Hi all,

I present you a recreation of the old Autodromo Nelson Piquet, aka Jacarepagua F1 track in Rio, used in Formula One first in 1978 and then from 1981 to 1989.

It's a perfect complement to the Lotus97T, for which I always thought we were missing classic F1 tracks on which she raced.

It has been recreated using Google maps (obviously) for the parts that are still standing today (some barely visible), and several onboard laps and old GP videos for the parts that have been changed or completely erased.

In the process, I managed to get the length almost exactly like the real one, missing out by just a couple of meters : although in the TPE it's exactly 5.031 km as in real life, once imported in GT6 it lost a little less than 2 meters. Good enough :cool:

It's clearly an F1 track so best suited for the fastest cars. Obviously the Lotus97T from 1985 feels completely at home there, but other cars like the LMPs might also be fun to drive (haven't tried them yet).

I only had to make one little compromise while building the track. Since I'm using the official TPE 1.0.2, not the nocheck version, the two straights ended up being too close to one another. So I had two options :
  • change the shape of the track so that they would fit alongside one another
  • decrease the width of the long back straight to put it closer to the pit straight
I chosed the later because I thought keeping the road surface as close to the real thing as possible was more important, but sadely it means no trackside objects along the longest straight, so no grandstands where there should have been 3 on the north side (right hand side while driving).

Regarding lap times, in the Lotus they are faster than in real life (pole was 1m27 in 1985) but that's understandable since the GT6 track probably got more grip, is an awful lot less bumpy than the real surface, and we drive in perfect conditions. Also, no death.

One word about the curbs : they are in the right positions as seen in the various onboards I watched, although the shape is off, they are taller in real life. The ones from Andalusia would have been perfect but there's nothing one can do to get them in Eifel flat. Anyway, don't be surprised to see them start very late at the apex of the turns, it was like this on the real track!
