Pre Season Interview - The 4 Champions
All 4 of TOCA's champions are on track for the first time ever for a full season. DK, winner of the first two TOCA championships in the TOCA-spec era, Season 3 champion and RWD master Sumo098 after a season-long break, Season 4's winner the controversial DaxCobra, and reigning champion Spurgy, We got them sat down and asked them a few questions ahead of Season 6... ~Questions by Furinkazen~
Well... all 4 champions in TOCA Season 6 together, thats a quarter of the field. Does that make you nervous at all or do you just treat each other on track as a normal driver?
DK:I think that I've become more cautious rather than nervous with regards to other drivers. I know I had a really bad reputation back in TOCA's infancy, especially considering Sassafrass's hissy fit after Madrid in S2. At the end of the day, these are touring cars, contact is inevitable in these cars.
Sumo:Nah, I just destroy everyone in my path.
Dax:I don't really put much thought into that stuff. I usually am thinking about other things whilst driving, such as making sure I turn on Carbonox's heated seats then break the switch off. Silly penguin doesn't know what to do.
Spurgy:Having 4 champions doesn't make me nervous about the coming season at all. I've raced them all before so I know what they are all capable of and what I need to do to beat them.
Talk us through your new TOCA Season 6 Teams & cars.
DK:The Volvo seems to be weak in low-speed corners, it just lights up its fronts until you hit 3rd gear. It has a lot more bite in a straight line, too. Also, don't look at me oddly when you spot the action figure of a red-and-white anime mech on the dashboard.
Sumo:I'm with Dax and our car is a red BMW. That's all that I really know and care about.
Dax:My new car and team or everyones? My new team has a great driver in it. And Sumo.
Spurgy:My last team mate, Gokartman, couldn't make all of the races this season due to lack of sponsorship which mean't that I had to find a new team. RPM was looking for a new driver and had some good consistent results last season with Furinkazen, so I think I made a good choice in joining them for S6. RPM are also running the same car I was using last season which is the Volvo C30, which means that I don't need to worry about making new setups for a different car, but instead I can just improve on the setups I already have.
Is there anyone this season you think is going to be a surprise? A "dark horse" so to speak?
DK:I think the Infinitis pose a threat, and when the FWDs are struggling with tyre wear in the later stages, they may claim a few scalps there.
Sumo:Dunno, guess we'll have to wait and see.
Dax:Furinkazen.
Spurgy:I don't think anyone is going to surprise us this season, almost all the drivers have done at least one season so we know where everyone roughly ranks, but who knows, anything could happen so we will have to wait and see..
Indianapolis returns to the TOCA calendar, and Suzuka's full layout makes it's debut, thoughts?
DK:I thought Suzuka East was a poor choice. Maybe that was because I lost 25 points due to bullcrap penalties, but there simply wasn't any room there. At least the full course has more chances for overtaking.
Sumo:Indy is a fun track and I really like Suzuka full.
Dax:Yeah, but none AUP-friendly.
Spurgy:I was happy to see that there are longer tracks this season, as they are more suited to my driving style and they also make overtaking easier. This should hopefully mean better results for both me and my team mate compared to the short tracks last season.
Tyre wear is back with a new tyre compound this season, thoughts?
DK:I think it is going to add an extra tactical edge to testing. Drivers will need to decide between outright pace over a single lap or an advantage in the final stages of the race when everyone's struggling with tyre wear.
Sumo:SLIPPERY DOO DA!
Dax:LOLWUT?! Since when? That's great news.
Spurgy:This does add a new element to the races, but I do feel that it is unnecessary, and could be quite frustrating.
When the season finale arrives at the Nurburgring in December, do you think the title will still be up for grabs?
DK:Depends on how many races Spurgy misses.
Sumo:Most likely yes. Not that I will have any trouble procuring it of course.
Dax:Sure, but only the constructors. I will have the Drivers championship wrapped up by round one.
Spurgy:I think it will be seeing as this season there are 4 races to finish off with which means that there will be a lot of points up for grabs, but you never know, depends how the start of the season goes.
Any final thoughts?
DK:Furi can't resist saying "3 WIDE!" when he's on the motorway.
Sumo:I have to say, it's good to be back after this somewhat unintentional hiatus of mine.
Dax:Neljack is going to finish 2nd.
Spurgy:Looking forward to this season, hoping to continue my good results and wins from last season, with my aim being to secure the Team and Driver's championship.
