You're Funny
I'm of course asking this question for myself but also for everyone else who hasn't gotten the game yet.

EA's reputation has disintegrated for me these past few years. First Underground disappointed me a little, I got Underground 2 and that wasn't much of an improvement, Most Wanted was a little better, Carbon was more of the same, but ProStreet was the one that killed it for me. I didn't buy Undercover because I was thinking it was going to be more of the same.

But here we are with Shift, I recently found it at Wal-Mart at about $45, and I've been hearing how it's been a great game, most prominently from fellow Gran Turismo fans (Lord knows where I could've found those). I've heard positive reviews and I'm considering it...

All I want to know is, should I buy it???

I've been wondering the same thing...

My main question is, apart from the awesome sounds, what will keep me coming back?

I like the game, but using a control, after tuning a tier 2 RWD car, it becomes almost unplayable, plus i cant map the controls how i like.

These 2 things alone are almost making me return the game.

I managed the Viper and Zonda just fine with all the physics set to their most difficult, and the AI difficulty maxed. The only aid I used was anti-lock brakes, this is of course on the demo. It felt a little odd though, and the Zonda bounced around ALOT on the first turn on Spa which kept dampening my experience.

As for me, I just rented the game... I want my $7 back! some parts of the game are good, like the main menu, which is the coolest thing in the game, and I like the points system and the HUD. The drifting is horrible, the mechanical way of basic drifting in video games you guys know, but when it comes to shift something is just different about it. Even if you are driving straight and the wheel moves a tiny bit the back end kicks out and starts your drift. When you try to counter the drift like you normally would, it just basically goes south. Theres just no feel for the momentum. The sounds are so-so, not Gran Turismo material, but ok. And they said that they tried to make it more like a simulation racer, but it's still Need For Speed, that's all I have to say.

I still play Shift, and find it enjoyable. Some of the cars do get ridiculously hard to handle when you reach the higher tiers but the lower tiers of cars do really give some fantastic racing. The online is good, but there are a lot of punters, especially in the driver duel challenges. Even if you are racing someone you know is clean, the racing will not be as close as GT5P's due to the boucing of the faster cars which could end in a serious crash if you get too close! But as I said before, the slower cars may be able to satisfy a close and enjoyable race.

The reward system is a really good feature of the game IMO. The ability to level up impressed me. As does the badges, which reward you for your achievements online, in the career, or just doing something simple as overtaking cleanly.

Overall, I reckon Shift is definitely no where near the high quality standard of Gran Turismo, but it will certainly fill that gap until GT5's release.

The physics in general aren't bad, and so you can have rewarding drives.

For me, it has the Nurburgring...... 👍

It's worth buying for the GT3RS/GT2 and the 'Ring alone.

I'm also finding more depth to it by trying to master every corner on every track... sort of like license tests in the GT series.

Agreed, I find mastering the corners a challenging task. It's the only reason I actually leave the racing line on. All I need to do is master two of the Ring variations and the whole thing itself then I've mastered every corner in the game... :D

Ah, life is good... Bought this gem full price at Gamestop, couldn't find it at Wal-Mart. Online rocks, sense of speed rocks, crash & damage rocks, everything rocks if one rates it for what it is and not what it's not (GT). I'm quite smitten with it. Sit close to your television and turn up the sound, and let this game rock you...

I'll say it this way:

It's the first NFS game that gave me sense of "OH (bleep) I'M GONNA DIE!" when racing a supercar on the 'Ring.

Tip: Use a wheel and a good sound system. Enjoy.

I really like Shift. And I bagged the crap out of it before it came out because quite simply, I'd been let down too many times by EA and the franchise.

But I bought it, paid full dollar, and it's been an excellent game. Some handling issues on higher levels, but overall, it's great fun.

If you wanna kick back and have a fun time and don't take yourself too seriously, this is a brilliant game to fang around with, especially on a Sunday afternoon with a couple of cold beers, a decent wheel and a cranking sound system. What's more, all those mates who won't touch GT when they come round to your place will give Shift a go.

