It's just a Rabbit.

This past weekend we went to Gatlinburg, TN with my brother and his family. On Saturday, November 14th, the women went shopping at the outlet malls and I planned on going to tackle US 129, The Dragon.

dragon-at-deals-gap.jpg

This was the first time I had my Rabbit in Gatlinburg and wanted to take it out on a road that I could enjoy.

I need to set this up as something occurs in the video that is a bit disturbing. On the way there we first passed through a town called Townsend on highway 321. While there I see a guy on a blue motorcycle getting a ticket from the police while his friend sat by himself down a bit on his red bike waiting. I thought it was odd that a duo would be riding together and only one would get a ticket for something. I figured he must have been doing something stupid.

Later we have to cut across on the Foothills Parkway. This is a scenic road with a 45mph speed limit. I get caught behind an Impala driving under the limit, but due to the nature of the road there is very little passing opportunity. That is when the pair of bikers comes up behind me fast. The blue bike is constantly right on my bumper and dropping back before turns to whip around and slam on his brakes to avoid hitting me. The red bike hangs back a couple of car lengths. At this point I understand why one got a ticket and the other didn't.

Then as we turn on to 129 the Impala goes down a side road and I have nothing but open road in front of me. I open it up a bit thinking the biker would be right on me, but he stays back. At this point I think that maybe he is cautious of the dragon itself. As my brother sets up the camera we begin to head into the switchbacks and that is when the video starts, with the blue bike coming right up on me again, so close that I can barely see anything below his headlight. I was not the fastest guy out there, and as you can see I move off the road twice to let others go by. I did everything I could to be courteous and safe. That is why I have no sympathy for the biker in the video.

Anyway, here is the video of me heading south on US 129, The Dragon. It is split into two parts due to You Tube length limits.

Part 1 - minor language warning, as my brother drops a barely audible, but deserved, S-bomb

Part 2

Wee, that was fun! By the way, my stereo wasn't that loud, but the camera was right next to the front right speaker. As for the biker, he was fine, but his bike was in bad shape. The support struts that connect to the front wheel were bent and one of his indicators was hanging by a wire. I never saw him again, so I assume he didn't try to finish.

So, after the run we stopped at the Tail of the Dragon gift shop.

It was nice and I got to talking to the guy running it. When I told him about the guy on the bike he immediately said, "Sport Bike? Figures." Before I left I bought a small 60's style road sign design sticker to mark my car with.

dscf4695.jpg

From there we headed down to Cheoah Dam, also known as Fugitive Dam, as that is where they filmed part of The Fugitive, apparently.

It had been raining a lot recently, causing mud slides in some areas, so the lake was right at the top of the dam.

After that little stop off it was time to head back north on The Dragon. This time my brother used his digital camera to film a time laps movie. This run worked out very well because I had no traffic issues until I was out of the switchbacks.

From there we headed back, but decided to stop off for some sightseeing shots on the Foothills Parkway.

They call them the Smoky Mountains for a reason.

dscf4669.jpg

As you can tell from that last picture, it isn't all mountains around the Foothills Parkway. That is because it rides along the top of a narrow ridge that borders the mountains.

Before now I had always paid to ride go karts in Gatlinburg/Pigeon forge. Obviously, that is out of the question now. This only cost 150 miles on my car. Considering I filled up with gas in advance, about $35. Go karts range anywhere from $8-$15 depending on the course and type of karts, and it only lasts for five minutes or less. It would cost hundreds to drive 22 miles on them, be less fun, and have less scenery.

And there were a few professional photographers out there that day too I am seriously contemplating buying a 10 megapixel version of this from them.

Their site is a good source of car pron too.

Is your car the inline 5? Sounds mean for a Rabbit.

Loved the video, though it needed more mechanical music. We have a local road very similar in nature to what you were driving, though I enviously admit your's is the more technical, between us. :irked: Had to raise a big thumbs up when I heard Alice In Chains come over your radio. :D:tup: Love the pics also (funny my road out here's right by a man-made lake/dam and water treatment plant.

Yep, 2.5 liter inline 5. It is all standard base model parts. Well, unless you count the rubber floormats, but I doubt that affects the engine sound. I know for a fact that throaty sound is part of why I instantly fell in love with my car during the test drive. Unfortunately you won't hear that from an average Rabbit driving down the road because they don't keep it in the power band. During my daily driving it doesn't sound like that as it sits comfortably at 3,000 rpm just cruising along.

If I had realized that the vents (it was a warm 76 degrees and sunny so I needed some air flow) and stereo would have been that loud I would have made adjustments. But I didn't get a chance to review the video until we were back at the hotel, an hour's drive away.

Check the weather and date. Certain stuff in the area is closed depending on conditions.
It'll be a while before I'm back that way again.

And I'll be with my wife.

And the kids.

In a Pilot. :guilty:

Sounds like a return trip is in order to rectify that. :sly:

Damn right! 👍

This Dragon place, do I or don’t I? It seems like I should but that’s a long way to go for something slightly different then I already have in my back yard. Of course it would be a two wheeled trip if ever. Still, it looks like you had a blast and thanks for the pics and vids. 👍

It is described as a bikers' heaven. Those of us in cages just hold you up.

Between personal experience and what I have seen on You Tube everyone can get along if there is a good amount of patience (it is a public road with even the occasional 18 wheeler) and courtesy. In my case I feel that I was far enough back from the guy on the bike to not have played a role in his accident, especially as his earlier behavior showed he wasn't acting smart. But I have seen videos of people run off the road by a lumbering large vehicle or people going off when attempting a bad pass.

Similarly I have seen footage where people working together and acting smart has led to enjoyment for everyone. This is everything from bikes giving escorts for large trucks and daily drivers recognizing they are way under the speed limit and pulling over to let people go by.

Some also circle around via another road through the mountains to make a full day of it. But that road cuts through the national park, and it is a long enough route that one really slow driver can mess up your one chance at the run.

Nice pics and vids, FK 👍

I think driving the Dragon would just frustrate me. But I would like to one day... just can't see going 800 miles just to do it though.

Like that stock? Impressive!

Hey it's fine. Still sounded amazing. 👍👍

You know, for being part machine you kick serious ass.

Edit: And the post below has all kinds of amazing going on! Excellent find Uno!!:lol:

Thanks, livemusic.

Nope, that's not him. Awesome shot though. That turn is near the southern end of the route. The sign indicates Tail of the Dragon is on the right, but that is the lot I pull into at the end of my video. So, this pic is from the complete opposite end of The Dragon, and in another state (NC).

Uno, quick question. What is a Motard? As we were walking away from helping the guy he told one of the other bikers that stopped to have fun on his motard. I wasn't sure if it was an insult or an actual type of bike. It sounded like an insult but that seemed odd to do to someone who just stopped to make sure you didn't die.

TB
But on your next Whiskey run to Lynchburg, it's only an extra 320 miles! :P

(No offense to Jack fans) I prefer my Whiskey from Strathspey :P Which would be another 3,300 extra miles... if I had a submarine.

OT: It's gotta be so frustrating heading into one of those turns wondering if you can give it even 9/10ths. Kinda like going out on a hot date with Jessica Alba.. while being chaperoned by her dad. :scared:

We should just petition NC to make it a closed, one way toll road like the 'Ring :D

Thanks Uno, that makes a lot more sense now, as one of them had a bike very similar to that.

OT: It's gotta be so frustrating heading into one of those turns wondering if you can give it even 9/10ths.
You start to get confident but then you hit some S-turn with a dip toward the outside in the middle and feel the car want to go in the opposite direction of the road and you are back to playing it safe. You know you are having a good time when you feel your stomach go in the opposite direction of your body.

I'm actually kind of thankful I had some traffic on my first pass. I could see the behavior of the car in front of me and knew what to expect.

If it weren't two states that were involved and it weren't on the edge of a national park you could try. But even if you could get all governments involved to do it the environmentalists would come out of the woodwork to complain about them encouraging polluting activities in the middle of an area that is a protected home for black bears.

And it looks like I missed ABC News reporting on the road because I was in the area when it aired.

Good write up Steve 👍!

I really want to venture down their and check it our, but I am afraid of all the psychos that head down there and think it is some sort of race track. Plus I've heard stories of the truckers who hate people who are out driving the road. The Dragon seems like such a double edged sword to me.

I know they do MINI's on the Dragon, which would be cool, but a lot of people who own Coopers are professional hoons and I don't think I would really feel safe sharing the road with them.

Eh maybe I'll head down there and do it on a week day or something so I don't have to contend with that many people. I'd give it a bit more than I would driving on a normal road, but I don't think I could really push my car. If I screwed it up down in TN it's a long ways back to Detroit.

Now I'm just rambling. Glad to see you slayed it and I'm glad you posted up your videos and what not. I really liked the time lapse one, pretty neat.

If everyone plays nice it works fine. I pulled over for the bikers and the M3. There is actually a sign suggesting that truckers find a different route. Problem is that with I-40 and US64 both closed due to landslides that is easier said than done right now. Once that is all cleaned up it should calm down a bit.

I think you can see one in my video. It looks suspiciously similar to this one.

