It’s no secret that Thrustmaster very much has a stronghold on the Playstation side of the sim racing market. Despite a few offerings elsewhere, the company has done well with its Sony-compatible products that include entry level wheels like the T150 series and high end products like the upcoming GT Sport wheel.
However, Fanatec may be joining the party soon enough, as it has given wheel enthusiasts a glance at a new piece of hardware in the making — with one detail PlayStation aficionados may recognize.
We can see a selection of buttons on some form of blue casing, almost identical to the blue color used in a lot of the PlayStation 4’s marketing. However, the biggest tell comes from the bottom-right of the teaser, where we clearly see the top of PlayStation’s iconic logo.
What we are actually getting a glimpse of here is certainly up to interpretation. On the official forum, initial speculation pointed to a button-box which has since been debunked as being incorrect. Now speculation has moved on to consider the possibility of a wheel-base or universal hub that would add compatibility for the PlayStation 4 platform.
Smartly, Fanatec’s teasing is ambiguous enough to keep us guessing and intrigued for future updates. CEO Thomas Jackermeier really has us stumped with the comment that this is a product that has never been done before, not even on PC.
With the Gran Turismo series making its debut on the PS4 some time this year, the announcement of Fanatec support would certainly go down well with the hardcore players in the fanbase. The hardware veteran is known for the build quality of its racing sim products and it would certainly open up more options for those wishing to take their experience a bit further.
We’ll be keeping an eye out on developments from the Fanatec camp in the coming weeks and months.
