Just thought i'd post this up, found it interesting to 'see' what all these big figures mentioned recently look like.

All this talk about "stimulus packages" and "bailouts"...

A billion dollars...

A hundred billion dollars...

Eight hundred billion dollars...

One TRILLION dollars...

What does that look like? I mean, these various numbers are tossed around like so many doggie treats, so I thought I'd take Google Sketchup out for a test drive and try to get a sense of what exactly a trillion dollars looks like.

We'll start with a $100 dollar bill. Currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation. Most everyone has seen them, slighty fewer have owned them. Guaranteed to make friends wherever they go.

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2" thick and contains $10,000. Fits in your pocket easily and is more than enough for week or two of shamefully decadent fun.

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000). You could stuff that into a grocery bag and walk around with it.

While a measly $1 million looked a little unimpressive, $100 million is a little more respectable. It fits neatly on a standard pallet...

And $1 BILLION dollars... now we're really getting somewhere...

Next we'll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. This is that number we've been hearing about so much. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it's a million million. It's a thousand billion. It's a one followed by 12 zeros.

You ready for this?

It's pretty surprising.

Go ahead...

Ladies and gentlemen... I give you $1 trillion dollars...

(And notice those pallets are double stacked.)

So the next time you hear someone toss around the phrase "trillion dollars"... that's what they're talking about.

That's awesome. Makes me wonder how big a quadrillion dollars is.
I wonder if there's even that much money in the world.

:-)

I just came...

How many money towers would Scrooge McDuck have if he had a trillion dollars?!

That amount of money is just unbelievable! You could swim in that much money! Imagine if it was made of pennies... :droll:

That sure gives us a good idea of exactly how much money we're talking about here, since nowadays these numbers get tossed around as if it were pocket change. 👍

Well... A big packet of one dollar bills are easier to carry around than one huge jar with the same amount of money in the form of quarters.

Just think of the amount of money in "rounding errors" there is.

If I owe you $1.27, and I pay you back $1.30, I'm only out three cents. I can live with that. If I owe you $12.70, I'll probably give you $13, and that'll be that. It's only $0.30

But if I owe you $1.27bn, you sure as all hell aren't going to see me giving you $1.3bn. That's thirty million dollars of an error right there. I don't care who you are, you're going to miss thirty big ones.

Why doesn't the media understand this?

The media doesn't understand basic economic principles. Don't expect it to do multi-digit finance.

Giles Guthrie, I believe you would like Office Space, which deals in a way with what you are saying

I wonder when we'll start talking about quadrillion in relation to GDP and budgets and that sort of thing.

Probably won't be long if they keep printing money backed by dreams.
