BMW M4 Safety Car Coming to Gran Turismo 6

Gran Turismo 6

A new safety car – the first for the series since the Nissan R34 GT-R Pace Car was released in 2002 – is coming to Gran Turismo 6. It’s based on the BMW M4 “M Performance Division”, and will be officially revealed at SEMA 2014 in Las Vegas this week.

Gran Turismo 6

The car will become available in the next update for the game, which will also introduce new tuning parts and options for the base model of M4 Coupé. Additional customization options will include painted kidney grills, larger wheel sizes, hood pins, and additional aero parts.

There is still no word on exactly when the next game update will be released. Stay tuned for more news from SEMA this week as Polyphony Digital’s modeling team visits the car show in Las Vegas…

Shouldn’t this had dropped today or was I reading the original article wrong? Not the one posted here but the one that sema posted on fb

  2. jhw93

To be honest I am not too bothered by this new car, I’d rather have a completely new car or existing standard car that has been re-modeled. However, as I have said before, all new cars are welcome.

Don’t see why one or two people think this is all we are getting for the next update, this article is not about the next update, it’s about the M4 safety car. Mr. Kaz said ‘big’ updates so I doubt this car and I few car upgrades is all we are getting. For new updates I’d just like to see more cars and tracks really, the game doesn’t need anything radical to keep my interest. I have already got what I wanted out of the game, I just need something to keep me coming back to GT6 now and again until GT7 parks itself on shelves.

    1. Tenacious D

      Wow… you’re even more content with GT6 than I am! ;D

I have to say that new cars and tracks are always nice additions to a racing game as long as they integrate well. But in the case of GT6, I have to sympathize a bit with the grouchers who have a point. A lot of things were told us by Kaz as things he intended to work on for GT6, and a few things alluded to. These are my key points:

      – An online structure that supports user created clubs and racing leagues, even to the tools enabling the creation of mini racing seasons with championships.
      – An Event Maker, necessary for the creation of those online track days, single races, and league racing. And which should also function in single player offline mode.
      – Course Maker II, which could add endlessly to the track count, and be useful in online leagues as well.
      – Race Mod, which is the logical conclusion of any mod system for racing cars.
      – Livery Editor, which is almost essential for the creation of unique online racing identities, such as in clubs and leagues.

Just giving us one of those things in GT6, the Event Maker, would enable us to expand the single player game indefinitely. That and the Course Maker would have many of us happily tinkering with GT6 even until GT7 was released.

On that note, I’ll have to repeat that even though I’d love to see things added to GT6, I still see it as a dead end game which can’t be enhanced all that much on an old system. If GT6 was sacrificed with just a few new enhancements in order to get GT7 here by sometime next year, I’d be a very happy camper in Gran Turismo Land.

    2. Johnnypenso

Paaaarfect. You want PD to continue working on the game adding the features they told us at the time of purchase they would deliver later, but you acknowledge that the game is a dead end and you’d happily GT6 in order to get the next game sometime next year. You literally have all almost all the bases covered with this one, well done. Next time don’t forget to add that you want them to take their time with GT7 so you’re ok with sacrificing GT6 if necessary but not releasing GT7 until 2016/2017 just so long as it’s paaaaaarfect.

I’m sure we’re all very happy that you’re willing to throw all 3+million purchasers of GT6 under the bus by sacrificing GT6. I’m sure the fans will be just chomping at the bit to buy GT7 if that happens because it will send such a wonderful corporate message from PD to it’s fans. WE LOVE YOU….but….yeah…not so much.

      /s

    3. Johnnypenso

Bias has nothing to do with it, it’s all there in black and white. Here, I’ll quote it for you in case you missed it.

I’ll have to repeat that even though I’d love to see things added to GT6, I STILL SEE IT AS A DEAD END GAME which can’t be enhanced all that much on an old system. IF GT6 WAS SACRIFICED WITH JUST A FEW ENHANCEMENTS IN ORDER TO GET GT7 HERE BY SOMETIMES NEXT YEAR I’D BE A VERY HAPPY CAMPER in Gran Turismo Land.

  3. mikronimo

I hope, that “the next update for the game, will also introduce new tuning parts and options for the base model of M4 Coupé” means a full (suspension, engine, gears, etc.) customization possibility… in that case, it was about time… and really thanks PD. :)

  4. fghwe3

I am quietly grateful for any car that is added to the game that has not been promised(like the vision GT cars).
Usually PD do not do previews like this unless an update is happening soon. I know that alpine have released some teasers pics on twitter, and its been a while since an update…

    1. RACECAR

Well if you are running (or racing) in a league that uses full course cautions, then this car is a welcome sight (especially if you’ve grown tired of the Skyline GT-R).

    2. stupidstormy36

The R34 really looks more like a tuner rather than a Safety Car to me anyways. This M4 Safety Car looks more like a real Safety Car (minus the lights on top, which brings up a question for me). It would be great for online race clubs, events, or series. I’m not waiting on a new DTM car as it seems that Polyphony isn’t really interested in any new DTM content.