Before I left I checked tires, oil, brakes, and even cleaned my windows to prevent possible fogging.

That was my brother's idea. He loves time lapse.

Well, it's not my concern for the road itself or even the risk of personal life and limb. I'm not worried too much about staying on the road. It would be the argument I would be having with myself while on it.

It'd be like a little angel and devil sitting on either shoulder and the convo would go something like this.

Right shoulder: Okay, remember now, this is a public road. Be nice and follow the rules.

Left shoulder: Gogogogogogogogogogogogogogogogo. Apex right next to that pile of leaves. Gogogogogogogogog. There's no cars in the other lane, cut that corner you thumb sucking candy-ass! Gogogogogogogogogogo.

Right shoulder: What, are you trying to kill somebody??! Save it for the track!

Left shoulder: Gogogogogogo. Don't lift for that one up ahead, you can totally take that flat out.

Right shoulder: OMG! Slow down! It's a blind corner! There could be a person standing by the side of the road taking pictures!

Left shoulder: You just left at least 12 mph of exit speed on that last corner, you cheese-****. GogogogogogogoGO!!!

Right shoulder: I think the pads are melting....

Left shoulder: STFU. That's because he's listening to your lame ass and using them too much. Gogogogogogogogogogogo.

Right shoulder: Um. Your passenger looks nauseous. Better back off.

Left shoulder: ******* SLOW ****** GET OFF THE ROAD. Screw the double yellow, go around them. Gogogogogogo.

Right shoulder: Jesus, Mary, Mother and Joseph! She's gonna hurl!

Left shoulder: D000D! you TOTALLY just got air coming over that! That was EPIC!!! Gogogogogogogogogogogogogogogogo.

Right shoulder: .....And those would be police lights.

Left shoulder: Pah! Let's see if Smokey can catch THIS!

Anyway, I think the restraint of a monk would be required :D

Oh, that was a total joke. It would never happen.

You're right, the cliff is ominous, and the mountain face has the power to rip a tire of its bead and ruin an alignment. I know this. Not of my car, but my spare tire was involved. You're correct about the people taking pictures on the side of the road. That's when you speed up. What better way to see your body roll from the outside!

Also, the NC side can be thrown in a dumpster. Tennessee is where it's at. This road would be absolutely amazing for a closed event. I'm thinking touge competitions, rally time trials, etc. Though I would prefer some concrete barriers to the cliff and trees on the west side of the road.

FK, you make me want to go back. Nice trip!

Extreme envy.

Just finished a trackday the other day... nice, rolling road course.

But that was just 12 turns... the Dragon is... how many?

Ah yes, my angel was my brother. On the second run my tire cut over the white line as I rounded a turn and my brother about freaked. After the first run he also stood next to my car for a few minutes going, "Dude, your brakes are hot. We should waste more time at the dam while they cool." My response was, "This isn't your Prius and every part of this car is infinitely better than yours."

After we were back at the hotel his wife asked how it was and if he was scared or sick and he said, "That was fun and it was a good road for driving, but I would never drive it like that. I don't think my Prius could do that."

Anyway, I think the restraint of a monk would be required :D
And I am no monk. I feel I balanced keeping it safe and having fun well though.

Oh, that was a total joke. It would never happen.
You're joking now, but when you get caught behind a Kia with two old ladies this is exactly what you are thinking.

TB
And I'll be 3 miles back in the Pilot.
See my above note on the old ladies in the Kia.

You're correct about the people taking pictures on the side of the road. That's when you speed up. What better way to see your body roll from the outside!
I have to order some of those pictures. Two of them have some really good shots. Did you order any?

Also, the NC side can be thrown in a dumpster. Tennessee is where it's at.
But I think going from NC to TN is the better run.

This road would be absolutely amazing for a closed event. I'm thinking touge competitions, rally time trials, etc. Though I would prefer some concrete barriers to the cliff and trees on the west side of the road.
Definitely should do some closed events. It would be awesome for tourism. Heck, even just close it to allow some stupid fun runs and club rallies.

I don't know if concrete barriers are necessary. I think that guard rails would be enough. There are enough trees to keep the cars from going off on all but the overlook points, and bikers are the only ones that have died out there in years, so just something to keep them from shooting between trees and over a cliff is all I see is needed on most of it.

FK, you make me want to go back. Nice trip!
Your October pics are what made me decide to do it. This is the first car I have had that I truly enjoy driving, but due to gas mileage and 4-door convenience we have always taken my wife's Yaris S sedan on vacations. But this was my first trip to Gatlinburg since getting my car and I told my wife we were taking Jack purely so I could do this.
