Things have gone a little quiet for Fast and Furious Crossroads since last year’s surprise announcement. However, it’s all come back with a bit of a bang, and a new launch date, with today’s gameplay trailer.
Crossroads is touted as a team-based action game, set in the rather chaotic Fast and Furious universe. If, somehow, you’re not familiar with the film series which is now some 19 years old, this means plenty of high-value, high-power cars, insane driving stunts, explosions, and daring heists.
While the original films were car-themed, more recent entries have focused on spectacular set pieces, with cars involved somewhere along the line. The Fast crew has variously engaged in the theft of an entire safe from inside a police station, and tried to stop a nuclear submarine with a Lamborghini Aventador.
It’s fair to say that the Crossroads gameplay trailer sticks to this most recent ethos. During the clip we see a three-man (or rather three-woman) team chasing down an armed and armored hovercraft, a Plymouth GTX with wheel scythes trying to take down a high-speed tank, and the team chasing an actual space rocket down a runway.
Like the films, Crossroads promises to head to locations around the world, including events set in Greece, Morocco, and Spain. The trailer also reconfirms that Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson will play their film roles of Dom and Letty Toretto, and Roman Pearce. New cast members include Sonequa Martin-Green and Asia Kate Dillon.
Along with some of the action, the trailer also reveals an unknown villain. “Kai” appears twice in the clips as someone the team need to chase and stop, although we don’t know if this is the main antagonist or a mere hench-person. Much of the story is still under wraps too, so quite how the rocket, hovercraft, tank, and “ECLPS” device tie together is a mystery for now.
Car fans should be well catered for too, with vehicles like the aforementioned Plymouth GTX, classic Trans Am and Mustang models, and a very modern Ford GT all making appearances. We also spotted the bad guys driving a Jaguar F-Type, along with Dom’s Fast 6 Dodge Challenger, and a Skyline GT-R.
Fast & Furious Crossroads, from Project CARS developer Slightly Mad Studios, will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 7.
