Build Your Own Colorful Controller with the Xbox Design Lab

Microsoft had a strong showing at E3 earlier this week, confirming the long-rumored Xbox One S and Project Scorpio. With a slew of games compatible with both the Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms through ‘Xbox Play Anywhere’ launching over the coming months, there is an unprecedented level of choice being made available to users.

In keeping with that theme, Microsoft is launching a new program by the name of Xbox Design Lab, allowing those who are interested an opportunity to design and customize a controller to their liking.

This is a good thing for a couple of reasons, the biggest of those being you’ll no longer be required to do so through third-party means; first purchasing the controller and then compounding an additional fee for the customization itself.

If you’re like me, you’ll waste time just by creating and saving designs. I call this one ‘Chilled Cranberry’, because I’m an artist.

You’ll be able to customize just about every part of the controller, from the front and rear shell casing, down to the color of the thumbsticks. According to Microsoft, there are over 8 million possible color combinations.

In addition to customizing the color of the controller, you’ll be able to laser engrave a custom message onto the lower half, and this can either be your Gamertag or a custom message, both up to 16 characters in length.

While the controllers won’t ship until September rolls around, you can drop by the Xbox Design Lab page and get started on creating (and saving) designs that’ll make your controller unique. Prices begin at $79.99, with an additional $9.99 for laser engraving.

Sorry, replied to the wrong post. But since I’m here, why bother concerning yourself with the tastes of others? As if your tastes are superior? Someone likely thinks your house, your car, the women you’ve dated, and your wardrobe are hideous. But why should you care if they made you happy?

Plus, your eyes will be safe from their controllers “hideousness” since they will be in the hands and at their homes of the people who create them.

They show the controllers from all different angles, except one – the headphone connection. Will these need an adaptor (in which case you’d better have black as your custom color), or will they come with the standard “non-Xbox only” headphone plug?

I guess I have to use my US Mailbox for that to ship here, sadly that means I would also have to pay an extra $11 or so.

I really don’t like the shape of the new controllers. Think I’ll just be keeping my old ones, thanks.
