Well, I've got a similar problem. I thought the 9 o'clock thing would work out for me but it has been a struggle. I do enjoy racing with you guys and would occasionally like to get into one of your spot races. At this point I'm going to have to pull out as well.

Sorry guys.

No worries and thanks for the heads up :). Hope to see you in future races, either here or elsewhere :)

We have a few spots open now. Please feel free to join in for the final 3 races. Post here if you have any questions or concerns :)

I would like to share some thoughts on the incident with BigNFL last Friday.

It is one thing to f'up, blow a chicane, and take someone out too.

What you DO NOT DO is drive off merrily as if nothing happened. You do not get to "create" passing opportunities that way.

If you take out another driver -- even if you are not entirely sure it was your fault -- slow up until the other driver recovers and is back on the road AHEAD of you.

And at the end of the race, when I passed BigNFL in lap 27, I was not particularly worried about leaving any wiggle room.

Big -- I put you in a bad spot, no doubt, but there was no infraction on my part. What comes around goes around - you are lucky I did not plant you into a guard rail.

Think twice before committing hit an runs.

I could go either way on that. It would have been nice if he slowed down, but I'm not making it required. I'd rather not people work stuff out during a race, with retaliations or otherwise lol.

I'll take care of things with appropriate penalties and that should be enough for most everything, but you said it was ok so I let it slide in this instance.

Bottom line, good guys don't finish last, and the wrongdoers will be punished lol (if you decide to report an incident)

There is a big space between "retaliation" (i.e., planting someone into a guard rail) and leaving someone no choice but to back off :)

All I am saying is if you expect to be given a wide birth, then you don't dive bomb people in a chicane and scurry along like it was nothing. Required or not, people remember whether you own up to your screw ups, and as I proved, they can make life difficult without even violating any regulations.

In many real world race situations (ex: grand am, alms, aussie super-car, etc.), if you commit an infraction you can sometimes avoid a penalty by making sure not to use it as a passing opportunity, and giving position back to whomever you offended. It is not required in real life either, but if you don't you may have to do a stop-and-go in the pits, potentially losing much more time than if you had waited.

The penalties need to be substantial enough, i.e., 20 to 40 seconds, to encourage folks to "do the right thing" on the track, so that no even one has to ask for an investigation. I would suggest a 20 second minimum penalty, and increase it in 10 second increments for more serious, i.e., intentional or multiple infractions, which is consistent with the effect of stop-and-go pit penalties.

Yeah, if he had given you back your position, I probably wouldn't have given a penalty (I didn't anyway but I think you know what I mean lol).

I talked about this before in an email but sometimes this causes more issues than it solves, and this is something I dislike even more than hit and runs.

For example, in a recent race on the weekend I was going around a hairpin and two cars had taken up two lanes of the track, basically blocking the road. One car was one that had gotten knocked off, and one was waiting for the other car to retake position. I had to come to a complete stop and now a problem that was between two cars was now my problem lol.

I wasn't aware you made it difficult for him. What did you do exactly lol

In regards to the penalties, yes, I can and will impose harsh penalties to every offense. Most extreme is probably taking away multiple grid positions. I do not like contact driving, forcing people off track etc.

Watch lap 37, about 2/3rds of the way down the back straight, as I was passing Big. I was already a good half car length ahead, when he realized I was not leaving any more room on the outside line, and when he realized, he swerved left, but there was no place to go. I held straight and true, but left him no choice but to back off and give way to me. I was already besting him by 15 seconds a lap at that point.

I would have left more room for just about anyone else, but I had no obligation to do so.

You have no obligation to do so for anyone else either hehe. That's just defending your position. But yeah, I know what you mean.

Well, you cannot make amends for being a nuisance to one driver by becoming a nuisance to everyone. Notice in my original post, I said "slowed up" not "stopped". He could have pulled along the pit wall on the straight and kept moving while waiting for me. There are many acceptable ways to handle it.

I don't doubt that, but I dislike the slowing down part still on the track lol. If anything, he should have just taken a pit penalty.

I feel if you're racing on the track, deliberately slowing down for any reason other than cornering or allowing space for a car that's beside you goes against that idea, no matter how good willed it is.

Personally, I think it's a matter best left up to the race officials to deal with.

Fair enough. The next question is whether you plan to enforce that preference, by further penalizing anyone who manages to compensate for incidents in an orderly fashion.

Without a strict rule, I for one will continue to handle it that way and will expect the same of others. I doubt I am alone in that view, again in large part because it is real life, and because one should not have to rat on others to get justice.

