The latest trailer for Gran Turismo Sport that dropped prior to Sony’s E3 conference on Tuesday featured sprawling birds-eye views of some of the game’s newest locales, like Lake Maggiore. Though, if you were focused on the action down on the track, you may have missed a subtle hint at something in the sky.
Flying amongst the helicopters in one particular scene was a drone. You can see it hovering at the 2:10 point in the trailer, taking in a rally race between a Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. And although it might not seem like much, a “drone mode” for spectators, as seen in Forza Horizon 3, has been one of fans’ most requested features on our forums.
The possibility of a drone mode becomes a little more believable when you consider GoPro has long been one of GT Sport’s major partners. The company’s logo appears as a sponsor on cars and trackside banners throughout the game, and would be a good fit for a franchise dedicated to spectating and photography almost as much as it is to racing.
Besides, GoPro already produces a drone, called the Karma. While the drone seen in the image above doesn’t quite resemble the Karma’s more compact design, it does present a branding opportunity. Or, of course, we’re making too much of this, and Polyphony just felt like putting a drone in the sky. Anything is possible.
Either way, this could be a chance for GT Sport to branch outside of Scapes and deliver a photo mode more similar to those in previous games in the franchise. Players would have the freedom to shoot or watch the race from any vantage point they please. With GT Sport’s lush environments and impressive visuals, it’s an idea that makes too much sense to pass up.