If you're asking whether or not you should buy it, then you probably need goading, which means that you want to be pushed into the game, but deep down inside, you're not sure whether the price will cover the fun factor. If I were you, YES, I would buy Shift, but I'd wait until the price drops, that way you're less likely to feel like you've been jibbed if you don't like the game and more likely to be immensely pleased with your purchase if you love it.

;)

For me, as I think it's plausible it will take another year before GT5 gets released, Shift definitely is worth buying. The graphics are very good, the physics of most cars are very good and it has the Nurburgring. It's a shame about the bugs and glitches but I'm having a lot of fun on the Ring especially with the Lancer Evo.
As soon as Gt5 gets released Shift will go back on the shelf but for the time being I love it.

In a nut-shell:

Physics - significantly less than a full sim.

Immersion of cockpit visuals, sound & FFB - best PS3 sim yet.

Makes for a confusing but still enjoyable gaming experience.

Hi guys, some advice please...

Am I able to drive on the Ring from the start? I just wanna VTEC my way around the ring and generally not interested in the main game per se since it's so buggy as hell at the moment.

what was you driving? my guess is a Zonda R.

I started working my way throgh them Sunday afternoon... I have all the Japanese tracks, Donnigton and Brands (both versions), I already had the full Ring, but now I need to do the sections, then on to Silverstone and finally the US ones. Good fun.

I didn't vote because I think the game is not worth buying till they fix the bugs.

Shift would definitely be an amazing game if it had everything that it does now, but using Supercar Challenge Physics instead. I always have trouble deciding which of the two to play (Shift normally wins because I haven't finished it yet but I have finished SCC).

I've owned every racing game made for the Playstation since launch of the PS1. I've owned every EA racing game made. The history of the francise is well documented, the Nascar series dismal, Pro Street a big disappointment. That being the case, I've only ever returned 1 game in 14 years. I finished Undercover from beginning to end twice and enjoyed it. I like to think that I am relatively open minded and can easily accept the fact, that ALL racing games fall short of my expectations in their own ways.

That being said, read the "bugs and glitches" thread. Shift is far and away the most flawed game ever to be released in video game history. I bought it on launch day (pre-ordered as I always do) and ran it up to Level 50 with well over 700,000 points in less than 2 weeks.

I wanted to love this game and I tried my hardest to give it the benefit of the doubt. They offered us an "update" which they claimed fixed 25 of the known glitches. This "update" was only 34Mb, and actually caused me to have glitches that I hadn't experienced before the update. That small of a file size, couldn't have much in it to fix anything other than the damage remodeling and location of the "grid girls".

Hours spent tuning in Quick Race mode are wasted when the settings do not transfer over to online play. The frustrations finally over came my love for the Ring, Road America and Spa. It became the 2nd game ever to be returned by me.

If EA were ever to find a way to fix ALL of the issues, it would be a really good game and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. However, from what I've seen so far, you couldn't give me this game for free 👎

It is worth a rent, it seemed like it got old in the span of what a normal rent would be.

Supercar Challenge takes the cake for being flawed.

Sorry how so? From memory I suffered from one glitch for a trophy and overcame it. If you follow my posts in the glitch thread you will see just how many i've experienced in shift.

To be fair, there is a lot of the game that can be played without encountering any serious glitches. However, the limitation of the physics is unavoidable. Frustrating because much about the game IS outstanding.

My story with Shift is very similar to my story with Grid. 1 - Bought them, 2 - Tried them, 3 - Got dissapointed with them, 4 - Shelved them.

Currently playing SuperCar Challenge. The more i play it ... the more I like it.

I don't know..
I tried the demo..
And it's pretty fun actually...
And even pretty good!
But when you compare it too gran turismo...
Maybe it's just that, that i'm used to playing gran turismo...
and because the gran turismo feel is printed in me..
I don't know why,
but every time I play a race game it's like..
hmmm this doesn't feel right.
And when I play Gran Turismo.. the controls, everything, feel perfect!

Sad. :(

You're missing out. There's a lot more to PS3 sim racing than GT. Spend a lot of time getting used to another game & you'll realize GT is far from perfect...
