Anyone notice how much power you lose through the drivetrain in a 4WD vehicle in this game ?

A perfect example of this is the Storia CX, which is available in both FF and 4WD ... Comparing them side-by-side (4WD with Stage 2 Weight Reduction to make weight even) ...

2WD - 1/4 mile - 20.901
4WD - 1/4 mile - 22.187

2WD - 1000m - 38.853
4WD - 1000m - 40.927

Even comparing the 2WD Storia CX to the lighter 4WD Daihatsus with the 659 cc engine, which has much more power, the 2WD Storia CX is still faster ...

2WD - 1/4 mile - 20.901
4WD - 1/4 mile - 22.187
Mira TR - 1/4 mile - 21.915

2WD - 1000m - 38.853
4WD - 1000m - 40.927
Mira TR - 1000m - 40.135

That's not a small difference, either ... I was actually shocked ...

Mind you, when you get higher up in power, the extra traction will actually help ... but, you still lose quite a bit of power through the drivetrain nonetheless ...
 
Well, hey, this is a good thing...realistic that a low-powered kei car will lose acceleration when it has to push those extra gears and axles. In a kei car, the wheelspin factor is also not present like it is in higher-powered cars like you said (hence, with more power, 4WD becomes a better launch from first gear because wheelspin is diminished when compared to a rear or front-wheel drive car).

I'm actually shocked that someone other than me is actually testing kei cars!

storia cx 4wd data:
4.642 stock final drive, 7500 max rpm, 22" tire, 57 hp, 1862 lbs
drag time using auto 1 on 4.500, auto trans: 22.117, 40.788

storia cx 2wd data:
4.500 stock final drive, 7500 max rpm, 22" tire, 57hp, 1851 lbs
drag time using auto 1 on 4.500, auto trans: 20.733, 38.680
upgrade to 116hp:
drag time using auto 1 on 4.500, auto trans: 16.774, 31.009

storia x4
5.545 stock final drive, 8000 max rpm, 22" tire, 116hp, 1851 lbs
full suspension, set to match stock storia cx
drag time using auto 1 on 4.500, auto trans: 17.820, 32.719

both storia cx have the same power figure, max power on mid rpm.
storia x4 have max power on high rpm.

I love GT2 more :) .........

All car have exact same power figure (so I think it have the same engine), except mazda that have slightly different. We can find out if FR or FF or RR can have better time than 4WD.

ok, I done with 400m and 1000m testing:

Move SRXX 2WD: 20.598, 38.503
Move SRXX 4WD: 21.733, 40.243
both have the same power, gear, suspension and downforce, the 2WD is 40kg heavier (760kg, weird) using 2nd weight mods it become 722kg.

Opti Club Sport 2WD: 22.459, 41.197
Opti Club Sport 4WD: 23.320, 42.691
both have the same power and downforce, 2WD have 4.722 final drive, 160 ride height, 4wd have 5.909 final drive, 155 ride height. 4wd is 50kg heavier (710kg) using 3rd weight mods it become 653kg. Test done using auto 1 on 4.500.

Skyline GTSt Type M FR : 14.630, 26.945
Skyline GTS4 R32 ' 4WD : 15.238, 27.923
both have the same power and downforce, 2WD have 4.363 final drive, 145 ride height, 4wd have 4.375 final drive, 150 ride height. 4wd is 120kg heavier (1420kg) using 3rd weight mods it become 1263kg. Test done using auto 12 on 4.500 and super soft tire.

Pleo RS '98 FF_ : 22.206, 40.796
Pleo RM '98 4WD : 24.825, 43.318
both have the same power, suspension, gear and downforce. 4wd is 60kg heavier (920kg) using 3rd weight mods it become 846kg.

Mazda 323F Coupe_ FF_ : 16.264, 29.761
Mazda 323F SWagon 4WD : 17.038, 31.044
both have the same downforce, 2WD have 4.388 final drive, 150 ride height, 4wd have 4.214 final drive, 155 ride height. 4wd is 70kg heavier (1310kg) using 1st weight mods it become 1244kg. 4WD have 4hp lower, port grinding make it even. Test done using full suspension and auto 10 on 4.500.

I am not posting RUF time because I made mistake on comparing, it seems no car in RUF have the same engine for RR and 4WD.
 
Hmm weird. In life 4wd cars are generally slower due to the weight. But there are many factors that effect the speed and acceleration.

I don't know how exactly to describe this but when you have a rear drive car and you have ballast on the rear wheels the tyres are able to grip more because weight is being pushed on them. Bad explaination.

Now when you build a 4 wheel drive car you have to set power to both front and rear. Some cars have 65 rear and 35 front. So the 65% of power going to the rear as well as having the weight shift to the rear helps the acceleration, but driving say offroad the front wheels come into a more important role.

I'm sorry I can't explain this really well though folks. When I build my ford focus I want either power to be

35 F/65 R.

Computer controller traction control system on all 4 wheels that detect slippage and lack of grip. For example I am driving a rally and I go into a turn, I turn and the front of the car needs more power to pull me through the turn, kind of like the car hugging the turn. After the turn is completed I want to be back on the gas so I would need more power to the rear pushing the car forwards, plus with the weight being shifted to the back of the car it's more of a bonus to have more power transfered.

Again sorry for the poor explaination.
 
Liam2maps, i think your explainations were good enough, at least to me. :)

I had already noticed this loss of power but in a different way...
I noticed this in GT1 when comparing Supra VS Skyline top speed, and then on GT2 again.

The two dragsters in the game, one is 4WD the other is FR, they have about same power/weight ratio and i get better top speed with the FR (180SX). Same for Supras VS Skylines.
I didn't made any accurate tests, it's just from my experience driving them. I leave the tests to you guys :P
 
Yeah your explanation makes sense, Liam. I think in real life, there are other worries (like throwing a rod or blowing up your engine) that aren't present in the game, therefore we can rev as much as we want to..the only things limiting launch-speed are wheelspin and redlining past the speed limiter.

I just saw a GT race at Laguna Seca on ESPN last week or 2 weeks ago. I think the pole position was held by either an Audi or a BMW. Then again, was it an Acura? I totally forget. anyways, it was clear from the start that the Audi got the best launch. A BMW led the race for awhile. It also got a good start since it was near the starting line, which is a slight uphill of course, therefore more weight was sitting on the back wheels from the start.

Are you aware that stock skyline are not true 4WD? it become 4WD only when it loose traction? Although I read it on Australian online car magazine (sorry, forget the name), some journalist can make that car almost full 4WD by attaching self made electronic devices to the R32 lateral G meter.
I think 4WD power loss can also generated from transmission, because the cheapest way to make 4WD is by viscious. When front and rear connected by liquid the power loss should be noticable.

Your description is good enough for me too Liam, the computer controlled traction is like what Skyline GTR and Porsche 911 GT3 have?

I test the RUF, the 4WD version is faster, but I think it's from different engine performance.

Guys I am glad you could understand my poor explaination. Sorry I hardly post and all.

I'll tell you something about me that you probably won't know but I only like 3-4 Japanese cars.

Nissan 300ZX (Z31) '88 (Turbo of course)
Honda NSX Type R (To expensive to actually buy but it's a true Japanese sports car. Shame it's way overpriced)
Celica GT-Four (Great car for fun and weekend events)

The rest aren't Japanese makes, I'll name them at a later date but what cars do you guys like?