    1. warpkez

Yes, but nowhere does it say whether it is the publicly available GT6 or the still in development and internal GT6.

    2. RACECAR

“The car will become available in the next update for the game”

Since there is no GT6 for PS4, surely you can deduce what that means.

    3. JKcreativeworks

“The car will become available in the next update for the game, which will also introduce new tuning parts and options for the base model of M4 Coupé. Additional customization options will include painted kidney grills, larger wheel sizes, hood pins, and additional aero parts.”

  5. DUD Rage

If this is all we get in the next update, im going to be extremely disappointed. Its been 2 months & all we get is some tuning parts & a car with some extra lights. -_-

  6. Amac500

This is cool. The pace car will be a nice touch, though without cautions or a pace car leading on rolling starts or cautions it won’t gave too much practical use. I know some people use pace cars for races, but it has to be user operated and it takes up a grid spot and its a bit inconvenient for everyone. Still I like it, even if it I’d a novelty. Note body kit options are great too, and I’d like to see a wide range for all premiums.

Still, I’m slightly tired of new cars in the game just being the same new cars getting rehashed. That’s to say all the FT1 and M4 stuff. I’m still a fan of the VGT program, but I still wanna see new real world cars and race cars. For example, that Alfa Romeo 4C has GT6 written all over it… Or even if they’re just new to being premium, they’re new to me.

  7. yewles1

…so according to the original blog post, we’re getting both the Safety Car and stock versions of the “BMW M4 M Performance Edition” in the update, and both the regular M4 Coupé and Performance Edition (not including Safety Car, of course) will be fully upgradeable; am I reading that right?

    1. TheJess656

No, it says that the safety car is based on the M4 M performance edition. It doesn’t say that the M Performance Edition is being added.

    2. 05XR8

The GT6 website says the Pace Car is based on the 2015 M4 M4 Coupe. The parts will be available to use. We’re only getting one car and the M Performance Parts.

The BMW M4 M Performance Safety Car was produced by BMW of North America as an exciting showcase for the latest accessories in the popular M Performance Parts catalogue, which are often used by BMW owners to fully personalise The Ultimate Driving Machine®. The Safety Car began as a series-production, 2015 BMW M4 Coupé, and features a custom body wrap by 3M in BMW Motorsport theme colours. Next, BMW added a full complement of BMW M Performance parts available for the M4: carbon fibre splitter system, side splitters, carbon fibre mirror caps, carbon fibre rear spoiler, carbon fibre rear diffuser, black BMW kidney grilles, black side gills, and titanium exhaust system with carbon fibre exhaust tips. The M4 Safety Car theme is finished by a set of LED grille-mounted flashers and LED rooftop light bar.

  8. Psychopulse

Did it really have to take them that long to have customization options available for the M4? On a side note, the livery looks awesome on the safety car, just like the BMW Vision GT!

    1. Tenacious D

I’m beginning to accept the incessant complaining as a way of life for certain “fans” of the series. Plus the fact that the game is still viable and being played by a bunch of us. If it was dead, no one would be here but a few hardcore true believes. ;-)

  9. 05XR8

Who cares about lights? Didn’t we get 2 Skyline pace cars? One had lights and one was just graphics. We can finally have production Series racing !!!

    1. 05XR8

Of course it should. What if if we get the 2-series Pace car with lights? Or M5 pace car with lights? Who knows why this one doesn’t have a light bar. Maybe it has strobes. I’m happy we can tune the M4. It should have been from day one.

    2. 05XR8

I saw a pic for the one with the light bar. The GT6 website mentions strobes and light bar as well. I’m prteparing to build my Bridgestone Production Car replica.

  10. Sebas

In my humble opinion GT is so outdated unlike other racing simulators, talking about cars. We need newer such as the new GTI MK7, the Alfa 4C, Lambo Huracan, Ferrari F12 and many others as DLC.

    1. Tenacious D

And those “other racers” have those cars? Gee, maybe most racers are dead n buried too…

Look, I’d like a few new cars too, but if you can’t enjoy the crazy number of cars already in GT6, I doubt that a few new rides is going to change your opinion. This all reminds me of TokoTurismo, who insisted that Zahara had to be released or GT6 was worthless to him. Well, it was, and… yep, still worthless to him.

    2. Johnnypenso

Can’t the guy just state his opinion (and a humble one at that) without you jumping down his throat about what he wants for the GT series? And you have to troll Toko at the same time? You’re becoming just like those that you so often decry. Even at that you still got it wrong. Toko has insisted on the Course Maker, not Zahara, do try to get at least some of your facts straight.

