Since there has been a lot of discussion arround the GTPLANET forums according to GRID I would like to make a poll for Codemasters.

I think a lot of us gamers remember the good old TOCA and TOCA2 game. The latter had Tiff Needell as commentor.

The games captured in a great way what was racing all about. Qualifying, Pitsstops, Racing in the great BTCC championships.

We want TOCA back, is probably a nice statement.

So tell us of you want a remake which captures the essense of door to doorhandle racing!

I’ll simply re-quote myself, since this is a more suitable thread:

Both TOCA 1 and 2 were two of the most enjoyable games of my childhood (including the GT's). Handling in TOCA Touring cars 1 was more challenging then the handling in TOCA 2. Championship mode was very tough, as you needed a good qualifying position to stay away from the Nissan drivers, who were often the ones which caused all accidents. Maybe they just hated our Volvo S40 team. Like Stotty said, one wrong move with the throttle or one wide corner, and you can forget about a race podium. Only if it were a long race, you'd be able to regain your old position.

TOCA 2 was even more enjoyable, with Improved damage (front quarter-panels rubbing against tyres, hoods flinging opening whilst travelling at 200km/h, bumpers hanging off etc.), better graphics, and lots of unlockables. Great Stuff. 👍 Too bad my game freezes on the first loading screen after the intro.

The third game was also fun, but seemed a little soft compared to the other two. The graphics seemed toned down, the handling was more arcadish... and I think there was a few TOCA teams missing. By memory, Audi and Peugeot disappeared from the pack.

Then codemasters went downhill from there. We really need a return of how codemasters use to be... Back in the days when I respected them.

It seems apparent to me that the major reason as to why people dislike GRID is because they're approaching it as they would a simulator such as GT when it's really an arcade game on crack cocaine and body piercings.

Oh yesss please, the physics where awsome and I loved that Vovo !
Remix of Toca 1&2 with PS3 graphics and online mode... *dream*
I can't find my old copies, dang!
Good times :)

I would love a proper touring car game again, with a number of years worth of cars. As I mentioned in the RD GRID vs. GT5 thread though, I reckon that SimBin, who make RACE for the PC, are better suited nowadays.

EDIT: I've just found TOCA 2 on PC in my wardrobe! I knew I had it somewhere... this is going straight on my PC :D

those games are best toca games EVER!
and if codemasters want to remake of them I belive they will do another crap games just like they have done with GRID. they simply lost their simulation logic.

NO. We were given to expect this was going to be a great RACING game in the order of TOCA and other fine products from Codemaster. WE are DISAPPOINTED. It doesn't come close. It is a dismal failure as if it were brought to market WAY too early - it fills unfinished and UNPOLISHED. What happened at Codemaster between TOCA, 2, and 3 and now? What happened at Codemaster between Colin McCrae World Ralley and DiRT? Somewhere in there is a good product. I enjoy DiRT, but it still comes nowhere the kind of driving and fun of the rally series.

They just missed the mark. Period.

Oh. I still have my PS2, GT1, 2, 3, and 4 plus the entire TOCA series and Golin McCrae Rally. I enjoy them all. I long for the same or better for PS3. Please pay attention Codemaster.

What happened? McRae died. Kind of make you lose perspective when the man you have siged to one of the world's best-known rally franchises - quite possibly the game that brought rallying to levels of popularity in the late-90s to early-00s - dies.

Also, most thread I see around here are comparing GRID to GT5. You say they've put out an average product, but it's kind of hard for the not to when everyone is comparing an arcade game to a simulator; the simulator will win hands-down every time unless it's a particularly bad one.

I always liked Jarett and Labonte Stock car racing, which was a really fun PS exclusive version of TOCA. Play essentially the same, but is much better than the PS ports of TOCA.

I've not heard of that, was it a game based on an American series using the TOCA game engine?

EDIT: Actually I've just seen on gamespot, it's what TOCA World Touring Cars was called in the States, presumably. It was the last PS TOCA game, and featured a much wider array of cars, kind of like a middle ground between TOCA and Race Driver. Much better than any of the Race Driver games though, but not as good as TOCA 2.

It was a lot more accessible than the first two TOCA games because the handling was less knife-edge, but it was still pretty realistic and definitely very good fun.

@ doblocruiser, fantastic video! Probably the most exciting touring car race I've ever seen, and it's up against some stiff competition. I have the full 98 season on a VHS - BTCC from 1993 to 1998 really was unbeatable for racing. I'm glad the BTCC is finally getting to that stage again, with so many potential champions, loads of race winners and a full grid again.

They definitely need to remake it, haven't seen those screenshots for ages.

I've posted a link to this on the GRID forums, so hopefully they'll take notice. The developers and such do post on there regularly, I think that maybe they'll have a look at it :D

McRae died AFTER Dirt was designed, developed and released (Dirt was released in the UK in June '07, McRae died on the 15th Sept 2007). So that kind of falls flat as a reason why the McRae series went downhill in a big way.

The only CM racing title released since McRae's death has been Grid, which has evolved from the TOCA series, a series that McRae had no involvement in at all.

I remember when those Toca 2 graphics were just, wow, omg you had never seen anything like it before, it was revolutionary! Now it looks like dog poo:P

But I agree to a remake, I just disagree to which one, remake ToCa WTC just have the BTCC in it in place of the british championship, best of both worlds:P.

I decided to take a look at that forum just then, to see the fan's feedback for Grid. One comment in particular made me laugh:
Game Engine:
Beautiful in most regards, sleek and very quick. Physics and handling are top-notch. The car feels like it's actually on the track and not floating above it like a hovercraft.
No... Just, no. I honestly cannot believe someone could make a comment like that.

Thanks for the images, and the brilliant video of Mansell in '98. Great memories 👍. I noticed the grid positions from the pictures were quite different from what I remember. In TOCA 1, it was usually Renault in 1st (who won pretty much EVERY race), Audi 2nd, Honda 3rd, then Volvo, Nissan, Vauxhall, Ford and Peugeot. TOCA 2 had a more random grid order... but I never remember a Ford at the front of the pack... ever.
