Beautiful Gran Turismo PSP 60FPS Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNr9UEhRPYk

With typical online videos, you’re stuck at 30 frames-per-second.  That’s fine with most content, but when you’re talking about Gran Turismo PSP, it’s just not quite good enough. Fortunately, the video experts at Digital Foundry (you might remember them from their video performance analysis of GT5 Prologue) got hold of a GT PSP review copy and captured a pure, accurate 60 FPS video feed from the portable hardware. The result is some of the best-looking in-game replay footage you’ve seen. Note: the YouTube embed above is not running in 30 FPS – click through to Digital Foundry’s website to stream the video in its true quality and framerate.

Aside from the impressive visuals, DF offers some insight into just how Polyphony Digital managed to pull off 60 FPS on such meager hardware:

…the game uses the smallest frame buffer available to the [PSP], resulting in a stippled, dithered look to the visuals. […] This format means lower memory usage, lower bandwidth requirements and frees up a lot of fill-rate – all essential in getting GT running at 60FPS. Next up, the tracks have been pared down – most notably through the use of lower resolution textures. The impact on the image quality here very much varies from track to track: the detail-rich cities look a bit odd, whereas the rest of the courses look fine. Crucially however, the actual geography of the circuits is absolutely authentic to the original console versions.

Their time with the game has revaled a few more features, such as MP3 playback during gameplay, or the ability to install the game directly to a memory stick if you don’t want to worry about losing the UMD disc.  They also appreciated “tweaked colour profiles specific for the integrated display and […] TV-out”.  Thanks for the quality video clip, guys – keep ’em coming!  (Thanks to everyone who sent this in, as well!)

Hold on with the bugatti sound… i’ve heard a few bugatti flyby’s on youtube and the funny is you hear no bugatti. so maybe are 2 other cars that you hear on the trailer??

  2. GT4Ever

Well basicly PD did a good job by getting the engine running on a PSP. But the content is just rubish (and probably the feutures aswell). But thats what makes it a GT game!

    @Sam__ NY Says:
If the sounds on the video was record off the speakers of the PSP then you might be right.
But if the sound is transfered directly out of the audio port via head phone jack or what ever then the sound quality has to be as good as bigger platform.
We are not comparing the speaker capability but how it actually might sound originally.

  4. The Masfer

It’s only or the psp you can’t expect it to be a good as a full game. It’s just like prologue with more cars and tracks.

vivian is right i have heard a veyron in real life at top gear live and it sounds more like a grumble. in the video it sounds like a ferrari or a tuned skyline

  6. khamseen

sounds in gt are just too pure. there are not enough ambient, car shaking sounds and that exhaust roar is just not realistic.

  7. Vivian

well there where drunk when they put a sound to the veyron??!?!??!?!??! how wrong can you have?!?!?!?!?!

@gt3luke, that was a concept model of Audi named: Nuvolari Quattro what later became the audi A5 ;) such as the concept model of the R8: LeMans Quattro.

@NGrignon: Hmmm, ya k that was pretty good but those were sounds you’d get from a race car, not a production car like we say in the video, and like i said the PSP speakers are much smaller and not very good.

a better comparison would be the GT5 concept trailer engine noises with NFS SHIFT noises, you wont hear much of a difference.

    GT5 concept trailer 0:53 seconds.

To come back on the subject: even with its flaws, GT PSP seems to be the Graal that every serious PSP drivers (attracted by the fidelity of the simulation) waited in a very RARE genre for this console: Codemasters Toca 2 and CMR 2005+ were really the only ones of their kind on the PSP that we could call a Sim-lite…

I will be one of the first to buy GT PSP… even if it’s a mix of GT4 and GT5P gameplays: A simulator is too rare on the PSP to miss the opportunity.

  10. NGrignon

@Sam: sorry but they don’t… taking sounds from a studio is not the same than taking them on the road… GT is maybe the reference in graphics but they are terribly retarded as far as sounds is concerned. if you want to hear what a REAL RACING car sounds: here something for you recorded at LE MANS during a practice session: http://ngrignon.free.fr/motor.mp3

which is pretty well translated in NFS:SHIFT (“roar and power” engine sounds)

  11. AngerdX

Already preorderd this, as far as a psp game this is impressive no matter what some here say, i never thought they would manage to put a GT game on it but somehow they did and it looks damn good considering the hardware.

  12. Sam__NY

    @NGrignon

No da NFS Shift sounds great because the car sounds are completely artificial. The cars in GT PSP are what the cars real sound like, and you gotta consider the speakers in a PSP aren’t nearly as good as your tv speakers.

  13. NGrignon

especially this one (NFS:SHIFT): hear the deceleration of the Bugatti just before the crash or the Aston in the tunnel… the sounds in general in this game is marvelous!!!

  14. Enciah

    @NGrignon
Of course for ps3 or pc! I do not compare GTpsp and NFS shift PC/ps3…It was just a personal comment about the way I will wait for GT5^^

  15. GT4Ever

Yep its just almost like GT4. Some people would consider that a good point. But the best thing about GT4 is the GT mode.
This is like GT4 without GT mode and the ability to tune cars. And that aint a good point, since that leaves boring gameplay and bad sound. Yeah 800 cars is impressive, but they could put a little more efford in updating some of the cars. Cars that get new versions every few years should at least be updated. But it looks like we got only all the old model cars like 2003 Ford Focus, 2003 Honda Civic, etc. Why didnt they update them to the more recent model years?

Yeah it is impressive what PD did with the PSP. But its more like a GT4 emulator than a new game. And if the cars are indeed tradeable with GT5 i’m affraid we will see a lot of old crap models in GT5.

  16. Sam__NY

PD takes every car in the game to the studio to get the sound of the engine recorded. So maybe the Veyrons really do sound like that.

  17. NGrignon

Sound was never the greates point of GT5… so with lower sized sample for the handheld, don’t expect much. (I don’t).

  18. NGrignon

@Enciah “It’ll be NFS shift and not GTPSP+PSP!” SHIFT for the next gen or PC because the PSP NFS:SHIFT is a fluke (more like a bad pro-street than the SHIFT experience: there is even NO GAME DESIGN NOR GAMEPLAY related to SHIFT in the PSP release: it’s TERRIBLE!)

  19. MarcoM
, or the ability to install the game directly to a memory stick if you don’t want to worry about losing the UMD disc.
I think the ability to install it from UMD onto the memory stick will have you put the UMD in the psp. Otherwise copyprotection would be really easy to bypass.

Probably the umd has to be in there at startup of the game to check whether your version of GT psp is legit.

  20. gt3luke

    No the veyron sounds horrible.
At 0:28 i think that’s an new Audi A4 in white or A5. But it looks like a car i haven’t seen before in a gt game.

  21. Nomino

    “Did i just saw a Porsche ???”
    “Sorry, Gerath, I think that’s a RUF.”

    Oh dear…

Anyway, it’s nice to see this in all its low-res glory, rather than the artificially polished up screen redners that you see. In reality, it does not look that impressive – Ridge Racer looks just as nice and that’s well old in comparison.

  22. RedBaron

It’s great achievement, but I can’t hear the Countach if it sounds right, Veyrons are mewling like kittens and they mention the tearing, which is horrible in Prologue too.
