Updates from a Stranger

I'll try and update this as I update my photoblog. There probably won't be a lot of film uploads since it's a pain to get them developed due to my location but to kick things off I'll start with some film.

Gas station film shot on a Nikon F2 and a Lomo Actionsampler. Film was left out to weather and ended up developing some pretty mean mold.

15mm Sigma fisheye on the F2. Full frame fun.

Splitcam with more gas station film. The blue lines are scratches.

I'll post some abandoned building sets in a bit.

Firestone Building
I wish I knew some of the history on this place. It was part of a larger steel rod mill manufacturing plant. It's been abandoned for quite sometime. It's now neighbouring a recycling plant; making it a high risk task to get in but well worth it.

13. This was part of the active section. I had to run out between recycling runs (bulldozer moves in, bulldozer moves out) every 2 minutes. It was fun to duck behind walls, slither through shadows, aka Metal Gear Solid for reality.

I've always been a big fan of your building photography, I just love those B&W shots, and that "creel rom" shot 👍 Was there a lot of photoshop edit to these?

Also, that 15mm Sigma fisheye shot is awesome!

Thanks gents.

Was there a lot of photoshop edit to these?

The building shots I think were pretty untouched. The black and whites have a a lot of editing, some using Alienskin; others Digidaan BW action. Either way a lot of dodging and burning go into the both. My film shots are usually untouched.

That building would be freaking amazing to shoot cars in!

PRECISELY what I was thinking, increeeeeeeeeeeeeedible location to snap a modern car.

awesome pictures man, very good colours if they are not edited, and the B/W shots are also very well managed, very good everything! welcome (:

Imagine the 1st and second pic with a reventon

*edit* ok I couldnt help but photoshop it, a crap rush job, but enought to get the point across.

Love number 11, reminds me of a shot taken by James Nachtwey in War Photographer.

Thanks Lloyd. Damn good movie. Another one of my favourites is Manufactured Landscapes.

Skyline, you provide the car and I'll provide the place. A word of warning, I'm not sure if we could drive a supercar past the security guards, and the 5 foot in diameter hole in the wall you need to climb through to get in; but I think it's worth a try. When I get home I'll check a resource for anything abandoned in Fullerton. Are there any major cities around you think might have some good stuff?

Actually i've moved to surprise arizona, but anything in the general phoenix area works for me. The only thing I've found so far is "phoenix trotting park" where I shot lavi but theres no way in hell to get a car there.

As far as guards go, some of them get pretty jaded by supercars and beautiful women. you'd be amazed what you can get away with that you cant when your by yourself haha.

Dude - send me a shout next time you go exploring abandoned buildings. If you're within a 50km drive of Toronto, I'd love to join in :D

Hah, we can wait until I go back to Ryerson and then put ourselves at risk in some empty spots. exige can come too. It will be an awesome meeting filled with periods of awkward silences.

RYERSON?!?!?!!?!?!? YEEAAA MAAAN!!

I graduated from there last year. I'm guessing you're in the photography program?

July

Just the random shots I've taken throughout July. I spent a lot of time driving so most will be out the window of a car. There's a bunch of film shots that go with these but I won't be getting them developed until later.

Another good set there tait. I particularly like the pylons (3), the twigs (7) and the raindrops (10).

Another Toronto weekend. I spent about $100 on 12 rolls of medium format film and then another $60 or so on a 4gig card in preparation for the d300 I'm picking up on Thursday.

Thas some ballin' shtuff you got. The multiple exposure is spot-on. You colours are perfect for the **** weather that's been dumped on us for the past while as well...

Tait, you've got a pretty gooood eye for urban stuff, I love how you make every B/W picture of a place you take makes them look disolate and somewhat sad, great feeling and some awesome composition on most of them, I specially like the road pictures, the grain on them look splendid!!!

Thanks gents.
Yeah exige, the weather has been pretty poor to most, but I loves me a good storm and rainy day. I'll be moving back to Toronto in late August.

I love how you make every B/W picture of a place you take makes them look disolate and somewhat sad,

Nailed it, exactly what I go for. Thank you.

Some new ones from Nova Scotia with the d300. These are only a small chunk out of the thousands. I'll have more later.

Ooooooh, schweeet!

My favourit is the second image, did you apply any effects on any parts of the picture? It's probably the un-focused bit on the background that does it, the little workhouse or whatever it is, comes so much forward, I love it! 👍

Some nice shots there Tait. Interesting in that there's plenty to see in things that I probably wouldn't have shot, much less published. I definitely need to work on my 'eye'.

In time it will come. The problem is on that trip I was so busy taking pictures like those that I rarely took images for pure documentation. People would ask to show them some of Nova Scotia and all I had were closely zoomed trees, lobster traps, and artsy fartsy horizons.

This is the "Where have you been?" post. I've been doing stuff I guess. I scored a major fashion shoot, and a wedding. Both have really taught me a lot about photography.

School assignment.

DIY Tiltshift lens. Basically, medium format lens attached to plunger bellows, attached to the camera. It lasted 5 minutes before crumbling but hey it worked.
