It's that time in my life again where I am in the market for a new smart phone. Thanks to the new Android update, my old phone Droid2 is sluggish and buggy.

The question is do I upgrade to the new quad-core android phones that are out there or jump ship entirely and head on over to the iPhone5 platform?

Cost is not an issue, this will be a company supplied device.

Other concerns, I love my Google integration with this phone, from contacts, email, calendar, etc, all sync and keep me informed and up-to-date. I also need to hit my exchange server which shouldn't be an issue with either phone and their IMAP capabilities.

Thoughts?

I just got the 5 a week ago and my biggest complaint is the actual phone. It has to be the worst phone I have ever used. Everything else is great. Super fast more apps then you would ever need but actually using it for a phone is awful. If it so much as touches my shoulder it cuts out on people no matter how close to my mouth it is.

I'll never figure out why the phones just keep getting worse and worse. I have a friend with an atrix and his does it too. You would think as great as they make them you would still be able to actually use them as a phone without any problems.

Aside from the phone part though its great. I can't imagine it being much better.

definitely go for an iphone if cost is not an issue
there is not time to wait for any further update from android
4.0.1, 4.1.1, 4.2.0... lol
it will disturb me
each manufacturer for android system has its own update plans
e.g you bought shazham or whatever apps in the market and latest update from it require latest os update
it did to me for shazham , i have 5.1.1 on ios and i need 6.0 (can update at anytime) at least in order to get it updated
iphone, easy to use, one model in the whole range, one interface...

All I've found it comes down to is personal preference as most of the top end phones these days all do the same things, give or take one or two more unusual features. What will really get you sold on a handset is the feel of it in your hand. The Samsung Galaxy SIII and Note II for example are both fantastic phones that are more than capable to handle whatever you throw at them but the build quality is a real let down for me as I felt the plastic felt cheap compared to other phones on the market, such as the equally capable HTC One X+ with its polycarbonate unibody design. Thats the android side as far as I'm concerned as to what you'd need to decide on.

The iPhone however has probably the best design for a phone of anything on the market today. The difference then lies with the OS and what you prefer. Would you like to tweak what you see more through widgets and such or does that not bother you?

A good website I've found for looking at and comparing phones is GSM Arena which may help you with their objective reviews and spec sheets on all the current and upcoming handsets. 👍

agreed
iphone has the best design, app store, easy to use and ios update and one model only
android has a plenty of great phones such as SGIII, Note, HTC, Sony Ericsson...
more tweak settings, android market is almost as full as app store, you will find any app from both market, dont worry about it
however, google still doesnt manage to unify whole android system, there are a ton of phones that dont have received any further update yet and their owners are still waiting for...
if u want an advice, if you dont look for that much about performances, choose 4S over 5, 5 doesnt worth it
from android, GSIII met with universal approval
these both phones cost around 350-450$

Have you thought about the Google Nexus 4? All of the quad core goodness with none of the bloatware nonsense!

really? damn :(

There's also the Galaxy Note II which I hear is a pretty good phone.

Yup, i've had my Note II for 2 months now, and it's the best phone i've ever had.

I had the One X (which was really one of the best phones), but then the Note II came out and I just fell in love at first sight.

It's also alot better than the SIII and I also think it looks 100 times better.

More plus sides with it is the battery which just blows your mind when you've used it for a while.
Using the phone for calling, sending text messages, surfing the web, taking pictures/videos, and it still lasts 4-5 days with no trouble.
Hell, if you turn of the 3G network when you're not using it, it'll last more than 2 weeks. :dopey:

The camera is excellent, the pen is greatly improved from the Note I, and you get all the features available on a Samsung phone.

Even the touch screen is very smooth and can withstand some beating without getting any scratches.

Only downside with it is that it looks real ugly in grey colour. But it looks beautiful in white though. :D

Personally, I love my RAZR. My wife, on the other hand, hates it but loves her iPhone. While I've used her phone here and there (more so the iPad and touch, however) I'm still quite glad I have my Droid. It syncs perfectly with my gmail (duh! :P) and work emails so when I'm out of the office I can still address anything that needs to be taken care of. While I'm sure all that is equally as doable on the iPhone, I'm not recalling anyone who isn't using some form of Android phone.

Thanks for the comments guys. Basically you were all no help at all.

Just kidding of course. I am still undecided, but I am comforted to see a Google Sync app for the iPhone.

I have been on the android since the beginning, it may be time for a change, something new, something different. I am getting rather irritated with the docking and rotating (or lack there of) of the screen. Just for that reason, I may try the iPhone this time around.

I really like iOS and I find it better to use in many ways than the Android system. I find there's so much useless stuff crammed onto Android it makes it clunky to use at time. Plus I pretty much hate every Android phone I've used since they are all the size of a house. Size is actually my biggest complaint about the iPhone5, it's too big, I want a phone, not a TV in my pocket.

When it comes down to it though the iPhone and Android phones can both do probably 95% of the same stuff so it's going to be which one feels better to use for you.

If you do get an iPhone I doubt you'll be disappointed and as of a couple days ago you can now get Google Maps on iOS again, so the biggest complaint of iOS, Apple Maps, can now be done away with.

I will be getting my Htc one x + at christmas so I can tell u what I think of it then. I briefly had a htc one x and that was very good for the few days I had it, very very fast.

I wouldn't go for an iphone simply because of the price, its significantly more than the android equivilents which argueably are better.

Google nexus 4 is getting brilliant reviews and is pretty cheap. As is the LG Optimus 4x.

