Regarding "Emulation - Piracy by another name"

Why is emulation against the AUP? While widespread console emulation is indeed illegal, it is not illegal if you actually own the hardware you are emulating and are using the BIOS taken from that said hardware, as opposed to downloading it from a website.

It is illegal to take the BIOS from that said hardware. The BIOS is only legal when it resides in that said hardware. It is illegal to remove it and put it into something else. The BIOS remains Sony's copyright and is not yours to do with what you will.

Regardless, premium advertisers do not want to be associated with anything that borders on illegality, and emulation is not a gray area that I want to flirt with.

Exactly. Let me just add, all of this changing the original basis with a completely different layout, people are going to crowd around wanting information on how/where they can obtain this emulation. With all these online sites with downloads that promise you "Catch Free", "No Worries", "No/Free other lying schemes". If any takers actually think for a moment or two, they will hopefully know better than just find any download from anywhere.
Some emulation (NOT JUST EMULATION) downloads, may obtain illegal files that strangers are spamming on the internet, trying to get someone or a group of people in massive trouble. Even Arrested.!
Someone's going to be banned and/or restricted from certain priorities and areas.
No one needs a trouble maker. There is no need for a huge issue.

Something rant-ish, but I notice there is many viewpoints about this 🤬.

Famine should disscus about this issue (which is actually stickied and spreaded by him).

What?

No, there aren't many viewpoints at all. People either want to take advantage of emulation despite its illegality, or not. The fact is that it is illegal. Do what you want, but it has no place on a public forum in the first place, besides the wishes of the owner, and since Jordan says "No" then there simply are no other viewpoints on the issue.

He says "emulation is bad".

There are plenty of other corners of the web to discuss emulation, there's no big need to discuss it here.

However, since I don't own or run the site, it would be foolish to assume that I've "stickied and spreaded" anything entirely independantly...

Either way there's approximately 567,671 websites dedicated to emulation. If that's what you want, go there. It can't be discussed here.

^This pretty much. While I was at first upset when I noticed the sticky thread and I disagree with the wording, I know arguing about it would be a waste of time. GTPlanet is largely supported by advertising, whereas many emulation and emulation related websites are supported exclusively by financial input from their owners and user donations. As mentioned, advertisers don't want to have their products or services advertised or associated with a site that promotes gray area or downright illegal practices.

Occasionally threads pop up for people looking for a PS1 emulator or a GT disk image. I cannot stress enough that it makes a world of difference in your gaming experience to actually BUY the real thing play it on REAL HARDWARE. If you insist on pirating it and playing it on a PC, not only are you breaking the law, but you're missing out on the real experience. This shows that you have no appreciation for the game what so ever. And you're a cheapass.

I have a PS1, and I have all of the right equipment, except for the most important part, the memory cards. Thus, when I play a game on the proper equipment, I firmly agree it's several times better. But the problem is, I like saving my progress and being able to come back. Not possible without a memory card, so you can guess where I turned to when I got my copy of GT1.

eBay, I hope. You can get a PS1 memory card for £2.

Sureboss - No, even then I had help.

I have dollarz, not your silly pounds.

But yeah, I had a brief rendezvous with an emulator which will not be specifically referred to, thought it utterly sucked, then looked around for a memory card, and failed. I'll ask my mom to look on eBay, for I do not possess a credit card.

I have to admit, in college I pretty much had any emulated game you could want or even ask for (very FEW exceptions) and I have since purchased myself an NES, SNES and dug out my old N64 to play in our loft upstairs should I feel the need. I don't have the same selection mind you but of my favorite games I'm only missing about 15. It's been great and just to be safe I tossed out those DVD with the roms on them :) But, that said, I need to replace my SNES console, I got what I paid for it ($10) and I don't miss having to blow on my carts again :sly:

Yeah with emulation, if I own all the stuff, is it still illegal? I know it's a touchy topic here at :gtplanet: but I just wanted to know what goes on with this stuff.

It entirely depends upon the territory you're in. We're not experts on international laws. Some would argue that in the UK that scenario would class as legal - though they'd be arguing it quite incorrectly.

Honestly though, it's not rocket science. 90mph might be legal on your public roads, it might not. We don't care - tell us that you did 90mph, not where you did it. Specifics of emulation might be legal in your state/country/enclave, it might not. We don't care - tell us that you play Gran Turismo, not how you do it.

I guess I'll stick to what I've been doing....thanks for the help Famine