  11. SavageEvil

Wait a minute, I have no idea who is in control of what gets added but this is kind of pointless to add in a livery version of a car already in the game when they can just apply the livery and tune the motor(assuming it’s not stock)…why waste the space and increase DL size by including that, then again I believe that PD simply has hex codes which change the appearance and performance values of body swap cars. So unlike the usual multiple models stored on the HDD, it’s just a bunch of values which apply livery, and upgrades to the car which should come directly from everything in the game. Always a headscratcher when PD will have two cars one stock and another modded but in the game you cannot mod out the stock car to match the modded one, we need tuner village with after market stuff for virtually every car, manufacturer suggested stuff is fine but a bit limiting. Community Mod anyone?!?

    1. Tenacious D

We definitely do need that stuff. There will likely be a Spec 2 update, which might have some of these goodies in them, if not more. We’ll just have to see what happens in the first year. Just four weeks plus to go to the anniversary…

  12. erik1127

I appreciate the free cars and extras, having said that I
Wish there would be some paid dlc coming with new over the road cars. I would gladly pay for some and tracks. We are getting content that is already there and is easy to recycle.

    1. vr6cas

You know what it is, they are saving all the new cars they have for GT7, I bet they have anywhere from fifty to a hundred and fifty cars the they could have released but they want to hold back so something new can be introduced on GT7.

    2. Tenacious D

This is my thinking as well. Being on a shiny new powerbox won’t be quite enough for GT7 to shine. It needs new content as well, but we may well see some trickledown into GT6 from their GT7 work.

  13. FerrariFXX 07

Well the M4 will make a change to the R34 Skyline in online cops and robber rooms.
Brilliant car though. Looking forward to it.

  14. BOSS_335

They must be getting ready for the FIA championship. Maybe we’ll be getting rolling stars & safety car periods! Then again, they’re probably just padding the car count, lol.

  15. Swagger897

I also can’t wait to see when someone quotes this car that,

“All cars with the Gran Turismo banner on the windshield will come to GT6…”
Face it, someone will say it..

    1. RACECAR

If you’ve been around the car wishlists (when those were a thing), its already happened more the nonce (usually involving Porsches).

    2. Amac500

A couple months ago I encountered someone who said all D1 drift cars should absolutely be in the game, no questions asked, only because GT has a decal on some of the cars. Lmao, “those people”.

  16. hankolerd

Does the current version of Laguna Seca really have that much vegetation going up Rahal straight? If so I haven’t noticed it in recent races.

  17. ironman44321

Cool, I wonder if it will have different performance specs than the regular M4. Though I’m honestly more excited for the new customization options, maybe it won’t just be the M4 that gets them?

    1. Normalaatsra

Generally all safety cars need a performance boost to catch up with, say, open-wheeler racing cars. The R34 Pace Car is boosted to 541HP.

  18. chengman

Please tell me they are also fixing the engine sound. I understand that the car was released on GT6 before anyone even saw it IRL, but I’m pretty sure they’ve had more than 9 months to put the proper M4 noise in. The 135i sound is just *shudders*

    1. hankolerd

Based on what Kaz has said about sounds, I wouldn’t expect much until that update is ready, and likely not anything significant until GT7.

  19. hankolerd

Wow, this is awesome. I was just wondering last night why there were no real tuning options for the M4, it seemed like the perfect car for PD to launch more customization options. I am excited to see what all the update brings. Based on the ride height in those screenshots it is finally bringing the ability to change the suspension as well on the M4.

  20. vr6cas

Why do PD announce something and then we have to wait a month for it? It’s like they try to do what real life car manufacturers do, and tease for a couple of weeks to a big reveal. The New tuning options for the M4 are welcomed.

    1. Amac500

Maybe it will be a body kit option, or maybe the headlights will. I can’t imagine it won’t flash the head and tail lights if you do it manually. But I can’t imagine it won’t be able to flash at all, I mean if a standard car can do it, lol

  21. RACECAR

I don’t care what anyone says. All I see is us finally getting a premium, recent Pace car for league racing (something some of us have wanted for a while).

    1. Famine

“The car will become available in the next update for the game, which will also introduce new tuning parts and options for the base model of M4 Coupé.”

      So… yeah.

    2. R34EVO9

I didnt read this on gtp first I read off the sema gt6 page and they didn’t word like it was for the regular m4 but for the pace car
. Hence why I said disregard my comment after I read gtp article

    3. Mellow70

      @Famine & @HisSuppleness

I was about to say the same thing as johanhummer9 when I seen just the pace car pictured until I seen the regular M4 Coupe pictured with some rims and I was like “Wait…, hold up! Let me read and see if my eyes isn’t playing tricks on me and this is actually legit!” I seen that 2nd sentence in the first paragraph and I was like “YES!!! Thank God!”

    1. Swagger897

Yeah, honestly…. They just need a livery system for GT6.. Modelling cars for the sake of count needs to come to an end.

But, I think we will see more than just one car added this month.

    2. GTHEAD87

I’m with Swagger there. If they worked on a livery system then we could make the race/pace cars if we wanted. Fair enough we won’t have 1000+ cars but we can make any livery we want. It would save disc space and give us more options.