And while I want to keep officials happy, I am more worried about the collective view of my behavior from everyone on track.

No, I'm not gonna penalize people that want to deal with it themselves, unless the people involved cause another incident while in the process. When that happens, I unfortunately will have deal out penalties there lol.

It's just a personal preference. I'm just saying you don't have to deal with it while on the track. It's hard enough for myself to try to figure out where to break around people, but then if I also have to be on the lookout for slower cars, it's just more stress lol.

Use your best judgment, you guys are smart :)

Also for future reference, when you have problem with a player, it's best to pm the person. I know you were trying to illustrate a point and it led to good discussion, but I think that's frowned upon on GTP (calling out people with regards to an incident) lol

That is a good policy, and is intended to avoid the sort of bickering I found on the VW race from last night. My post was not intended to engage BigNFL in a debate, per se. I was sharing my position on the "topic", as opposed to a flame post to vent anger. And it is info that everyone should consider.

Regarding the first lap incident flat-out blew the braking point and knocked you off and for which I am sorry. I always try to give everyone one enough room on the track especially if they're "15 seconds a lap faster". As for the slowing down waiting for the driver you knocked off thing I didn't know that this was a rule in this series and am sorry for breaking it.

2 weather tracks added to the course list. I recommend you have comfort soft tires or something similar available if you don't like how the car handles in rain.

Full 10 course list will be available June 22nd.

Thanks for reading!
I'm so smart :ouch:

I was wondering why you were on sports tires in the replays :P

As for the slowing down thing Skyline, it's not a hard-fast rule, which is what I was discussing with Kirk.

Thanks for the follow-up Big. No hard feelings. Like I said, the intent was not to flame but to raise awareness of an attitude I thought was fairly well accepted. In fact, the GTPlanet Online Racing (OLR) Rules & Guidelines say...

07: Contact Concessions:

A:
If there’s contact between drivers that results in the guilty driver making up places on the innocent driver, the guilty driver should immediately allow the innocent driver to pass freely to re-establish their position. This rule should be observed, even if it means the guilty driver has to allow drivers not involved in the incident to pass while waiting for the driver they contacted.

As you can see with the exchange with alefin, there is a wide range of perspectives on that question, and on Sundays, we co-officiate. So how 'bout that!

Further complicating the matter, all of our Real Racing Sim posts, even mine, include the following exception to the GT Planet Online Racing Rules under Other Notes (originally drafted by alefin):

Keep moving on the track, regardless of incident, unless cars behind you are approaching. Time, depending on severity of incident, will be added to your final race time once complaints are filed and replays checked.

However, before this discussion, I never understood that to alefin "Keep moving on the track", means, "Keep racing." I interpretted it to be consistent with the GT Planet OLR Rule on Contact Concessions above. I thought alefin was trying to clarify that you should not stop on the track and block anyone. This again is why I used the language "slow up". I never imagined that he intended to eliminate 07: Contact Concessions entirely.

So, at this point I would have to say that alefin's view is not in line with the larger GT5 community, where most of the time, there are no racing officials to assess penalties and adjust race results.

But, you can decide for yourself. There is no requirement to stop, which means that anyone you offend has to file a complaint to see any justice done. So, you offend them once with a driving fault, and then put them in the awkward position of having to be a rat fink, instead of owning up to your own schnitty driving and giving up positions (concessions).

The problem is even worse for those without mics like you Big, because you can't even apologize until you pit or after the race, which is usually too late to help an offended driver avoid several angry laps. Only your actions reflect your remorse. Again, your choice.

Yes, that's what my keep moving on the track was for. I can understand the concession, but I don't like it as a strict rule. I'll change it to "keep racing" in future posts.

Changed #2 of changes to the OLR.

I suppose one could see it as being a rat fink lol, but I've seen so many incidents being reported in other series as well as a very specified step by step process to deal with incidents in the OLR that it seems normal to me. Perhaps that's a regrettable situation, but it's a reality that I'm accustomed to now.

From personal experience, I will allow a driver that I've hit to take my position, but if they don't it's no big deal to me since I know they'll be penalized later on heh

Heh heh. I like the revision al! It leaves no doubt... except the choice is still in your hands, Big. :)

My game black screened and froze. If anyone can post a replay, that would be great lol. Good race guys, and nice win Jess. It was close phil :P

Congrats to BRAD, phil and elmo for overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the series!

I hope you guys enjoyed it. Keep an eye out for some of our other races/series.
