What it is: The guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 decided that having their show canceled was not reason enough to stop making fun of movies. So, they decided to create MP3 files of them riffing on movies. The bonus to this is that since they aren't actually showing the movies, they don't have to license them. That means they can riff on anything they want. You provide the movie yourself. So, now they do this for big Hollywood films.

So, you basically download the file, pop in your movie and play the MP3 on a secondary set of speakers, syncing it up with instructions on the file. It occasionally speaks a line from the movie to help you stay in sync. It also includes a Read Me file with time stamps for each movie chapter.

You can also download their free syncing software for your PC to sync the DVD and Riff Trax together for you.

And now you have Mike J Nelson, Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo), and Bill Corbett (Crow) riffing on your favorite movies. Occasionally special guest stars pop in, like Weird Al Yankovic and Neil Patrick Harris.

I had a friend suggest it to me when he found out that I liked MST3K. I bought four to start with:
  • Transformers
  • Spiderman 3
  • Cloverfield
  • X-Men

What it costs: The cost ranges from $0.99 for Shorts (Drug use videos, etc.) to $1.99-$3.99 for movies (depending on movie length and popularity) and as much as $9.99 for VOD with the movie (usually old MST3K style movies).

How long have you owned/used it: I watched all four of the movies I listed above.

Pros:
  • It makes a bad movie funny. I thought that Transformers was not done very well as a movie, but add the Riff Trax and I was laughing almost non-stop.
  • Also, the file sizes are relatively small for a 2 hour file (less than 100MB for a 2+ hour movie), but the audio quality is exceptional. Between comments it is very, very quiet. The dialogue is crystal clear and there is no background noise, except what is intentional.
  • Works extremely well using my remote control Boss SoundDock for iPod alongside my PS3.
  • As they are not playing their MST3K characters they are more free to talk back and forth in a more natural way.

Cons:
  • It isn't MST3K. I know I gave their freedom as a pro, but without a full compliment of writing staff some of the jokes fall flat, and more obscure references are missed. An example would be Cloverfield; half the movie was jokes making fun of young hipsters that say, "Dude" a lot. There was a lot of room for a wider variety of jokes, but they were caught on making after-party comments.
  • It is not compatible with any kind of extended version. They have the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I have the extended versions on DVD. Problem is: Geeks, like myself, enjoyed MST3K and geeks, like myself, buy extended versions of movies. This could just be a geek complaint though. I know some people have multiple versions of movies, so...
  • The MP3 seems to get slightly ahead of the movie. In a two hour movie I think the end result is off by about a second and a half. It isn't a big deal, especially since a quick pause-unpause action on the remote will fix it, and they give you multiple opportunities to notice and fix it throughout the movie. The VOD or RiffTrax Player are options but the VOD choices are very limited in selection and their player requires sitting in front of a PC. That isn't great for everyone.
  • Same kind of con: It isn't convenient for anyone without a second speaker system to output their MP3 player on near their TV/DVD Player. Again the RiffTrax Player is an option, but only if you don't mind sitting in front of your PC.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Conclusion: This is not exactly convenient or easy to use for everyone. That said, if you want to relive your MST3K experience with big Hollywood films this is the way to do it.

If you don't mind watching a movie on your computer monitor or you have a setup that will allow you to play two audio sources at the same time it is very good.

The guys are still funny, even if the talent pool has been thinned out a bit. I'd give it a 9.5/10 if they had an automated way to get this on your TV synced up. I don't blame them for that as this is probably the best way to do it without having to actually license the films.

I'd give them the final half a point if they had the full writing staff from the show so that they wouldn't occasionally drag at moments or beat a joke to death.

Seriously... it's two guys that just "commentate" while the movie runs? They aren't even funny. wow... FAIL.

People pay money to them...?

You never watched Mystery Science Theater 3000, did you?

Well, you call it fail....This is the same group that did this exact same thing on MST3K. The only difference was they showed the movie and had their silhouettes shown at the bottom of the frame in front of the film.

If the premise of a TV show that ran for 11 years and had a feature film is a FAIL to you then I think that you are missing something.

But then some people never did get it. To each their own I guess.

I can sit there and commentary while entertaining myself... I didn't miss anything. : shrugs:

Oh... These guys... yeah not missing anything.

It has a huge cult following,, If you didn't get the show you wouldn't get Riff Trax, but believe me, it is far from fail.

I'm waiting for Diego (Tom Servo) to tell you how much you really are missing.

he he, I hadn't seen the thread.

I'll be the first to say MST3K and RffTx is a cult type of show. This means that you basically either get it or you don't. If you get it, it's one of the most amazing shows ever, but if you don't, you just don't.

Secondly, if you're just trying to tell someone what the show is about, it's not appealing at all... let's face it, rthe whole premise of "three guys makig fun of bad movies" has as much DIY into it as a boring night at home with a couple of friends.

To me MST3K was a lot of fun when I watched it the first few times, in college on Sci-Fi... but I often got lost whenever they made fun of the movies they did in the original series. They played around with b-movies from the 50s, 60s and 70s, which no one had heard of before. And just made fun of the cheesiness of ot all.

RffTx is everything we all wished MST3K was... meaning it's the same MST3K style but with newer movies, and movies we've probably already heard of and weren't necessarily bad. Again, it's something you either like or you don't. It's hard to make you like it if you're already predisposed not to like it.

