Well, I can finally type with two hands, I have been hunt and peck with just my right hand for almost two weeks now.

Three weeks ago, I was at a buddies bachelor party and was tubing behind a boat with two other guys on a three man tube. I was on the outside of the turn and was impressed with how long I was holding the tube upright until I could hold on no long - *CRASH*. While I was bobbing in the water, my left arm really hurt but the cold water felt good on it. I got back on the tube for round two and couldn't even hold on and crashed quickly. For the next three days I kept my arm in my sweat shirt pocket for a make-shift sling. A week went by with some discomfort but nothing serious, although I did notice some "extra" ligament type of material when I felt the inside pocket of my elbow, just below the bicep. After being a week off from working out, I went to the gym and benched 315 for 4 reps with little pain with the thought that I must have just sprained my left arm just 5 days before. Went into the gym on Tuesday and couldn't even curl a 20lb dumb bell. That afternoon, my wife made me make an appointment to get a MRI done on it. Wednesday afternoon the doctor explained that the squiggly line he was showing should actually be straight and that the end that wasn't connected should have been connected 2cm north west. :D

I had two choice, leave it be and loose 40-60% of my strength or go under the knife to reattached the lower bicep tendon. I opted for surgery. The pictures below are from last Friday, 8 days after the surgery.

The doc said the surgery went well and the repair went good. He expect a full recovery with being able to do all the things I did before. If anything, he said my right arm will blow out before my left will again. :nervous:

I will be in the Stryper cast for 3 weeks then I will be working on arm mobility with limited range of motion which will continue for another 5 months of physical therapy.

So....the moral of the story is LET GO OF THE DAMN TUBE SOONER! ;)

Or how about this truth I realized, "When your grip strength is stronger than your tensile strength, it time to put the damn weight down and hit the treadmill".

What shall we call this one? Meat Tuck? Meat Zipper?

 I thought about resurrecting the ole meat phlap thread, but opted to save the unpleasantries to the newbee's. :D

I have to say, one of the biggest let down's of this whole thing was not making it to our RTR gig:

I could actually play my bass before the surgery, there is no way I can play for atleast another 6 weeks or so.

Wow, sorry to hear you couldn't make your gig. I know it's the big one you love attending.

Good luck with your recovery.

Now, what shall we call this adventure? Meat Stitch has a nice ring to it.

There will be other gig's in the sky.

Meat Stitch is nice.... :D

Sheesh... That looks incredibly painful. Glad to hear that all is going well in the recovery department.

For being an IT geek, you sure do come up with some memorable injuries.

 I'm sure carpal tunnel will be next on the list, or some massive stapler accident.

My grandfather has the same injury. Only difference is that the doctor didn't want to perform the operation. He claimed it wouldn't heal after the operation. Even if he was only 30 he wouldn't have performed the operation. What a load of ****.
He claimed the strength would come back to more than 95%, but that's obviously not true.
He still has some "extra" ligament type of material in his elbow's inside.
Too bad suing the guy takes so much effort, time and money.

But hope that your arm heals fast, so that you can grow some more muscle :)

So was this one of those surgeries where they tie it to what can only be described as a drywall screw, in your bone, or were they able to connect it in a more natural way?

I have only known people with tendon damage, so I don't know much about ligament repairs.

You know, I'm not exactly sure what they used although I know he said there would be no metal screws in my arm. Good for airport security I suppose.

They probably were able to just stitch it into place so it can heal back naturally then. I'm guessing that will be better than the screws for rotator cuffs and similar things that never quite feel right again.

Good luck in your recovery. Is there any prediction on how much it will set you back on your weight training?

Oh, and listen to your doctor and any rehab folks you have to deal with. I don't want to see you talking about having it redone in three months.

Apparently you really don't know your own strength. You're so strong you tore your own tendon!

In that case... how good is he wielding a banhammer?

How we have forgotten our Norse Mod mythology. The ban hammer gives the mod their power, meaning that any can lift and use it as if it were a mere stick. But if any mere mortal were to attempt to pick it up they would find it weighs as much as the Earth itself.

Pako's probably the only mod who can use the banhammer with one arm.
No, Pako is the only Mod who actually scares the Ban Hammer itself.

If Pako were to glare too hard at it, It would swing itself.

One week down, 2 more to go in this cast. They said I could go in and do cardio and legs but had reservations because I would sweat in the cast. Not fun. I had to sling some boxes of paper around and in about 10 minutes with the slightest sweat, my arm was itching like no other. So working out is not an option for at least two more weeks.

I'm getting an idea what my future holds if I stop working out and it's not pretty. Can anyone say "saggy"? Remember the Senator on X-men? Oh yes, lots of extra skin and sag. Can't wait to get back into the gym.

That's just a brutal image.

Hey if you did a cut phase, it'd not be saggy ;) :D

Glad to hear that you're managing through the mental anguish.

Just a little update, I get the cast cut off in 5 days and 65 minutes from now. :D

Happy happy, joy joy!

You know it's bad when you're counting the minutes from almost a week away!

Hang in there, Pako!

That would be nice, but no. I had a buddy, however, that was in a wheelchair that would allow us to road hunt behind certain gated roads.... There were some nice bucks back there. :)

Awesome. What has it been like with that damn thing on? What things couldn't you do or what things did you have to do different.

If if you had to do anything different, it's going to be very weird to have that cast off. Holding Micah is going to be different, I bet.

Oh man, I have haven't had a decent shower in almost 4 weeks. I've been able to type with both hand for a couple weeks now, but that was a new development. Haven't worked out or played my bass since the surgery. I did play some lap metal over hand style at my brother's birthday on Sunday, that was interesting. I just want to be able to take a proper shower, play my bass, and workout again. UGH...

:)

Dang your arms are so big your own body cant even hold onto them. Is the cast made out of tow strap material? haha
Sorry to hear about the accident. How much strenght will you be able to get back after the surgery heals up??
Back when I used to lift I avoided any activites that could involve accidents. After all the hard work in the gym, the last thing I wanted to happen would be something that could prevent mass building.

^

Added 4 new pics on the first page. Looks like I'll be wearing a Bledsoe Arm Brace for a while. Right now my range of motion is limited to 30 thru 60 degrees. I start therapy tomorrow and will see if I need to go 2 or 3 times a week. I have learned a lot from this little experience. Next time I will be driving the boat. :)
