit “Amar” but point is he stated such a timeline would also of been forth coming, not only that but a worldwide release. Japan does have TGS and the Tokyo motor show coming around end OCT/NOV and chances are thats when the next batch of proper information may arrive or even a proper showing of the game and if were lucky a release date.

Playstation UK Magazine has the game listed for December Release and the new issue as reported has aparently more details coming in their July 7th issue.

One things for sure though, the release date can only keep getting closer….

  20. RaLpH89

It’s funny how this kids whine about “it’s been developed for 5 years so I’ll pick up Forza”. The truth is they’ve only developing this game for about 2 1/2 years. It’s starts with GTHD 1.0 then 1.2 back in 2006 which they scraped by the way, and then GT5 prologue on 2007 then continue to GT5. The GTHD classic is not included, because it’s part GT4/Tourist Trophy back in 2005 E3 which is a concept for GT5. And being delayed? They’ve never mention any release date ever since. Tired of people complaining like it’s the end of the world saying it’s been “Delayed”, but never seen any official release date. Blame a games like MGS4, FF13,or GTAIV for not sticking to their “official” release date.

  21. RADracing

Like Kaz has said before they can release it anytime. So we can be surprised to see it released earlier than expected. Hopefully!!!

  22. Dom

To be fair to Play, they’ve simply moved the dates further and further back as the wait became longer and longer, they’ve always offered the facility to pre-order games (probably to judge interest and required volumes) and they have to put some sort of release date even if it’s not accurate. I think perhaps this time around when they’ve shifted their date back again, as we’ve now seen a official GT5 trailer people are clutching at straws because we’ve all waited SO long. We all know not to believe a single word anybody says until it’s from the horses mouth, and even that’s not been a guarantee from past experience. Comments like ‘we can release GT5 anytime we want’ doesn’t really help either!

  23. Aaron

im waiting tooo long….i jus hope they implemented everything like the weather and stuff..cause i will be really pissed for waiting so long for the goods…

  24. Jordan

@Northstar3914: I’m not blaming the fans – indeed, the lack of interaction from the developer opens the door to this sort of thing. That’s no an excuse for misleading headlines, though.

  25. Northstar3914

Can you honestly blame them though? We have waited for 5 years and so far we have a demo and a 2 minute clip. This is what happens when a super loyal fanbase is mixed with a publisher that doesn’t do much interacting. People look for anything they can that might be a tidbit on information on the full game.
