ANNOUNCEMENT AND SIGNUP THREAD

Welcome!

The racing pentathlon, as you may know already, is a multi-game event created with the sole purpose of testing the skill of players in the top five of the most distinguished PS3 racing games .

Of course we have many ace drivers here in gtplanet. But ... usually they are ace drivers in ONE of these five games.

Do you guys know if any gtplanet member can be a top finisher in TWO of these games ... or THREE (and I won't even mention FOUR and FIVE :D )

Do you guys think you can do it?

Well, it's probably time to find out! :D

And discover who, in gtplanet, can adapt better - and faster - to different tracks and cars, and also to different games, racing disciplines and ... physics!

The concept is simple: One evening, Five games, at least one race in each of them.

Its implementation, however, proves to be a very difficult task. Several of these games don't have (at all or just properly working) essential online features and that creates our need to be inventive in the overcoming of the resulting difficulties.

So, I will refrain to define the specifics of this event until I get a clearer picture of how many gtplanet members sign up to take part in it.

Thing is, I will have to divide players in groups of 8 (mainly because of GT5P's random matching and because of the lobby limit of 11 players in F1:CE).

And, for each group of 8 players that signup for this I will need someone responsible to take care of said group and fulfill the hosting duties or delegate them during the event to those with a better/more stable connection (but keeping the responsability of running the group, regardless of who is hosting the lobbies).

With the approval of Jordan, this signup thread is published in 5 forums (GT5P - NFS:Shift - Console & PC Gaming - Supercar Challenge - F1:Championship Edition). We will see how many players, regular posters in all of them, submit their entries and, in consequence, how many groups of 8 players will need to be created (therefore, how many of you guys will be asked to fulfill hosting and race-group leading duties).

Now, the details:

1) Date & Time - April 18th (Sunday) , 21:00 GMT

2) Races (many rules and definitins still TBA at a later time)

- GT5P - Expert World Event available at the relevant date. Free choice of car (if the WE allows it). Players will be divided in 2 groups of 4 players each, each group will do a race and after that race the top two of each group meet in final A, and the bottom two of each group meet also in final B, to do a second race. Scoring will be given considering final A gives us 1st to 4th positions overall and Final B gives us 5th to 8th position overall.

- NFS: Shift - 2 laps race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Manufacturer race, meaning, everyone will go with the same car.

- Supercar Challenge - 7 laps race at Spa-Francorchamps. Car TBA.

- V8 Superstars : Next Challenge - 10 laps race at Portimão. Race rules and settings TBA.

- F1:CE - Race at Interlagos. Number of laps and other settings TBA

3) Requirements to take part:

Minimum - to own at least 3 of the pentathlon games

Recommended - to own at least 4 of the pentathlon games

Optimal - to own ALL the 5 pentathlon games

(note: F1:CE - NTSC Version isn't online-able anymore so owning it is irrelevant to assess the above requirements)

4) Scoring - Old F1 style, meaning 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points from 1st to 8th in each of the event races.

5) Relevant results - Best 4 out of 5, so if you miss one race that's no big problem. However, if you must miss 2 (because you only have 3 games)that can seriously compromise your end result.

6) Who proceedes to a next stage - Not knowing how many players will take part in this, therefore not knowing how many groups, it is difficult to say what will happen after the races that will be held next April 18th. But IF we have (this is an example) 4 groups, my intention (if people have sufficient interest in it) is to organize a "Stage 2" of the Pentathlon, with only the 2 top finishers of each group in Stage 1.

Disclaimer: No promises are made of a Stage 2 happening in the future, I'm just saying that I would consider this option if there's enough interest to justify its organization.

7) GTP OLR rules & guidelines apply for any issue about track behaviour. In case you don't know them, or if you have any doubt, check them here: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=111241

8) Deadline to apply for this event - April 15th, just three days before the event happens, until 23:59 GMT

9) How to apply for this event - To keep things in some kind of order, and to make sure no one gets missed, I ask all who want to submit their entries to do it in the announcement and signup thread published in the

SUPERCAR CHALLENGE FORUM

BUT take good note of this:

I will be the first in that thread's list, because I submit my entry the momnent I post it. However, I can only be responsible for the first group of 8 players applying. This means that, from the 9th player onwards, acceptance of submissions will be kept provisional until the nomination (by me) of another as responsible for the second group, and third, etc, until we can be sure we have people enough to keep all groups racing properly.

10) Competitor Names

Please sign up in the relevant thread using YOUR PSN ID (the one you will use in the event) and also by providing informatin of what games you have. I'll get the list moving with my name and feel free to copy and paste the list and add your name to it. The more the better.

It is just a pity that NTSC games can't enter the same lobbies we have here. :(

btw, I'm glad I picked Interlagos, yesterday I behaved decently there, while at Melbourne I had Shaggy Alonso lapping me after 5 or 6 laps! :scared:

LOL Jeff, that's the Ultimate Gamer! I'm afraid to say it reminded me in my good old GT5P days, racing T&L mates on the PS3 while at the same time using the laptop with skype to be able to talk with them.