I just moved to iPhone after being on android and other tosh for the whole other rest of my phone using life. Difference? Everything is easier. Faster. Smoother. Nothing crashes. Everything worx. Initially I didn't enjoy the transition as it was all alien to me and I couldn't get the iphone5 to do what I wanted in terms of personalisation. But then I remembered the adage "there's an app for that" and now it has my wallpaper, ringtones, text alerts, photo contacts and The Dark Knight Rises on it for when I get bored at work. Once you've worked out that there is a way to do everything that you wanted to, you just have to double tap or swipe or shake to find the option (or open the App Store), then your confidence grows in the OS and you feel much more comfortable with your choice.
iPhone is worth it for IMessage alone IMO.

Good luck.
This is only the second post I've ever attempted on a phone btw. How illiterate I was.........

:irked:👍

Quite the opposite for me. Android has been 99% stable(only problem I ever had was the browser quitting on me and that's a rare occurrence. Like once every full moon or basically once a month or even longer. Basically not a problem). I own a Galaxy Nexus and it's very nice. Has one of the larger screens but not quite the largest at 4.65" and has 720P resolution to make those icons look nice. Some Android phones I feel the interface is too clunky(Such as HTC) but not on mine. It's pretty simple and to the point. It only takes a few hours to get used to it at first and I love swiping the apps off when I don't use them to save battery life. The worst battery life that I've gotten on this phone is 8 hours. The best battery life through light use(some web browser and some calls) would last a day and a half to two full days without recharging.

Android is big. You just have to find what you like.

Well, ordered the iPhone 5 today. Not sure what flavor I'll be getting....probably the 16g version. It's free so who's complaining right? The reason for going this route was simply to try something different. Sometimes I just want the phone to work. Maybe I'm just being picky or the Verizon installments of the Android software causes more problems then it's worth, but when I hit a button, I want it to just do what it's suppose to do. We'll see, I may absolutely hate the iPhone. This is really my first Apple product besides an old G4 tower I've had for over a decade in the recording studio (which has never failed, crashed, or locked up!).

I do appreciate the comments above, but as most have pointed out, it really comes down to personal preference.

Somehow missed this thread.

As you say Pako it simply comes down to personal preference.

Personally I wouldn't get an iPhone for a few reasons, a couple being.
#1 I don't want iTunes on my PC, see here for a bit of a reason why. (sorry non premo members)
#2 Until I can drag and drop my FLAC files onto an iPhone and play them out of the box without iTunes that is a major sticking point for me.

I'm not an Apple hater (really ) nor an Android fanboy, just that one meets my personal preferences and the other doesn't, honestly I don't even know if I can do that with an iPhone now and will only find out when I update my current handset in the future.

Isn't Verizon the US equivalent of Vodaphone?
If so, yeah their bloatware is horrible. So much so that years ago I rooted my Galaxy just to get rid of it.

Anyway personal preferences man. 👍
I'm sure the iPhone will do everything you need, enjoy.

Merry Christmas mate.
Cheers Shaun.

This.

iTunes just kills the idea of the iPhone for me, I love the flexibility of Android over iOS as well.

There's enough employees that could use it if I absolutely hate it. My droid has been great for everything except a phone. Man it has been so frustrating lately. Main reason for jumping ship.

iTunes? What? Dang, forgot about the mandatory delivery system. I hate iTunes but have gotten more intimate with it than I would admit with my wife and her iPad.

I do appreciate both of your guy's opinions. Just 14 hours too late! :D

Agreed I tunes is a major reason I never wanted a I phone.

Plus android just fits my needs so well.

Ok so.... Just got my iPhone 5 today. It's black and only the 16gb version. Again, this was a company phone purchased for me so who's complaining about a free phone right?

First off, the screen looked to be smaller than my droid but this is deceiving as it is actually the same width but longer. It is also quite a bit thinner. You can read about all the design blah blah blah, what ever. It's a nice phone.

It came pre-charged, to 80%. That was nice of them. It took about 2 minutes to sync all my google contacts, calendar, email, and notifications using a "New Exchange Account" option. It's all there, all of it. My fear was loosing this data or having to do a hard data transfer, not the case.

It also took another couple minutes to setup my corporate exchange server for all of their sync options, email, contacts, calendar, and reminders. Worked without flaw.

I read a lot of emails on my phone, actually most of my email time anymore is on the phone. As of late, spreadsheet or word attachments would almost stall out my dual core droid. This phone opens them up without hesitation. It's fast, responsive, and easy to read (if you zoom in).

The screen is also nice and bright with what seems like very good color. Display animations are silky smooth. I don't have a lot of apps downloaded, but with my gmail, corporate exchange, and Spotify and GTPlanet app installed, I feel back at home with all the functionality I had on my droid but everything just runs a lot faster and smoother. I hope it's not just the newness of it all and am able to continue to feel this way about the phone 6-12 months down the road.

Tonight will be time to accessorize it. Battery pack and car mount are the two main accessories that I am looking for tonight, maybe a couple extra charging cables as none of my wife's standard ipod cables will work because of the new lightning interface.

Oh and verizon's 4gLTE network shows speedtest results of 32.37mbps down and 2.69 Mbps up. Not too shabby for living in the sticks and is still on par with my android device.

Still think you should have gone with the Note II. :sly:

But congrats on the new phone.

Thanks!

I checked out the Note II. For a cell phone, it's the size of a small aircraft carrier! :D On that note, (no pun intended), my next phone in a year or two will likely be something like the Note II. The larger real estate would make my fat fingers happier, but would block my line of site when I had it in a navigation dock on the windshield. :)

Im definetly getting that. :sly:
