Spec III download troubles

Is it just me or does this not download. I have probably tried 100 times and cannot get it to even start. The internet connection works fine on PS3 Home page, but cannot get it to work in GT download. It started downloading just fine about 2 weeks ago and now...won't even start. I am worried that I may have started downloading an old update and not in the middle of it, it is trying to get spec III.

any adivce?

Do you have anything running on your network or PC that may be hogging bandwidth? Have you tried to do the download when your PC is off, freeing all bandwidth for the PS3?

Have you had any problems with the previous GT5P updates?

It has been suggested to delete you "Game Data" (not your game save data) and then retry the update.

What is you HDD space situation? Do you have free space or are you almost filled up?

How close are you to picking up the phone to call Sony? Tech support may be able to trouble shoot some things.

Do you have multiple PS3's running? We have two in our house and when the store updates on Thursdays, if I'm grabbing anything, PS3 #2 gets knocked off the network (logs out) and any PC on the internet crawls. Synopsis, the PS3 is a download bandwidth hog.

Synopsis not true! There are two PS3s in this house (sometimes 3) and we have downloaded simultaneously without issues. We're both on wireless with dynamically allocated IPs.

Oh, ok. I'll tell my wife and kid, they are imaging they can't surf the web and download stuff on the other PS3. Synopsis, talk a walk in my shoes. You'd have to take your foot out of your mouth first.

Do you have anything credible you can help the OP to resolve his problems?

Unfortunately, the problem isn't the system, or simultaneous downloads. I've had downloads going on the PS3, and the PC, while playing Unreal III online (PC), and it only ever slowed down a tad.

The problem is this damn game. I'm sorry, but whatever method Polyphony is using for these downloads just plain sucks. I've yet to have one go smoothly... I can't just start the download and walk away, I have to sit there and restart it again and again. And again. And again. Eventually it finishes, and I've wasted an hour or so of my time watching a progress bar.

They either need to A) find a new method, or B) ditch the in-game downloads entirely and just offer them up through the PSN Store as a downloadable addon.

It is true that some people don't have any problems with the downloads, and I wish like hell I knew what made their connection different. But I've yet to find a fix... just sit there (grab a book) and keep restarting it until it finishes.

Since they are using torrents for downloading expansion data to make things go quicker, they (SONY) needs to employ this method throughout. Even the MGS Beta was downloaded via torrent. It's a very efficient way of downloading within the network.

I agree, there really is no excuse for this and it should have been fixed after the very first update revealed a flawed download system.

It's amazingly weird how some people are plagued by cut offs, while others are not. Could you imagine if the PSN Store had issues of this magnitude!

Obli, I'm sorry for being a bit harsh on you dude.

Wow, you're grumpy. I was only saying that we don't have a problem downloading simultaneously with more than one Playstation here so you know it's not a problem that plagues all PS3s. Sorry I don't have a resolution for you, I wanted to let you know my experience.

No, I thought you did a good job with the fault-finding questions.

EDIT 1: Actually, I'd delete the game data as a last resort otherwise you'll have to reinstall the game and re-download all the updates. Is the download still failing to start after the PS3 has been switched off and back on again? Can you cancel the update prompt when the game starts and go to the main menu and try downloading the update from the News section (people report it is more reliable).

I've had issues with an update for Everybody's Golf where the screen just went blank a few times when the update was started. After a few restarts, mysteriously the update downloaded fine and the screen didn't go blank.

EDIT 2: I forgive you :)

I've only had the PS3 for a month and GT is the only game thus far. I was a huge fan of GT 1 and 2 and then my wife was cool and got me a PS3 for my b-day. With this said, HD space is not an issue. its the 80Gb version and plenty of space available. I can surf the PS Store no problem, but GT just creates havoc, constantly erroring out.

I was not able to get the download done before Spec III, but I at least was able to get it started. The progress bar would get about half way, and then error. I found out now that many others have had the problem and just retrying a hundred times evenutally get's it done, but now I can't even get to the progress bar. It errors before anything starts downloading. Tried clearing the cache, chaing to Mode 2 on UPnP, and even a direct wired connection vs. wireless. I am wondering if it is in between downloading the old update and the Spec III update. SO if I understand this correctly, Dave's suggestion of

"It has been suggested to delete you "Game Data" (not your game save data) and then retry the update."

would not delete my credits, race history and garage?

I would hate for that to happen. Cripes, all I have left is S-6, 7, and 10 (which are a beeotch by the way). Going to try The Dr.'s tune suggestion on the clio. Any way to back it up to a Flash Drive before trying the delete in case I screw it up?

Your help is appreciated.

EDIT 1

Response to the below: I have tried resetting, redoing network connections, turning off other computers in the house among multiple other things. SHort of calling Sony and deleting game, I have had no luck. I run into the same prolem when trying the News section as well.

I can't think what else you could try. Sounds like your connection and Playstation are fine and as you said, the game is the culprit. I think your game data is corrupt.

So, you get no progress bar (not even the bar outline) ? What error message (if there is one) comes up when you attempt to update?

It might be time for plan B - to reinstall the game...

Your credits, cars / garage and event progress are saved in one file named 'Gran Turismo 5 Prologue' found in the Playstation's XMB under Game > Save Data Utility. By hovering over the file, it should show a description of the file and clarify that is what it is. The game install and updates etc. are under Game > Game Data Utility - this is the data that I believe is corrupt and needs deleting / reinstalling.

