One of the finest open-world racing games from last generation could be coming back to the current wave of consoles. If recent reports are correct, Criterion Games’ critically acclaimed Burnout Paradise could be making its way to a console near you.
Rumors started almost a month ago when a Brazilian inventory listing revealed the title for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The initial shock of this news passed, with many chalking it up as nothing to get excited about. That was the case, until reliable outlet Gematsu picked up on the news this week.
The latest point of interest comes from a Japanese retailer listing the remaster for the PlayStation 4 platform. Even more intriguing, release could be mere months away, as the retailer is citing a March 16 release date. Is it time to take ourselves down to Paradise City?
Burnout Paradise is a bit of a cult favorite in the racing genre. Building on the series’ trademark destructive gameplay, it expanded the core mechanics past linear racing. Throw in a large number of varied fictional vehicles and there was a lot to sink your teeth into. One of the most impressive innovations was the introduction of the Easy Drive system. This allowed players to seamlessly join online matches and invite friends. Compared to previous entries, Paradise was a huge gamble but in the eyes of many, it certainly paid off.
The game was also supported heavily post-launch with an extensive DLC plan that included a new stunt section for the map and even toy cars to drive. Paradise City proved to be one of the best-realized open-worlds in gaming; its return would be cause for celebration. Criterion Games just hasn’t been the same since the game’s release — the remaster could ignite a whole new generation of Burnout fans.
Take this news with a pinch of salt for now, however. Until EA makes any form of announcement, Burnout Paradise still remains a classic left in the previous generation. We can’t say the possibility of returning to the game isn’t exciting though, so we’ll be looking out for all the latest news updates.
Eager Xbox One players who can’t wait to play the remaster can currently enjoy the original game via backwards compatibility.