So far, from RffTx I've only seen Dark Water, though I have a few in line:

  • Eragon
  • Batman & Robin
  • Nestor: The Long Eared Christmas Donkey
  • Cloverfield
  • Glitter (saw the first few minutes and it was amazing)
  • Aeon Flux
  • Battlefield Earth
  • Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
  • Terminator 3
  • Daredevil
  • Jurassic Park
  • Plan 9 From Outer Space
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Over the Top
  • X-Men
  • Star Trek V
  • Star Trek VI
  • Star Trek VII
  • Star Wars I-III
  • Star Wars Holiday Special
  • Transformers
  • Top Gun
  • The House on Haunted Hill
  • Ocean's 11
  • Predator
  • Spiderman 3
  • The Three Stooges: Swing Parade
  • Heroes (the TV Series)
  • Memento
  • Lord of the Rings I

Dark Water was riffed by Matthew J Elliott, whom I'd never heard of before. He was pretty funny, but more so in the 2nd half of the movie.

My only issue with Riff Trax so far is that some movies, like Battlefield Earth, are perfect Riffing material, but I don't want to waste rental time/money on them.

I was thinking about that when I got Glitter... who's going to spend the money to buy this crap movie only to have it riff'd.

It would be awesome if they could set them up as a VOD if the licensing wasn't too expensive.

I've just finished watching Star Wars: Episode I with the Riff'd track and I have to say it's great. Nonsurprisingly, Jar jar is the main flamed character, to the point that you actually look forward to his/its lines to see what they'll come up.

Jar Jar: Miss-a say
Riff: You shut the hell up!

The riff is done by Mike Nelson & Kevin Murphy, giving it a real MST3K original sound.

Oh yeah, all the best ones are done with Mike, Kevin, and/or Bill. I am tempted to get the Jurassic Park with Weird Al.

So you're one of those annoying kids who sit in the back talking over the whole movie... I reaaaallyl hate you!

I only do that to drown out the other submorons, and only in whispers. If you knew anything about me, you'd know I hold movie theatre etiquette in the highest regard; I once dumped a girl the day after going to see The Two Towers with her and her sister the night before. The two of them could not shut up for five consecutive minutes, and had no idea how to whisper. I understand your hatred for the theatre gabbers, but I sir am the farthest from one of those!

And of course I only do it during bad movies.

I also enjoy making fun of the teeny-boppers and prostitots and punko lame-os as they enter the theatre before the picture starts. That's good fun too!

Just finished watching the Terminator 3, riffed by Kevin Murphy and Mike Nelson... too bad the movie is so boring, though. First half of the movie is amazing, second half is good, though not as good as the first. Then again, the first half has more awkward moments...

I'll rate it a 4/5

Now that I have the first six Star Trek movies on Blu-Ray I will definitely have to listen to V and VI riffed. I wish they would do the rest of them.

I'll be getting Generations after that comes out on Blu-Ray and will definitely give it a go too.

Ah, MST3K my favorite show ever. Watching it now actually. But has anyone seen this yet, the Rifftrax Movie. I seems like its only one night but I'm sure its funny. I wish the Rifftrax weren't in those MP3 formats, I wish it was a movie like MST3K.

Yes. They email me reminders about once a week. It isn't a movie, just them Riffing on Plan 9 from Outer Space live.

I seems like its only one night but I'm sure its funny.
Or you could purchase one of the multiple VOD versions they have recorded.

If they actually showed the movie they wouldn't be able to do the movies they do. The whole purpose behind Riff Trax is that it is just an audio file of them being silly, in perfect timing with a specific movie. Because they are not actually showing any movie they don't have to get permission or pay for licensing. If they did they would still just be doing old crappy films. The beauty of Riff Trax is that they can do modern films, which allows the audience to be able to enjoy the MST3K atmosphere with newer popular films.

Plus, if they were just putting more MST3K video episodes online (and somehow managed to license new films) then you would have to pay prices higher than the rental fee of that movie.

Twilight (Three-Riffers) - (Movie: Kill it now/10) (Riff: 9/10)
OK, so this movie was just so bad that I was even starting to riff it on my own. In fact, in a scene where Edward is standing next to his Volvo C30 I made some comment about looking awesome with his chick car. The Riffers say, "It is hard to look bad ass standing next to a Volvo." Yes, it is that easy to riff, which means this riff is made of pure gold. Long awkward silences throughout the film? That calls for a "Line please." And don't think the appearing and disappearing stuffed armadillo in the biology class scenes gets off without notice. But I think the whole thing can be summed up with one sentence, "A pee wee football team scores faster than this guy."

👍

Side Note: I know this thread is mainly just myself and Tom Servo, but should this get moved to the Movies & TV forum? At this point we are discussing the riffed movies. I think I can do it myself, being premium and awesome like that.

Is Twilight that vampire movie? Love your points-based review., I'll probably use one of those for the next crap movie I watch.

Is Twilight that vampire movie?
That is an understatement that makes it obvious you aren't in the US. Twilight is the movie based on the book that has become the phenomenon causing teenage girls to wish they could meet a vampire because they believe that the vampire will romance them, not to get close enough to drink their blood, but out of love.

God, that was hard to type.

Let me put it this way:
Vampires -> Romance -> No blood sucking -> No normal teenage guys are getting any now.

Sweet man, I just saw an advertisement on the top of a couple pages about the MST3K 20th Anniversary edition!

Does anyone know if MST3K is going to come back?

Most probably not...

Thanks FK... I never thought I'd be able to get it if not for that explanation. Just makes me want to watch it (with the Riff) all the more.

I knew nothing about the story other than the fact that it was a teen vampire romance (I can't keep a straight face) and without the Riff it was bad enough to be funny. When you see the biggest change to vampire lore (I am not revealing this because seeing it unaware is what had me laughing) you can't help but laugh at the absurdity of it.

If you watch it with the Riff first the intro will actually spoil that part.