This is what I would do:

+ Put in a USB memory stick.
+ On the XMB, under Game, go to 'Saved Data Utility'.
+ Find the file called 'Gran Turismo 5 Prologue' and ensure it's description confirms it is your game progress file. You can also back up any replays you have - they will also appear within the 'Saved Data Utility' as seperate files for each replay.
+ Press triangle on the appropriate file(s) and choose Copy - copy to your memory stick. Ensure the correct file(s) are on the memory stick before proceedeing further!
+ Remove your memory stick for now.
+ Go to 'Game Data Utility' and delete the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue data (mine's about 6.5GB in size!).
+ Restart the Playstation.
+ Load up Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and you should be prompted to reinstall the game.
+ After the reinstall, run through all the game's updates from the News section.

Deleting and reinstalling the game might leave the saved game progress and replay files within 'Saved Data Utility' but if not, copy the backed up file(s) from your memory stick back to your Playstation after the install.

I hope this works for you if you decide to do this. Good luck!

Awesome stuff. I will give it a shot and reply with what happens.

The progress bar pops up for about .5 seconds and then I get an "Error" "download Failed" message.

Sweetness! It worked. Thank goodness. I was starting to get frustrated. Lots of changes from the version I was running. I like the higher prize amounts, makes it faster and easier to get into different cars.

Thanks a ton for your help guys! I appreciate it.

Good job Obli 👍

Wildh, glad you got your problem situated. There's no telling what SONY may have had you do depending on the CSR you would have gotten. Sending in your PS3 seems to be their quick solution. Even for a controller malfunction.

since the update i have no sound from the game, anybody else have this problem?

thanks...

Sounds like a strange one, I know this going to sound obvious but have you checked the settings to make sure the sound isn't disabled?
Other than that I'm stumped.

Massive problems over here as well. This past weekend I tried again, from the launch of the game--fail. Then, inside the News section--fail. The first try it nearly got 1/2 way, then just puked out.

I don't really understand, I have plenty of room, and have downloaded a lot of other things for games on the PS3 with no problems. Is there anyway to get it on a PC USB stick, and bring it over that way? For me, the patch is simply not working, period :(

When it fails, just retry the download and keep repeating until it completes. The progress bar will suggest the download has started from the beginning but the download will resume from where it failed. It'll get there, eventually, providing you don't quit the game / turn off your PS3 between retries.

Errr, well you can quit the game, i did to check my progress during my update - session for SPECII (J) when it appeared to dl in 2MB steps... LOL
Other than that you're absolutely right ^^
Halfway through means it's almost done.👍

I bought a PS3 used from Craigslist a few months ago. It came with GT5P and I've been hooked since the first time I played it. I tried to download the update several hundred timies and couldn't get it to work. I looked on many forums for a solution with no luck. I finally read this and it worked! Thanks

Great! You're welcome. I'm glad it worked for you too.

I wonder how many others that are having trouble downloading the update have corrupt game data...

This is my situation :

I have a 60 GB launch PS3, GT5P (jp) spec 2 BRD version.
Now I bought a new 80 GB PS3, transferred the data to my new HDD and then the trouble started.

I couldn't get the update to spec 3 before, it just didn't work ( as described above ) - and of course it doesn't work at the moment, but unlike before I can't even access my own save file, because obviously that was saved in Spec II, whereas on my Blu-ray disk I still have spec I so to say.

So basically I reinstalled my game and now I try to download spec 3 - I get like 5% every time, then it stops.

Any ideas ?
Is there no possibility to download spec 2/3 to my PC and then update via USB stick ?

When it fails goto to the news to re start and it will carry on form when it failed.

It is normal for it to fail a few times just keep trying.

Yes, restart downloading again from the news button. I just reformatted my PS3 and reinstall/ update Prologue again last night. It is slow but eventually will work..👍

Thanks for the reply, I'm actually doing this right now. I'm on 5066 MB total now, I don't know how many MB's are missing though. I guess it should be around 6 or 6.5 GB.

What I wonder though, I'm probably downloading spec 3 now and my game save is still on spec 2, I hope that this doesn't turn out to be my next problem.

I tell you one thing, replacing my Xbox360 took exactly 10 seconds :

I took off my old HDD, put it on my new Xbox360 and that was it. Whereas here it took ages to copy my old data to an external HDD and after I copied it to my new PS3 I still had to do tons of stuff like this issue here and re-downloading GT HD, reactivating my 3 accounts ( eu/jp/us ), adjusting all the console settings and what not.

But unlike my 360, which was the same after my 10 sec HDD swap, my PS3 now has lost all the demos and like 20% of my gamesaves - FOREVER.

I mean I wouldn't complain that much if we had July 07, but Sony wasn't able to do their job since almost 2 years - the Xbox360 on the other side worked right from the beginning in 2005. It's not just this, PSN is a joke compared to XBL. Nah, whatever, I hope that at least the GT5P update works, seems to load pretty quickly, I guess most people are sitting around a christmas tree right now - good for me ;)

It should be fine but you tunes and game settings will all be reset to default.

I'm at 5778 MB now, what a joke. I'm basically in front of that f'ing loading screen all the time, how difficult can it be to provide a proper online service - both for downloads and online play ( private games with friends etc ) ?

Seriously, wtf, it's 1 am now, I'm like loading that cr** for ages now, how big is this file ?
Well, it's certainly bigger than 6,73 GB, that's for sure

I also fear that tomorrow is a very slow day on PSN, that's why I wanted to finish the download today. But no, that freaking file has to have the size of all SNES games every made together. :grumpy:

Edit : Finally... :)
