Simulated Driver Change

There will be one mandated (simulated) driver change during the race which must take place in a specified time window. To simulate the change a driver will pause during a regular pit stop for 5 minutes. The time window is long enough that it will throw some interesting dynamics into the race and it will also allow the participants to take a small break during the race for a stretch, drink or a real life pit stop during this challenging event.

Specifics:
  1. To begin the simulated driver change enter the pits as normal during the driver change window (race clock between 1:00:00 to 1:30:00).
  2. Begin the pit stop as normal allowing AI to take over and then selecting tires and added fuel amount and select OK
  3. After that screen is dismissed hit "Start" which will show the options buttons ("resume", "chat", "options" and "exit").
  4. As long as you see those option buttons you will not be released from your pits. Do not click any buttons including chat or you will be released when you dismiss that screen.
  5. The AI will drive the car into your pit stall and begin your normal pit stop. At this point you should be watching the race timer and the crew member with the release flag.
  6. When the flag man raises the release flag, your 5 minute wait officially begins.
  7. Note the race clock time and write it down. Then manually add 5 minutes and write down this time which is when you can leave the pit stall.
  8. Take a break, stretch, pat your dog and do whatever else makes you feel refreshed.
  9. After the target time has been reached on the race timer hit start and proceed with the remainder of your race.

Driver Change Verification and Infractions:
  • All driver changes will be reviewed by a race steward and penalties applied for improper execution before the results will become official.
  • If you do not serve the total 5 minutes a double time penalty will be applied to your finish time. e.g. if you serve only 4 minutes then 2 minutes will be added to your finish time.
  • If you accidentally leave the pits early you can avoid a penalty by returning to the pits and serving all of the remaining time on the *very next* lap.
  • Drivers will be reminded during the race of the pit window: An announcement when the window begins and a 5 minute warning before the end of the window.
  • Any driver that doesn't attempt a proper driver change will be DQ'd and removed from the official results.


Qualification

Drivers can attempt to qualify for either class (or both). Drivers that attempt to qualify for the LMP class will have to satisfy minimum speed criteria (see below). The top qualifying drivers from each class will participate in the "A" race. Drivers who do not make the cutoff will serve as reserves for "A" and participate in a "B" race (assuming there are enough drivers to race in a second lounge). Drivers that do not meet the minimum speed requirement for LMP can qualify for GT class. Drivers that meet the minimum speed requirements for LMP, but end up on the reserve list can also attempt to qualify for the "A" race in the GT class and can move up to LMP if a spot opens up before race day based on their qualifying order.

Qualifying will take place during the two weeks prior to the race event (see windows below). Drivers can arrange ad hoc sessions with an approved steward at any time during the window. All qualifying sessions will require a steward to set up the lounge to proper specs and will consist of short "races" which are observed and verified by stewards and other drivers. Standard WRS track rules are in effect during these races and any infractions will be penalized a minimum of 2 seconds per incident unless it is beyond a reasonable doubt that the "infraction" had a negative impact on the lap time. Each driver can attempt qualifying for a class only once (one shot per class).

Qualifying Race Procedure
  1. A race steward will set up the lounge to the proper specs for the class.
  2. The driver will be given an out lap and a single hot lap in free run for a final warm up if desired (Drivers should come to the session already warmed up and prepared).
  3. After the completion of the practice hot lap the race timer will be started.
  4. The qualifying steward and any other observers will monitor the race live to validate the run and save a replay in case of any protest.
  5. The qualifying races will consist of 4 laps (GT) or 5 laps (LMP): 1 un-timed out-lap + 2/3 timed hot-laps + 1 un-timed in-lap.
  6. When the driver finishes the final hot lap he should slow down and park on track before finishing the in-lap.
  7. Lap times and any infractions will be noted and announced by the steward.
  8. When the driver and steward are in agreement on the recorded net lap times the driver can exit the track.

Qualifying Time
  1. The drivers single best hot lap will determine his starting position on the grid.
  2. LMP minimum speed criteria will involve the average of a driver's best two hot laps which must be under 2'05.50.
  3. Any driver in either class that demonstrates in qualification or practice sessions that he cannot keep the car in control and on the track consistently or maintain a reasonable pace will not be allowed to participate in the enduro race. The stewards and event organizers will make that call if it is deemed necessary.

