GT4 Drifting Physics

i've done a search on this topic and have found nothing on it so...

anyway, i think i figured out how to finally drift in GT4... in GT3, drifting was considerably easier. all you have to do in GT3 when making (for example, a right turn) is press right and then press left to counterstear while applying the gas as needed. But at the end of the turn all you have to do is let go of the left button to cancel the counterstear and then the car will go back to going straight automatically. In GT4, you do all this, except that this time, at the end of the turn, the game won't automatically point the wheels straight for you. The difference is you have to bring the wheels back to neutral MANUALLY (ie. after counter-stearing) holding down the left button. at the end of the drift, you have to press the right button immediately or else the tail will come out and you will spin out (ie. kinda like a faint drift).

if anybody else has figured out drifting, do you have any other tips?

i found it easier to drift with N3 tires in the front and N2 tires in the back, thus creating those long and showy drifts that people love.

nice dude! i could never drift properly in Gt3(just ended up screwing up my cars setting) and prolly wont in gt4 ether. cant wait to get it!

I tried some of the old settings I've used in GT3 and it somehow didn't work that well but overall it worked pretty good after a lil adjustments here and there.

Add some ASM to oversteer. Like 6 or 8..

^^^ don't hurt their brains too much :P.

For those wanting to drift, I suggest downloding the BMI Drift Bible, or just watching Keiichi Tsuchiya videos in general, he is extremely good.

Just keep practicing, but don't just "slide into it". There has to be rhythm and method to your madness.

I'm just wondering, there is no automatic wheel centering during driving right? Now, does the wheel will stay put, for example, to the right when you turn your analog to the right when the car at a full stop? Just curious.

I'd just like to point out that in real life your wheels do recenter when you're done with the drift.

sorry, didn't clarify this, yes, the game does center the wheels again however, like in real life, when you are countersteering, and want to exit the corner correctly you do not simply let go of the wheel and let it correct itself, you need to bring the wheel back manually, like i described above......I have the drift bible, and you can see Keichi Tsuchiya do this, he doesn't simply let go of thw wheel, if you do that, you're going to spin out.......

people apply this technique to the faint drift....when countersteering, you hold the countersteer, and let the wheels catch, then you take the momentum from this and swing the back around the other way, and countersteer in the other direction

i know what you mean, but i was used to drifting in gT3, and in gt3, you can just slid into it and then just correct the slide......can't do that in GT4

Yep, the physics in GT4 are better.

I have seen a few post where people said they have gotten used to drifting in GT4 now, but no one has produced a vid, us non GT4'ers need a vid.

I just don't see how it would be possible with 900 degree mode enabled, and that's a shame. Maybe with the Driving Force Pro 2 we'll be able to drift realisticly.

I sure hope so, but I'm almost 100% confident it will be realistic, even more with the DFP2.

DFP2...huh?

Anyway, I just think people *think* they are getting good at drifting. Most videos I have seen of even GT3, people can't seem to properly drift. But I suppose some unknown GT'er needs to prove me wrong...

OH YEAH...^^^Them's fightin' werds!

You've lost me there. Why would you add ASM (which prevents oversteer) to oversteer?

Videos would be very very good. I always drifted in GT3, I can't wait to drift in GT4 to see the difference.

JimX, i know what you mean, most of those videos you see online, they cut it and you can't see that theyt probably mess up exiting the turn, also, they rarely show someone doing a whole track.....i used to drift whole tracks.......I haven't mastered drifting in GT4, I've only had the game for a week.....but it is getting easier, when i first started, it seemed like the car (any car) was really twitchy but that's cause i didnt' know how to control it, but as i'm getting better, the car's movements seem slower and i can control them easier....

as for vids, i have never posted or recorded a video before, if someo0ne can tell me how, i can try to......i've already busted some pretty cool drifts on Costa Di Amalfi and saved the replay....but, because i am still learning, some drifts suck

Im gonna have fun with GT4 when it is out and trying to drift with DFP in 900 degree, actually i cant wait, it may take months or years but i shall learn how to :P.

I'm looking forward to seeing some vids, I saw a video of Sven "drifting" the Falken Skyline in the Japanese demo WITH TCS. I realise it was all engine brake type drifting but none the less, he can control the car. So... I'm looking forward to him learning to drift and posting a video. I should be good. I am genereally not impressed with any other videos I have seen of people attempting a drift in prologue or the Japanese demo, his is the only one with real promise.

ANYWAY...sheesh that was long.

1. Do you have a digital video camera, or any video camera that can transport data to your PC?

2. Do you have a capture card on your PC?
(something like this http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-144-301&depa=1)

3. Do you have a firewire port?

ok, i need help, wut are your settings for drifting in gt4? wtf.. the physics are completely different from gt3, i would say they are worse! a big disappointment. I spent all night tweaking the settings and nothing... all the car does is gets out of control, no where near a drift. I've tried awd, fr all completely modded. Different techniques also. The ebrake is hella weak, and u can't do a brake drift even turning the front brake balance at 18 and rear 8. Sorry for such a negative rant but i'm extremely fustrated...

btw... how come i can't even get a 600+hp car to powerover........... -_-'... all the cars understeers, or maybe it's just me...........

yeah! That's the one.
Too bad he only pops in like once every few months. I'd love to see him tackle gt4 once it comes out. At least he knows what a real drift is. A lot of the people you see talking about drifting are only yanking on the e-brake in a freaking civic. "ummmm yeah buddy....sure whatever you say...you were drifting......ummmmm"

will someone shoot me now?

its not difficult to make the car START the drift, its difficult ENDING the drift. all you have to do is make sure you have N1 "economical" tires (the equivalent of rental car tires :scared: ). many techniques work just make your to "catch it" before snap oversteer ends it for you.
I LOVE driving the M5, M3, Supra RZ, R34, NSX, and more, they are all easy to drift with. Try the ring.....

well i haven't tried N1 tires yet but i just don't understand why it's so much harder in gt4. When u initiate the slide it doesn't even looks smooth, like the car shudders. And i can't seem to get the car to oversteer by braking hard b4 the turn, it understeers like crazy (I'm driving a 350z z-tune). Also, the camber angle is really strange in this version, i had to set it up to like 9+ b4 the car starts to react somewhat like i wanted it to, but still not even close. I appreciate some of u guys helping me, cuz drifting is gt is a big deal for me lol, a big part of the fun :)

Are you shifting the cars body weight (feint)?

There is a awesome GT4 drift vid getting around, I wonder how he set his car up?
