Just wondering, when you have a headset that works for online does it show up when you change the voice output of the game? Cause for me even with the headset plugged in they only have "none" or "speakers" which is the tv. I'm wondering if "headset" pops up if the game recognizes one?

I'm upto tier 17 in the World tour now (I know, I go through games slowly).

ime only at tier two, but making much headway in the off-road events in procareer, still on the learning curve there but only the classics are receiving neglect.
 
People, I'm currently renting "TOCA Race Driver 3." It's time for me to offer my opinions after a few runs with this game. I'm going to bring up a bunch of miscellaneous stuff about the game.

The first thing I will say is that what GT is to cars, TOCA RD 3 is to races. The selection of different courses is amazing. There are a multitude of racing series as long as it has four wheels and an engine. I think the Gran Turismo series is more concerned with different types of racing for different types of cars. TOCA RD 3 is more like different types of racing for different types of disciplines. I've loved the GT formula because I want a balance of "just racing" and then pro-style racing. Don't want to be involved with just race cars all the time. I think if you have ToCA RD 2 data on your Memory Card, you might get some extra stuff based on how well you progressed in TOCA RD 2. As a small note in Pro Mode, click on "Cancel" if you're going to skip or retire from a race. Otherwise, you're not going to be able to skip at will.

In my first Pro Mode race, I did the GT Disciplines, starting with those wonderful Global GT Lights. I don't know what it is about Global GT Lights that I like so much. The best thing I like is probably that they are easy and fun to race around a track. The Mid/RWD prototypes look more like mini LMPs. They are still the first step among many when you finally race (not in this game) a pure prototype like an Audi R8 or a Panoz LMP Roadster. Trouble is, never had I had to restart races so much. I didn't restart in races so much when I was racing in TOCA Race Driver 2. It's even worse with flags. The flags are no complaint, but after restarting and restarting trying to get the best results, it took me seven checkered flags to finally win my first Pro-level race as I won the Gateway International Road Course.

Here are some of my gripes:
* Many of you talked about getting 5-second penalties when the AI driver hit you. Well, they hit me, and I get the penalty. That's why I wasn't so tolerant of when people talk about getting 5-Second Penalties in GT4 when the AI Driver hits the human driver as the human driver gets the penalty. Dudes run into ME and its ME who gets the penalty? Player, please! SOMETIMES, the racers tag me and THEY get fouls (not to use sports terms).

* In addition, the flags get horrible. After some dude was on the inside trying to pass me, he tags MY rear, I get the penalty, I smacked his ass later on, then I get disqualified. I'm like "his ass deserved it for what he did to me." Sometimes, I got a little Kurt Busch or Tony Stewart in me. ^_^

* Oval racing is still the Acheilles' Heel of the series, despite the fact it's featured in the game. Simply put, ovals are more freustrating than traditional road course racing.

* I completely lack consistency in this game! When I'm leading or in a Podium position, some s:censored: always happens. Either it's... (1) I'm leading, then I spin and never win the race, (2) someone whacks me a la "Pro Race Driver" and screws me out of a race win, or (3) I lose track of what direction I'm supposed to be going, and end up hitting a wall I shouldn't even hit. I never struggled this much in GT games, let alone ToCA RD 2.


It's only a rental, but if I had this game to own, here's where I'd love to race in the game:
CLASSICS: 1960's Grand Prix
GT: (tie) Palmer Jaguar JP1 and British GT
OVAL: Indy Car Series*
TOURING CAR: Australian V8 Supercars
OFF-ROAD: (not sure) maybe Group N Rally...
OPEN-WHEEL: Formula 3
Honda: ???

* = recently reached or surpassed as of the date of this typing


So after this very long post of my ToCA experience, here is my mini-review:

PROS: I dare you to find a race you don't want to be involved in, becuase there are many races for many tastes; excellently-designed cars and courses; great number of real-world racing tracks; plenty of challenges; many cars with wonderful sounds; a number of enticing cars to race from a number of eras and disciplines

CONS: flag system is completely flawed, especially the penalty flags; AI is starting to be like "Pro Race Driver," only much more sane. They'd better fix this come ToCA RD 4, especially when in traffic;

NEUTRAL/INDIFFERENT: some American oval racing fans would be rather harmed to see something like international names in American "stock" car and truck racing. For example, one of the racers in the Speed Truck Challenge is named Katsuo Hane. Also don't forget about having the Reckless Driving deal and European-style replay racing footage. Some would probably not like that. After all, this is a British game attempting to capture American NASCAR-style truck action, you know;

FINAL VERDICT: This is a great racing game. When you're out racing, there's nothing like it. But the same thing people complain about the GT series is true in this game as well. The AI as well as the ticky-tacky Black Flag system need SERIOUS work (even though the Black Flags can be toggled). Those two issues are the reason for a lower score than it probably deserves. I wanted to give it 8.25, but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. (Final Verdict: 8.50/10.00)
 
Hmm for the GT-Tuning cup what car would you guys recommend? The Gemballa GTR-750, Koenigg GT or the Koenigg GT-D?!

Holy crap, set the AI at 90% on the GT-Tuning cup then go to bathurst! They're so aggressive I've never seen them like that at just 90%!
 
The flagg issue takes into account your braking and everythign for the past three seconds, so it most likely thinks you were brake checking the persone behind you. (Talking to John)
 
Yeah it's probably what FireEmblem said, try not braking as hard, doesn't happen to me, but it's easier to measure your braking and acceleration with pedals.

It's clear that the penalty system is one of the more hotly-debated topics on the forum, and while we're working on improvements, both for corner cutting and dangerous driving, I thought it would be good to share with the community the rules the game applies when it decides whether or not to lay down the Law.

In the event of a collision each driver is given an impact rating, this is generated from the following variables:

Open Wheel or not, open wheelers are more sensitive and will penalise rear shunts more for example.

Impacts size in proportion to the mass of the vehicle is considered, small impacts are ignored.

Going the wrong way, if either car is going the wrong way when the other isn't then it blames them.

Percentage of time braking in the 3 seconds prior to impact, the more you're braking the more you're considered to be trying to avoid the impact and thus you're penalised less.

Deviation from ideal speed, if you're travelling way faster than is expected at that point on the track then you're considered more likely to be driving dangerously, amount of braking is factored into this as a mitigating factor.

Amount of swerve compared to the degree of swerve of the racing line, if the racing line is dead straight and your swerving across the track it considers this more dangerous and likewise if the racing line goes round a corner and you're ignoring the turn then that adds to the rating too.

Is either car considered behind the other? Based on where the cars are on the track it tries to work out which (if any) are behind, the rear car is more heavily penalised.

If the difference between the ratings is big enough and the absolute rating is big enough then penalise the highest rated driver.

These were balanced so that shunting someone from the rear should get you a flag, but if they're swerving around (or across) the track or otherwise driving erratically then it becomes a more difficult decision. At some level of erratic behaviour the blame switches over to the car in front.

I loathe the open-wheelers. They are so fragile. The Formula 1000s are great fun. True to any ToCA I've played for the PS2, I do get a mean streak going in which I'm saying to myself "this isn't a race. This is a fight." I even intentionally try to take out racers who really frustrate me in trying to pass them. If the other drivers are crap, then you'll need to be as crappy to win.

Having said this, I'm actually enjoying the game despite the many Restarts I've had to make.

i understand about the roadrage, john, but pro settings & all flags are an absolute must. the frustration of being cut up by the AI, especially at the start, is another factor uve got to incorporate in realtime. if u go back to GT4 after playing TRD3 it is like a pleasure cruise because even round the ring in a viper on road tyres is only concerned about one or two factors, staying on the road, taking the corner faster etc. its pretty linear, whereas if uve got to worry about aggressive, sneaky & downright fast AI as well as handling characteristics that are not simply a matter of early braking to control (tyres in 4) then the thing starts to get parallel, which is what develops the driving muscle. if i find myself in a restart loop i admit i back out & take 5 or 10 off the AI so i can get through the discipline w/out extreme hairloss 1st go.

p.s. i found how to get on top of the atom opponents, that is use the x button for throttle as the cracker suggested & to nearly always use top gear.
 
Hmm I think I accidentally forgot to turn on pro sim yesterday when I did the Ultima Can Am cup. I played them again today with pro sim on and what the hell!? They are **** to drive compared to the Ultima GTR in the GT class. The Ultima Can am has three functions, crazy as hell wheelspin, lockup and spin out I was disappointed with that car. So far though the best races I've had was in the GT tuning class with the AI at 90%, so aggressive in very fast cars. At 110% though, its practically suicide.
 
Oh, let me tell you something. I was like "what the hell?" when I launched from the start of the Phillip Island NGT deal. My launch off the line was nothing compared to the other idiots behind me, trailing me like I was riding in a Geo Metro against Moslers and TVRs.

* I actually thought racing monster trucks was pretty cool. At least I raced monster trucks in an environment that punishes me for playing my all-time worst racing game, "Thunder Truck Rally." These bad boys epitomize racing thrills. It was pretty damn fun watching my monster truck do a killer wheelie off the line. * Formula 1000 and Global GT Lights are fun, but don't count out Formula BMW. The cars can handle a course quite well and takes just a little experience to prevent them from spinning out. Then too, they aren't as fragile as most formula-type racing cars. * I think I'm on Tier 14 as of this typing. * The John Palmer experience is very unique. You get five laps around a track with no one else on the course. You will not be scored if you leave the course. I probably would have preferred GT's model in which you only don't get scored if all four tires leave the track. Sometimes I just corner aggressively and end up having my lap not being counted. My favorite race car from that series was the Palmer Jaguar JP1. I heard it is a two-seat racing prototype that runs on environmentally-friendly fuel. It is a wonderful machine. I almost thought it was some brand-new Radical when I first saw it in pictures. We need some American designers to come up with the kinds of cool cars the United Kingdom (much less Europe) come up with. Imagine making a prototype race car in the mold of the JP1 powered by an LS2 Pushrod or something.

I have a few days left with my rental. I may end up trading "Pro Race Driver" with ToCA Race Driver 3. I'm keeping ToCA RD 2 since I'm almost finished with it. I SOOOO dig the Palmer Jaguar JP1. Make me one, dudes!
 
Well I was playing around with the GT cars on bathurst with the AI at 95%, I was in the Mosler MT900. I started 5th and to my amazement since lap one the NGT class Morgan Aero 8 was racing against us, he was ahead of the Ultima and TVR and was riding my ass the whole way through the track. I was like "What the hell?!" an NGT class car is competing with and beating some of the GT class cars! He would drop back a little during the back stretch but throught the rest of the track he was giving us GT class drivers one hell of a competition. I thought it was interesting since after a few laps we were lapping the rest of the NGT class cars and yet this morgan was still being competetive with us GT class cars.

You can only program it so much to race around a track and challenge the player to come up with a plan to beat everyone. Each time I raced as hard as I can in a losing effort, I normally ask myself- THIS is better than a GT game? At least you have a chance in a GT game, and I rarely get knocked off the road by the AI when I'm running a sensible racing line. Nothing angers me in comparing GT's AI to another game's AI. It's such an open concept. What exactly is the complaint about AI racers in some games? Is it about being too challenging? Too easy? Too aggressive? That's why when I race a game and do a GT AI comparison, it's beyond me how to define good AI. You expect me to believe that you run the perfect race all for someone to knock you off the track and ruin your day... is normal? is realistic? It's another reason why I don't like incredibly challenging races. I've always believed in people on ANY level to have a chance to win. It is also why I'm not running Nürburgring Nordschleife three times a week. It's been too many times now that I've been leading or going higher, all to lose to some jackass who has the racing mentality of Tony Stewart or Kurt Busch. You want to make a flag system work? For each time I am running a perfect race until someone whacks me out of winning contention, DISQUALIFY THEIR F;censored:ING ASSES!!! When a race comes down to the AI being b*tchy, that's the fault of the AI programmers if the racer is performing the best race possible all for that racer to get screwed. Tenacious D said it best in the Forza thread in the XBOX forum:

People usually slammed me for me saying that AI is just AI. This is supposed to be a professional-style racing game, so why don't the AI race like it? Only a few times, my own wrongdoing cost me races. I don't know. I completely lack consistency. I don't know if it's me being under extreme pressure just to win a race in the game, myself having to battle the track and bad drivers, or just pure bad luck in this game. I just somehow lack consistency. It's almost as if I have to be damn near perfect to win most races. I sometimes consider losses as quality losses, but that all depends on what I did versus how good the leading car was. I try to race the car ahead very hard and I still lose. That is a quality loss I will accept. But if it's a race I would have, could have, should have won but failed to, that is NOT a quality loss. It is a screw job.

I'm currently doing World Tour, in which I'm doing the HPDC V8 Supercar Series. I normally have a strategic advantage in street course racing, but it's doing nothing for me in this Adelaide event. A lot of cursing and DualShock 2 throwing has resulted from my transgressions with the AI and ticky-tack warning flag periods for cutting corners. I think there has to be a halo rule with cutting corners. What kind of halo rule? Take American football for example. During a punt, you can't hit the punt returner before he has a chance to catch the ball. If you do hit him early on defense, the offense keeps the ball and gets 15 more yards. A halo rule for this racing game should be about what counts as course-cutting and trying to steer the car in the right direction. I don't think any positions should change hand until you're actually back on the race track. It's something I believe "F1 World Championship" for the Nintendo 64 (from my experience) had which would work better in this situation. If I drove off the track, I shouldn't feel like I should be penalized for passing a car while I'm trying to correct a spin off-course. Again, when road rage is the best way to win races, you know a game could have been much better in the offline racing department.

Now if you'll excuse me... I got some AI to fight. It's easily the second-worst AI in the PS2 series. Pro Race Thug (Pro Race Driver) is the worst, yet no one wants to believe me. One reviewer was talking about PRD couldn't decide on bein a sim racer or an arcade racer with the AI. And I'm like, "b:censored: just tell the s:censored: like it is and quit f:censored: with me." Then again, bad games are often sympathized by reviewers when they can just tell the straight-up truth.
 
Got this in the Easter sale on Play at the last minute for £25 on the PS2.

Mainly got it from the 2 reviews/items i've seen on it on OPSM2.
 
Wow, seems like the AI is being a little too rude to you John. I set my ai to race at around 90%-95% and they seem to be fine aggressive and clean. I've only been spun out by the Ai when I closed the door on a car tht was already 3/4 past my rear bumper. With Toca you constantly have to look around and make sure you aren'tg onna hit anyone. Usually when I get hit or spun its my fault, because I did not check before I merged into traffic.
 
Just got mine yesterday, and I am sooooo pleased... I really don't think it will in any way displace GT4 as my driving game of choice, but the amount of content this game has definitely will keep me busy for a long time...

Hope the community grows so we can have our own spot on GTP just like the Enthusia community here... There are just a lot of things to discuss on the TOCA series as a whole. I mean, Enthusia is just 1 game...:dopey:
 
I just bought this game with all the hype and online play.

I can see this game being great on controller but using DFP, it's just a joke.

It does not feel like you are driving at all.

Its just one big rubber pull on the corner, no feeling, doesn't tell you how much tire grip you have left or anything.

If you are planning to play this game on DFP with forcefeedback set to Hard, it's total junk.

Well since I whipped out the 50$ I will go play some more, I might even come back to say I like the game now, but as of my first impressions, it's totally inferior to GT4 on Driving Force Pro wheel.

If you fancy a great racing game, there's no better console racer. It is a little frustrating at times, but thats half the fun of it!!!

I say buy it - you won't regret it.

You've got to first realise what the A.I. is a substitue for i.e. a substitute for other human competitors. Therefore the A.I. should have human qualities like making mistakes and behaving agressively. TRD3's A.I. does act in this way, like real people do in a race. GranTurismo's A.I. act more like robots programed to follow a certain line no matter what anything else on the track is doing. I've seen TRD A.I. oversteer, spin, crash, make over ambitious overtaking moves and fish tail all over the place very much like a human would. I've only ever seen GT4's A.I. understeer when their tyres go off, bash into other cars like they didn't know they were there, or drive into walls and not have the intelligence to reverse away from it, spending the rest of the race trying to drive through the solid wall - i would expect a very basic robot to perform like this.

If you want your A.I. to consist of C3PO, Metal Mickey or K9 than GT4 is the way to go.

If you want your A.I. to be more like Senna, Earnhardt, Nakajima or Plato than TRD3 is the one to go for IMHO.

I agree with you matey! the best A.I. yet and if you look at the British Touring sheds on TV, then the A.I. needs to be more agressive!
Love the damage but not to keen on the off road racing. The slot car bit is fun as well as the R/C cars. The overall game can keep you happy for a long time.

Ok, I need a bit of help wth this, I've been trying to find a way of setting the in car camera so it's further back in the car than it currently is. I have the PC version of the game, and by editing the .big fiels there is a way. However, the way that I was told, was wrong otr I've understood it wrong, and the game crashed when I tried selecting that car. I reverted the figures back to how they originally were, and the game still crashed :odd: so I copied that file and backed it up, then I copied the file for another car of that type (I was testing it on the Clio Cup cars) and re-named the file to match the original, and now the first two Clio cup car's don't have any bodywork, it's just the interior, chassis, lights and wheels, and no body panels :lol:. If anyone else has the PC verison (I've posted in here becuase all the other RD3 threads arn't being used) could they upload a copy of the file

RaceDriver3/gamedata/cardata/rccu/rccu_00.big

to somewhere like yousendit.com (not rapidshare, that oesn't work on my connection) and it would be very, very much appreciated.

I did backup the original file, but after the first time it didn't work, I put it back in, then edited it without realising I'd moved the file back in, and not copied it again :dunce:. Racing with a bodyless Clio is funny, but I do want the clothes back :lol:.

I've just noticed something....

Pro-sim online is a LOT more realistic than Pro-sim single player in WT and pro career. Try it out, I can't understand why they would do that, although I'm glad since I always play this online :D