Miscellaneous
  • Any disagreement over infractions will be handled via replay review.
  • If a GT class driver disconnects before finishing 1 hot lap he can return to re-run a qualifying race.
  • If an LMP class driver disconnects before finishing 2 hot laps he can return to re-run a qualifying race.
  • Any lap completed (and time noted by steward) prior to DC will be counted and the lap count reduced for the 2nd attempt.
  • A driver will not be allowed to rerun a qualification lap if he DCs after damage occurs to the car in the lap, but he can rerun subsequent laps.

Scheduling a Qualifying Session

Drivers should post to the thread requesting a steward to observe their qualifying run and the day/times you would be available. To maximize the chance of making a match with a steward please provide a few times and give a bit of up front notice. Stewards may also post that they have qualifying rooms ready in case anyone is ready to qualify. During those steward prompted sessions the lounge will be set up for free run practice until someone is ready to qualify. Drivers are welcome to practice during these sessions and observe others qualification runs. All qualifying runs must take place in private lounges (not public lobbies).

A few common track infractions at Spa that will result in a time penalty
  • Running wide exiting La Source (turn 1)
  • Cutting Eau Rouge anywhere including bottom of hill to start, middle or exit
  • Cutting anywhere in Les Combes (right-left chicane to start T2)
  • Going wide on Malmedy
  • Cutting or going wide exiting Turn 11 (left after Rivage hairpin)
  • Going wide on Pouhon (turn 12) mid corner or on exit approaching Fagnes
  • Going wide on Stavelot 2 (turn 16)
  • Cutting inside grass at Blanchimont or going wide beyond right rumbles on exit (turn 18)
  • Cutting final chicane (turns 19/20)
  • Going wide on exit of final chicane.

Finalizing Your Class

All drivers who have attempted to qualify for the LMP class and have met the minimum speed requirement must state their class intentions by Tuesday 11:59 AM Pacific. There are three options:
  1. Commit to LMP. GT qualifying not required and any existing GT qualifying times will be disregarded.
  2. Commit to GT. GT qualifying required, LMP qualifying disregarded.
  3. Reserve LMP. Driver commits to running GT unless a confirmed LMP driver cancels after the deadline. In the event of a cancellation of an LMP driver the reserves will be offered a spot in the LMP class in the lounge/grid position based on their qualifying time. (Driver could go from reserve to LMP-A if his time is faster than all LMP-B drivers).

Rolling Starts By Class

TBD. Each class will run a formation lap with a rolling start. We will arrange it so that the car classes are separated by some good % of the track so that the individual fields spread a little by the time the LMP cars being the first round of overtakes. Details TBD.

Mixed Class Racing Rules

Both classes must share the road and show some courtesy to the other class!

GT Class Ground Rules:
  • Be predictable. Pick your line and and hold it. Don't suddenly change your line thinking it will allow faster cars to pass. You will just surprise them and mess up any plan they've already made to get around you. If you are taking a corner on the inside hold that line on exit and allow the LMP to pass outside. If you are on an outside line in a corner, maintain that line on exit.
  • Have good situation awareness. Understand what cars and how many are around you. Is there one LMP car attempting to pass or a pack of 3. Where do the LMP cars have a big advantage over you (straight, under braking, mid corner).
  • Do not block: GT class drivers do not have to move aside for an approaching LMP car, but they are not allowed to "block" or interfere with an LMP car trying to pass.

LMP Class Ground Rules:
  • Be Patient: Your job is to get around the GT class drivers responsibly. Do not dive bomb the GT class drivers under braking putting them in jeopardy if you make a mistake. Understand where you car holds the advantage and utilize those areas to execute passes safely.
  • Have good situation awareness. If GT class drivers you are approaching are engaged in close battles don't expect them to stop their battle and let you go by. You may have to slow and pick your passing lines carefully. You may lose a gap you've built over a competing LMP driver behind you, but that's the nature of multi-class racing. Everyone has a right to the road and everyone is going to get stuck behind a slower car at some point in the race.

Remember every driver has their own style and approach to the course. You should take advantage of practices and support races to get to know your competitors and their driving styles and their skill level regardless of which class they are racing. Some drivers have more car control than others, some are more comfortable maintaining close proximity to other cars and some may back off with other cars around.

This event is for fun and drivers of all skill levels are welcome. If you have a problem with that then this probably isn't the event for you. Unintentional mistakes are going to happen, but this is a very long race and you have plenty of time to recover (light damage). However, at the same time, all drivers are expected to drive at a pace in which they can consistently control their car and not jeopardize other drivers. Do not drive faster than your ability to control the car. If during practices and races you are not able to consistently control your car you may be removed from the race and/or demoted to a lower race class at the stewards discretion.

Race End

  • At 2.4 hours (2:24:00.000 on the race clock) the "white" flag will be waved (a steward will announce "white flag" over voice chat).
  • The first time the leader passes the finish line after the white flag is waved the checkered flag is waved and the leader's race is over. I.e. the first lap completed after 2.4 hours completes the leaders race. After passing the start/finish line the leader should immediately slow to 50 MPH and announce the checkered flag (by voice or press start and type "Checkered Flag" if he doesn't have voice). No car should pass him at any time going forward. Any close finishes at the line will be reviewed with replay for the official results.
  • After the checkered flag is waved all drivers complete their current lap and their race is finished when they next pass the finish line. They should line up behind the train of cars that have already finished moving at 50 MPH. When the last car passes the start/finish line we will announce race end, record the results and then allow everyone to exit track and save the replay.

Important notes for the Support races. (note: the two formation laps and GT getting a head start will NOT apply to the Enduro on Sunday)

Summary:
  1. All races will take place in GTP_3D3_A and mics will be disabled.
  2. The races will be set to 25 laps.
  3. The lounge will be open about 1 hour before the race begins -- watch thread for announcement.
  4. Be on time (at least 5 minutes early, but preferably 15).
  5. Regulation checks will begin promptly at race start time.
  6. There will be 2 formation laps for GT and 1 formation lap for LMP.
  7. The formation lap speed limit is 62 mph / 100 kph and a staggered two wide formation will be used.
  8. No tire warming procedures allowed during formation laps.
  9. Pits are open for the entire race and there is a required short pause in the pits to simulate a driver change.
  10. The race finish delay will be set to 130 seconds (2:10) which is the "average" lap time between the classes.

Regulation Checks:

All drivers should be in the lounge at least 5 minutes before the race start time. We will begin reviewing these rules at that time. Mics are disabled so it will take a little longer to get all the instructions out. Once the steward begins to type out the instructions please refrain from using the text chat unless you have an important question.

At the race start time we will begin regulation checks. You will be called by name to enter the lounge with the GT drivers entering first in starting order and then LMP cars after regs are updated. Do not enter the course until your name is called and do not exit to the lobby once you are entered.

Stay in the pits until the system places you on the starting grid and then we'll begin the formation lap procedures above.

Formation Laps:

GT cars will leave the grid in order of qualifying and run a single file formation lap at 80 mph (faster than normal formation). Basically the goal of this lap is just to get around fairly quickly and reform for formation Lap 2. At the same time the LMP cars will leave the grid and immediately pull to the right against the wall before turn 1.

The GT cars will finish lap 1, pass the parked LMP cars and start lap 2 of their formation lap. The GT class should proceed on formation lap 2 at 62 mph/100 kmh. The LMP cars will wait until the GT cars are all clear of Eau Rouge and then begin to form up in qualifying order and begin their own formation lap at 62 mph /100 kmh. The LMP cars should maintain about a 1 sector gap to the GT cars for most of the formation lap. The pole LMP car is responsible for setting a steady pace while allowing the group to keep together.

The GT cars will finish their 2nd formation lap and being the race on lap 3 *after* turn 1 heading down to Eau Rouge. The race will not start at the timing line, you must hold formation until after turn 1. The target start line is the "Total" sign going down the hill, but the lead car must wait until the last GT car has formed up after clearing Turn 1. At that point it's up to the lead GT car to accelerate to start the race and all other cars can speed up when the car in front of you does so.

The LMP cars will follow the same procedure and starting point, but the goal will be to time their start so that the lead GT cars are just getting into sector 3 when the LMP cars accelerate to race pace.

The 62 mph formation laps should be taken in staggered formation. The lead car will take the right side of the track. The second car should take to the left side of the track and alternate all the way back. This helps keep a tighter pack while maintaining better visibility versus single file. Cars should not "overlap" with the car in front of them. The lead car should let the pack "close rank" after the final chicane and again after turn 1 before the race starts.

Simulated Driver Change:

We want to practice the simulated driver change from both a drivers and stewards perspective in case there are any questions or issues before the main event on Sunday. We will follow the same procedure except the required stops will be much shorter and every driver must simulate the driver change on their first pit stop. The GT cars must "pause" for 30 seconds and the LMP cars must "pause" for 60 seconds. Any failure to pause will result in a double-time penalty. So if you fail to stop at all and were required to do so for 30 seconds you will have 60 seconds added to your finish time and lose any positions as a result. If you stop for only 25 our of the required 30 seconds you will incur a 5 x 2 = 10 second penalty.