I even had two keyboards. One for the laptop and the other for the PS3

Anyway, here's something interesting. I am filing all submissions into a excel chart just to have a more visual (and immediate) understanding about WHO has WHAT games.

This is a pic of that chart.

picture.php

Funny that SCC is the only game - so far - that everyone has.

F1:CE is the one with most absentees, due to the retarded region lock that prevents NTSC folks to enter PAL lobbies ...

Important notice: I had some people telling me that they may have some trouble with the scheduled date and time (April 17th / 21:00 GMT). I think we can leave that "problem" to be solved closer to that date. If, as I suspect, we will need to split racers in two different groups, we can also have two different schedules, although this is to be run in the weekend of April 17th and April 18th.

So, if the current - let's call it "default" - date and time doesn't suit you, do submit your entry anyway, maybe things will get sorted meanwhile.

Update:

The GT5P online events have just changed so now it is possible to pick the first race of the Pentathlon (I guess this lineup of events will still be the same two weeks from now).

Pentathlonists, start practising ... this:
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=126648

And do join up the schedule used by the GT specialists, no better guys for training if you come to this event from the Shift, SCC, V8 or F1CE sections :D

Of course ... if you come from the GT section already, I suggest you practise Spa and the Nordscheife with the SCC and Shift players also :D :D

... or Portimão and Interlagos with the V8 and the F1 crews ... :D :D :D

Have to say, I like the way you can use several different cars, so long as they add up to 700PP, this is a neat feature of GT. I wonder will everyone end up using the same car for that race - if there is a generally accepted best car - or if we will all go with different manufacturers? Btw, do you have to own the car offline to race it online or can you use any?

If you keep a close look to the thread I linked you'll probably get good feedback about what cars will shine with 700 PP. It will never be only one car though and my bet is that, as usual, the GTP racers will be split between 4 or 5 cars of their preference.

And yes, you must have the cars offline to use them online. AND (I don't know if you have a GT5P saved career or not) you must complete the "S" offline Events to be able to enter the Expert online events.

There were just a couple I think I didn't ever manage to win or complete. I vaguely remember having to overtake everyone in one lap of the high speed ring, which I found simply impossible. But I completed almost all of them I think.

Btw, i've ordered SSV8:NC - I got it at a really good price so it ain't the end of the world if it's rubbish. It'll be fun to be able to participate properly in this competition now. I think F1:CE will be my trump card, hopefully it'll be enough to give me a fighting chance of making it through 👍

K, after my first practice session in a 700 PP car around Suzuka my best time so far is a 2:05.457, though I'm assuming this will soon be pummelled by everyone else. I used the racing Ford GT for it, can't remember the name. Are there any rules regarding driving aids for the GT5P part of the pentathlon?

Shaggy, it'll be great to have you onboard for all the 5 races, glad you decided to order V8SSNC! 👍

About the 700 PP car for GT5P, I would pick a different car if I were you, the GTLM is very fast but also a very difficult beast to master. At 700 PP I'm not sure what to pick but by reading the event's thread it looks like the killer cars are the Ferrari California and the Renault Clio VR6.

I don't use the PS3 since we did our few F1CE races so I haven't tried anything lately, and have no GT5P 700 PP-Suzuka previous experience.

But ... in GT5P there are a few cars I really like and know. Among them the Tuned Vette and the F430, so those will probably be the cars I will try first.

EDIT - Sorry, missed your last question: In the GT5P race you will be able to use any aids that the game allows (racing line, ABS, TCS, SC, whatever). One word of caution though ... TCS and SC keep you on track, but cost you time ... lots of it.

PS - I use ABS on 1. You will find that most tunes available in the tuning section of GT5P are with this ABS setting also (1).

About ABS, that was only started because basically no one was turning it off online. It was a massive disadvantage to turn it off, so everyone just used it. Now that GT5P is less popular, it would be fun if people started not using it for a change, locked brakes and all . Obviously its difficult to regulate though.

I've read this before from other GTers but I haven't found the results to be that glaringly obvious an improvement over using a little TC. Although I may be getting better acceleration out of corners with it switched off, that benefit is slightly negated by the extra caution I have to use - I can't attack the corners in 100% the same way as if I was to use TC even just set to 1. With the TC switched on I can just banzai every corner. I did manage a lap a couple of tenths better without TC, but overall I haven't found it to be a huge benefit. Maybe i'm just not extracting as much out of the car/track as I need to before the effects of switching TC off become apparent.

Yeah, TC is only limiting once you're on the limit. It also depends on the car too, some cars are easier to drive at the limit but the TCS will cut in sometimes even when the car is in a controllable slide, this is where it starts to lose you time.
Basically you can't have an oversteer-orientated setup work so well with TCS on. If you prefer less turn in though, it makes little difference.

I do think though that people make TCS out to be worse than it really is sometimes, its certainly not as limiting as ASM is.

Also, if you're still using the GTLM, then its always going to be initially easier with TCS on, because its a hard car to drive.

I've switched cars and i've found about 3 secs in lap time. Starting to find my limits though :yuck:
