Tuning Competition - Week 1

Welcome to the first ever Tuning Competition on GTPlanet. Here is everything you need to know to participate.

How it Works

I start the competition each Sunday, listing the name of the car you are to tune, and which track the settings will be tested at. You will not have to tune at that track, but it is highly recommended, since the judges will be testing there.

The judges are:
  • FireEmblem62
  • Dave_George
  • Scaff
  • Dark Elite
Once the judges are finished testing all the settings, they will rank each of them on the following categories:
  • Turn-in (entry to corners)
  • Mid-Corner response (whether the car under/oversteers mid-corner or holds the racing line well)
  • Corner exit (how quickly you can exit a corner whilst staying in good control)
  • Stability (rear end staying in line, car not 'jumping' or feeling skittish in turns)
  • Grip (start-offs, how much power can be used without the drive wheels losing traction? Does the car oversteer excessively?)
  • High-speed controllability (whether the car becomes 'frantic' and turns far too sharply at high speeds)
  • Handling while braking (are you able to easily turn the car while braking, and without going into oversteer?)
  • Acceleration (how good is it? Is there a lot of traction while doing it?)
Each category will be rated on a scale of 10 (with 10 being the best). Once the ranking is complete, all of the seperate ratings for a set-up from each judge will be compiled together for that one set-up. This is done with all the other settings, and the one with the highest ranking wins.

The judges will also write a mini-report about the settings, and how they felt driving them.

What to Tune, and Where to Tune At

You will have to tune the Opera 350Z @ Cote d' Azur (Monaco). You must use S3 tires, and no driving aids.

Rules

  • No Driving Aids (ASM, TCS is OK) allowed.
  • No ballast allowed.
  • You can tune the car in any way you wish, as long you use a reasonable amount of parts (ie don't slap on a sports suspension and a 1.5 LSD and expect to be rated high)
  • You must PM Me your settings, do not post them here. PM them in the following format:

Sweet... Im so entering this, A few questions though:

Do the tuning judges race in arcade or GT mode? Ive noticed that cars handeling differ from mode to mode, mainly arcade.

Is there going to be an "average" taken from the judges score to determine the total score?

Do faster mater at all? Say the car doesnt handle all that great but is really fast, does it matter?

Speaking for myself the only time I ever use Arcade is for photo-mode (getting a car in a colour I want), and am not aware that you can tune cars in Arcade?

For me a well set-up car will naturally be fast, so the two go hand in hand.

As far as the final score goes, thats a question for Duck to answer.

1. It's in GT Mode.

2. All the ratings from the judges for an individual set-up will have all rankings compiled together, and then that'll be the final score used in comparison to other set-ups.

3. It should handle good, but speed is also ranked, mainly in Acceleration and High-speed Controllability.


If anyone has any more questions, don't be afraid to ask.

and am not aware that you can tune cars in Arcade?

In arcade mode, you can only modify the transmission (AT or MT), adjust the HP, choose the tires, and modify the weight.
 
An excellent idea, Duck, even tho' a little fraught with subjectivity it should bring forth a nice consensus on what works with which car and what doesn't 👍.

One question that occurs is "Why no ballast?". In some cases, the only way to overcome a bias programmed in at source is to alter the weight distribution of the car (because it works to change the yaw centre, wheel-pair loading, effect of roll-centre leverage etc).

One suggestion also, it may be worth noting which control input was used for tuning i.e. a DFP gives you more incremental control but less ability to moderate traction loss instability.

Anyhow, there was a private forum which worked in this area for GT3 and it proved a great help to all concerned, so the best of luck to you. I may even be tempted to submit a tune or two, if only to see how much my driving style differs from the judges :).

Well, I outlawed it since to me, it's like ASM. Sure, it'll help, but it doesn't require a whole lot of skill to use correctly.

Hmm, good suggestion. I won't require tuners to list that detail, but they can do it. :)

Ah, come on, you know you want to. ;) You should post a lot of your settings.
 
This is a question relating to the use of AIDS, aimed specifically for those who play with a DS or DS2. It is not too hard to drive without both ASM's, but TCS is another question. It's...challenging...even on a good day, especially for those whose pressure sensitivity thing has, well, crashed and burned through excessive use. Can you make exceptions?

Now, it's been said that speed will be rewarded, aside from how the car handles. does this mean it's advisable to make the car as fast as possible?

On one hand, it's harder to tune a more powerful car, so you should get points for that.
On the other hand, a car that is set-up great, handles like a dream, but only has stock power, will not keep up.
Thoughts?
 
I think the amount of power should be upto the tuner just as wether to use NA, turbo or SC. I certainly dont like to just turn everything upto the max and I think that comparing the same car with different tunes states will make it even more interesting...although I see your point about speed. I guess I define speed as 'speed through corners', not actual straight line top speed - because all the tracks have corners and you wont acheive a mega-high speed on most of them and also Duck has accounted for acceleration separately in the criteria.

I say leave it up to the judges and let them explain themselves in the results because speed should be relative to the state of tune. :)

Another question I have is can we use Brake balance controller or is that a driver aid?

As far as I'm concerned the Brake Balance Controller is not a driving aid, rather an essential tool to maximising the use of the tyres and controlling the balance of the car under braking.

Correctly set brake balance is vital in the real world tuning of road and race cars, as such its not an aid, but tuning.

Nah, my workshop is my own. :sly:

But, every single set-up submitted goes into the wiki. I'll label the winner in there with "| Tuning competition week 1 winner". :)

Performance modifications is up to you. If you max out your car with performance mods, you'll probably get some extra points in the Acceleration rankings. But the flip side is that you can lose other points in the handling rankings.

Adding performance mods will give you more potential to get a higher score, but it can be risky.

I think of speed as acceleration for this. We're not ranking top speed. As with the speed through corners thing, I'm going to leave that up to the judges.

And the brake balance controller is fine.

Maybe every set-up from this thread need to be labelled as TCC (Tuning Competition Contestant) too. So people can learn what setting give good result for everyone.
 
@ OD19a - Possibly, I'll have to discuss that with the other judges.

@ Sucahyo - Meh, I really don't think it will benefit anyone. :indiff:

I will join this one,, even though I'm busy with school ( last three weeks:D),, Preparing for World Cup,, playing Pro Evo 5,, Workin on my gallery,, Participating in The virtual track days,,, and so on,, and so on;),, But this was my dream,, I must enter in the First comp.. You'll here from me Duck:)
 
I think I'll try this. Interesting thing is...I don't have a PS2 or a copy of GT4 right now. That's right, I'm gonna wing it! :sly:

'Blind tuning' a car will be an interesting challenge. I haven't messed with the Opera Z33 much, but I've spent a lot of time with a similar car. I'll try and base my settings on what I can remember from the other car.

P.S. Duck-Your submission form needs a field for the final gear ratio. ;)

That won't be easy to rank, since it requires skill from the driver, which not everyone has. :indiff:

The judges can put that in their final impression of the car if they want.

Wow had a go at tuning yesterday, but boy is thing hard to keep in a straight line, guna give it another go now see what I can come up with.

That scares me... I find it very neutral on and off throttle, with understeer on braking... are driving styles must be very different, which means the judges could think my car's tail-happy as crap, even though it's great for me... hmmmmm..

I guess so, I spent the whole time trying to keep the tail under controle durin heavy acceleration. Personally I hate the course and car, but Ive submitted my settings.

P.S. Yeh I found it to understeer slightly under breaking, especially if you break, let off the breaks and turn very quickly it tends to increase the understeer.

That's why there are 4 judges. A judge might think a set-up sucks, another one will think that that same set-up is the best, and the other 2 judges will think that the set-up is just ok. It should be all balanced out.

I have 6 entries for this comp so far (including me), and I'm expecting a few more. The judges will be very busy... ;)