Finish:

Between the extra formation lap and shorter pit pause the two classes should finish the race pretty closely. I'm not sure who will actually finish first, but all cars should have a fair chance to complete the race before the timer expires. We are not setting max finish delay to minimize racing for position between AI controlled cars.

As soon as I find out what Division I'm in (already sent my qualifier PM to Vaxen), I'll be registering. Look for me in the GT class; no way can I control a 908 for 2.4 hours. :lol:

I like the 5 min. driver change idea. A little break mid race will be nice.

Qualifying is actually flexible without any fixed time slots. You can post to this thread when you are ready and available and hopefully a steward can jump online and verify your run and then add your qualification results to the database. We will probably end up naming a couple additional stewards to make it that much more likely someone will be available when drivers are ready to qualify.

Remember don't qualify until you are ready as every driver has one and only one shot.

I'd been practicing with the ZR1 quite a bit and found a nice setup. Switched to the Z06 and starting over on the setup. Actually their pretty close on handling I'm finding out. Setups translate well from one to the other. The Z06 is a bit slower, maybe 1 second per lap max. for me. Seems slightly better on tires though.

Mainly because we had to limit the ZR1 so much with the power limiter (70%) that the power curve was flat and at that level left us no room to slow it down further just in case we have to make any adjustments for multi-class racing/passing.

Honestly it was somewhat of a a split-decision among the admins and it could have gone either way. In any case we're going to use that ZR1 at full power (in a one make race) in the not too distant future because a bunch of us fell in love with that car. Sorry you put some time into it, but hopefully it won't go to waste and mostly will translate to the Z06. Plus you'll be ready when we use the ZR1. 👍
 
Wow, very impressive organization, Tim! I have only one question at this point (maybe it's there but I missed it), are you planning to have 8 cars of each type on the grid (assuming there is enough interest in each class)?

We are definitely planning to have the "A" lounge split down the middle in terms of classes. Whether that's 6/6, 7/7 or 8/8 is going to be determined by testing lag and whether or not we can come up with a viable VOIP system to carry voice outside of the PS3.

In the "B" lounge we'll be more flexible and it will depend on who is running and what cars they are interested in. It would be nice if it were close to 50/50 and that's the target, but we'll be flexible.

For the support races we'll also be flexible in terms of mix, but we definitely want some participation from both classes so we all get extra practice racing with both classes on the track.

Both cars are a blast to drive, their in my top 10 favs in GT5.

Didn't mind practicing with the ZR1 at Spa, I love both.:)

I'm also running a TT at Spa this week in iRacing with the Dalara Indy car. So all the practice helps out nicely. Just have to remember to be easier on the throttle exiting corners with the Dalara, it will spin out very quick if your not gentle.

Anyway, looking forward to the Enduro, and the ZR1 race down the road.👍
 
hmmm .... need to read this carefully. I'm afraid I won't be able to qualify considering I almost only play on weekends and that I'll be away from home the two weekends from now (March 18 being the last day for quali in the LMP class, the one I wanted to be part of).
 
I'm in... sounds like great fun.

I have the opposite problem as Hun. I'm out of town the qualifying week, but should be able to arrange a session on the bracketing weekends.

All times quoted in the OP are for the race start. The lounge will open 30-60 minutes prior for pre-race free run practice. I filled out the driver database form for you when I saw you filled out the survey... special service since I was in the database anyway at the time. :sly:

The Saturday support races will *definitely* be shorter. The target at this point is 60 minutes so that amounts to about 25 laps. For the support races we plan to simulate as much from the Sunday Enduro as possible as far as the formation lap, rolling start and mixed class racing.

We also plan to hold some additional informal practice sessions (planned or ad hoc) where we'll do "practice races" to work on tunes, tire mgmt, drafting, etc. These will be less formal and will not require a sign up. They may be as short as 5-8 laps and will restart as necessary during the practice with free run sessions between them. Very much like our practice format for our weekly events. Schedule not known at this point, but just follow the thread and join if you can (it's optional).

It would be a shame if you miss the event due to scheduling problems with the Quali.

Let me (or any of the stewards) know if you can schedule an alternate quali time, and I'm sure we can get you to the grid 👍
It will have to be before the 18th though, as the final Quali results will be posted on the 19th.

The Quali itself can be done in about 15 minutes, so maybe a quick weeknight session?
