Really thinking of getting a wheel now!

I'm a massive GT5 fan and am really pleased with all the updates and most notably the recent physics changes (2.06) and now sound improvements (2.07).

I think it's now worth me investing in a wheel and seat but I wanted to get some opinions of different wheels and seats as the prices do vary.

I'm thinking of either a G27 or Driving Force GT and for a seat maybe a Playseat. I'm considering the Playseat because it's practical to pack away but I've also heard it's not the strongest seat out there for the money.

If anyone has any recommendations for a setup please let me know.

Cheers

I've never tried a seat but G25/G27 has been a brilliant wheel for the past 4 years so that I can highly recommend. The pedals are much better than on the DFGT and you also get a clutch and a shifter.

I recommend the G27 over the DFGT. It's well worth the extra cash 👍

I use a wheelstand pro, so cannot really recommend on the seat. The wheelstand is pretty good as it is, for adjustability :)

I've been using the Driving Force GT for a couple of years now. My only complaint is that when I purchased it originally, the brake pedal would sometimes not come back up all the way, and even if it's still 1% engaged, it lowers the top speed of the car by a good 30 mph and if you go in the sand, you can't get back out. But I sent it back to Amazon and the replacement has worked fine ever since. I've platinumed Shift 1, Shift 2, and Ferrari Challenge with it, as well as spent countless hours with GT5. So it's seen a lot of use. Anything that can withstand me practicing those X2010 Vettel challenges for hours on end without being broken into bits must be pretty darned sturdy!

I'm thinking of upgrading to a G27, just because I use my wheel enough that I think I should treat myself to a really good one. What I don't like though is that I have no intention of using the actual stick shift, but the D-pad and face buttons are on that part, so I'd have to mount it somewhere just to use those.

Please use the "Sim Racing Hardware" section of this forum for discussions about wheels and the like.

I personally have had a G27 and a Playseat WRC since christmas, and I love it. The Playseat seems durable. At least I haven't been able to break it in any way. It's a sturdy design, with the wheel being perfectly held in place. If you aren't to handy with tools, I'd recommend buying it. If, however, you are handy with tools. You could try to simply make your own.

Playseat setups are fairly expensive. So consider your options before buying one. As for the G27. I'd definately say go for it. It's a great middle/premium range wheel, and most racing games seem to support it.

This 👍!

I started with a DFGT, after a month or two I sold it off and ended up with a G27. After a month or two of that, I ended up buying the wheel adapter sold by chilicoke and mounted a MOMO wheel and aftermarket shift knob to it. It's weird at first but worthwhile in the long run, it doesnt feel like so much of a toy after putting that larger steering wheel on.

Whatever you choose, you'll have fun regardless! Good Luck!

I have a g27 and playseat I bought used on Craigslist. Ive had it for about two years. I love every driving minute. Paid 450 USD then. Great deal!

The g27 has not given me any problems aside from pedals getting filled with hair/lint and spiking, which a simple cleaning fixes.

The playseat is durable. Its a tad squeaky when you move because of the seat springs (others think its a problem but i could care less) but it's comfortable, easy to adjust to your liking and folds up small. Also the center bar gets flak but I drove with one foot and now two feet and I never touch it. It's all about how you adjust pedal plate and center bar.

DO IT!

I myself just bought a DFGT. At first I was a bit worried due to cost and the fact I can't use it with Forza, but a few hours later and my mind was changed.

Best investment in my opinion, especially if you're hardcore racer.

Now to build a rig and get rid of this flimsy TV tray...

Stop thinking and start doing.

Using a gamepad in a simulator is utterly stupid because it's not a simulator with a gamepad. YOu can't drive a real car with a stick, so why would you want to simulate it?

I don't know, to me it's stupid but the reasons you should get a wheel go so far beyond that. It's very hard to explain, if you get a DFGT, and get used to it, you'll never go back. I won't even buy racing games that don't have wheel support. I've tried but using a game pad is just so lacking.

Trust me, you'll be more happy with it than I can explain. It's the best entertainment investment I've ever made.

If you look around I'm sure you can find a rather cheap DFGT somewhere. So if you're concerned about money, go for it. If not, then go for the G27.

Edit: Just did a quick search, found it for 924 SEK (125 $ / 100 € / 80 £) including shipping costs. That's about half the price of the G27. On the other hand I see that Amazon has a pretty good price on the G27 right now: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NT9TK4/?tag=gtplanet-20

I have now bought a new G27 and am waiting for it to arrive tomorrow!

I'm now thinking about a seat and have seen the Playseat for £239. I'm so tempted to get the seat but really want to be sure it's worth it as a long term buy as it's costing me a lot of money!

Cheers :)

It is worth it. Otherwise you'll left the wheel unused since it takes quite a lot of space and effort to set it up every time.

Cheapest option is making a cockpit (plenty of plans on the interwebz) but that takes manual skills.

If you plan to buy one make sure it's the best for the price. For example stability matters quite a lot, and personally I think comfort is not a personal preference (leg room and not having a metal bar in the middle for example)

It may seem strange at first. But within a few weeks to a month, you'll be one happy sim racer! Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the G27 club! You'll never race with a pad again. Trust me!

I have a Driving Force Pro from GT4 which I still occasionally use for the 200° wheel axis feature. Then I found a DFGT on CL for $30 which was a big improvement in smoothness and feel, plus the RA button mappings are extremely handy. Then, a few months ago I found a G27 with a Wheel Stand Pro at a pawn shop for $150. This thing blows everything else I've tried out of the water. It's so smooth and best of all, QUIET! I highly recommend it.

Although, one thing I noticed was that I was posting better lap times in GTA 2012 with the DFGT. For some reason, I could maneuver a lot quicker and easier with the DFGT, and the FFB didn't seem to affect the 370z's handling characteristics as much as the G27. Just my .02, (and my first post).

G27 and wheelstand pro user for about 3 weeks, and its a simply a completely new experience.about the seat go to the Sim Racing Hardware forum, and read, there's a lot of information there.

Ok cool I'm nearly convinced to buy just gotta get it past the missus. I want to get into some racing clubs aswell on here. It'd be nice to get online and race in organised events rather than just random races :)

People always mention the DFGT and the G27, but what about the Fanatac wheels? Are they any good? I see they can also be used on x-box and they look nice, just wonder how they work.

How much money do you have to spend. <$300 G27. >$300... more like >$600 Fanatec CSRE/CSW.

I like to put it this way: Logitechs are toys, Fanatecs are machines. I used to have a DFGT and my CSR has so much more life in it. Definitely worth the money. 👍

The G27 is a great wheel for it's price range. I use a T500 and absolutely love it and would have a really hard time going back to anything less. It is pricey though. If you look at Playseat then get a GT over Evolution. I have a GT and I like it but really I wish I had an Obutto Ozone.
