Ok, this has probably been asked before, and I spent 45 mins searching and couldn't find anything, so the mods or boffins of GTP will probably come in with an answer after 3 minutes of searching - plus I don't think it should go in the cheap cockpit thread because hopefully this will turn into a build thread and everything and balance out.]

----------------------------------------------------------

I have a wheel and I'm getting tired of not using it, so I need a stand. Because I just dumped a whole heap of cash into a holiday for end of school celebrations, I don't have the $300 to spend on a WSP, so I'm going to make one over the Christmas break.

The design brief is simple - pretty much do what the WSP does....or to elaborate:

# It MUST be able to fold away flat - some disassembly will be tolerated

# It MUST be height adjustable and reach adjustable (in other words adjusting the distance from you to the wheel horizontally)

# Hence, it MUST be compatible with a wide range of seats, and more importantly, sofas

# It MUST be stable. We are probably talking 3-4 support legs, not the one as seen on WSP

# Any material is fine - but keep in mind I have no experience nor have any tools for metal work and I can't see a PVC rig being folded up, so wood would probably be the best bet, seeing as I have some experience and can do joints and rebates pretty good, but I have crap tools at home

# There MUST be a rear support bracket for the pedals - experience shows that the pedals slip away on my carpet - and this bracket MUST be adjustable

# I don't want it costing an arm and a leg, so I'd like to keep material costs on the low side.

---------------

I don't need engineered orthorgraphic drawings with dimentions in AS1100 standards or anything like that. I just want sketches, ideas, Google SketchUp, MS paint drawings, I have AutoCAD, so that'd be fine too - but really - any form of ideas either literary tips/suggestions or illustrations.

I have done up one very sketchy design myself, and I'll post it up soon once I do a rough drawing on MS Paint. I don't need measurments - I can do that myself as long as I know how the thing works.

So - it'd be great if you could help me come up with something. 👍

And I'm sorry if this has been done before.

:D sorry im not so skilled with drawings..

Sounds like a difficult thing to accomplish for a home job.

Ah HA - Thats why I'm asking the resident GTP boffins for help ;)....but all I have so far is some idiot posting up something totally unpractical following none of my criteria.

So.. have you checked out my thread yet? https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=123594 ;)

Yes I did - and very impressive too - except:

Seeing as I'm going to have to do this myself - your design is way out of what I can do at home - maybe at school it could be done, but my workbench at home is...well.....lets say dad says its a work bench and me otherwise

And I don't think I can ask you to build me one because..

I don't want it costing an arm and a leg

....although your DFP stand looks more basic and really all I need.

👍

Well technically my design can be done with a hand saw, a drill and a lot of skill and patience

May I ask what wheel you are using? DFP/DFGT/G25/G27/etc?

Also all my design's core principle revolves around minimizing the fabrication work required resulting in more cost efficient products so you may be surprised with the actual price of it. 👍

Depending on your budget I can be quite flexible in terms of the services I provide such as having the parts prefabricated and you can put it together yourself (like ikea) or if you're really on a shoestring budget then I can just pre-cut and drill the materials and you can do the finishing touches yourself (lots of sanding, varnishing, etc) before assembling it.

As for the adjustable height and pedal supports, these can be incorporated into the existing design (although a design fee will be charged for new or major redesigns, simple dimension/length changes will incur no fee).

PM or email me 93360dzyn@iinet.net.au for more details/enquiries :)

Errrr. No drill press - which is bad because the work table is beyond wobbly (handles like a boat.....?) so patience would....yeah - wear down quicker than usual .

But really your whole design sounds and looks awesome - I have an old GTF right now, but I have half a mind to change up to a G25/7 or even a Fanatec (depending on GT5 compatability) once I get a competant stand. I don't need the shifter on a slightly lower level though, so like a wider version of the DFP is all that's needed.

Where are you situated? Does UNSW have on campus accomodation? (Trying to work out postage)

Ummm, yeah UNSW has plenty of on campus accommodation... I'm not sure how you're trying to figure out postage though? :odd:

Basically if you're in Sydney then pickup is no problem from my place (near Baulkham Hills/Parramatta area, not UNSW Kensington, I don't live at uni )

Otherwise postage may be somewhere around the $30 mark if I remember correctly.

Well......yeah - I was figuring out if I could do pickup IF I were to do a deal with you.

I'm thinking about the el'cheapo option of sanding and wood finish before assembly. Its just I'm short on the dough because I just payed for a shoolies type trip to Melbourne for the Australian open in Jan.

I'm interested - I'll give you that :P.

Well yes pickup is no problem, not for me anyway :)

To give you an idea the materials cost for the G25 Table was around the $80 mark, whereas I expect it may be around the $40~$50 mark for the DFP Table (more common parts).

As I am only selling you my creations, what you pay for in materials is at cost price (exactly the same as you would pay at Bunnings if you bought it yourself) and they are all documented in the invoice I provide (you could take it to Bunnings to compare if you really wanted to).

Keep in mind that you generally get what you pay for so even though my prices are very competitive compared with any other product, you shouldn't expect it to be dirt cheap. It has to make sense for me to do it too :P

So +/- $75 ish all up - with me only needing sandpaper, a spanner/screwdriver and varnish then eh?

Sounds good.

Is there a chance of a video to see how it folds up or its stability while the wheel is in use?

You forgot a brush :P and maybe some mineral turps.

Video.. maybe do one for the DFP Table later tonight, it simply just rotates around about 300 degrees, nothing else to it (not really, my secret )

Stability? Very stable and it should be considering I have my monitor resting on the G25 table  basically you could kick it. But don't do that :)

Ok - well a video would be awesome - and I have that sort of money in the kitty, so it will definatly be considered.

👍

Sure no problem, I'll do a quick video of the G25 Table with some time trialing action and a folding video/gif image of the DFP Table later tonight. Should be up by tomorrow 👍

Ok cool - does that can come with it too? :P

Nah - it looks stable, the price is good, does what I'd want it to do, and all I'd need to build it are above mentioned tools (spanner etc.....I'm assuming all the bolts etc are included?).

I'll get back you you :D 👍.

They're solid steel cylinders and they're $999999999 each.

All the parts you need to actually construct it including screws, bolts, nuts and washers are included. Provide your own consumables (sand paper, varnish, steel wool, elbow grease, etc). PVA glue between the joins and superglue to stop the nuts from becoming loose is recommended. Don't skimp on the details otherwise the final product will not look and operate as good as it should.

No rush for the next few weeks as I'm busy with other projects and revamping the workspace so take your time :) you know my details yeah 93360dzyn@iinet.net.au
