Concerning my PS3 I was wondering if anyone knows if I can use the HDMI output and the RCA output at the same time? I want use my VCR to record my game play while watching the HD video output during play.
...and an HDMI to RCA adapter.
I have high doubts about that product. HDMI produces digital signal and both VGA and RCA are analog, so how would a simple cable change the method of the signal? I'm pretty sure it would need some sort of converter box into the middle. I wouldn't recommend to buy that cable.
One of the only devices that I could find that would convert HDMI to Composite is this one. Another option is that you could convert HDMI to VGA such as this device. Since VGA is an cable that carries an analog signal so it should be easy to convert the VGA to a composite video cable.
Just remember - the HDMI output device (your PS3) and the HDMI input device (your TV) - agrees on what signal can be passed through - And if the end to end communication is compromised, or one of the devices thinks the connection is tampered with, lowest common denominator will be used - hence something looking not quite as bad, but still not quite unlike, SVHS will be the result.
I think a regular capture card in your PC, and using the regular SVHS cable, when the need to record something occurs, will be the easiest, proven, and cheapest way to go..
So I go from the PS3 HDMI out > to my PC HDMI in ( video / tv card) {to capture all video} then HDMI out> to tv / monitor ? is that right ?
What's your card? I have never heard of any capture cards with HDMI.
There are some cards that can take in signal from HDMI. For example Blackmagic Intensity and Avertv Capture HD. I'm no expert, but HDCP often causes trouble when trying to record from HDMI. That could be an issue with PS3 too. But there's at least couple of cards that you can try to find out info on.
Some use fraps on PC with those cards (and avoid HDCP problems), but if you are going on that route, I suggest to use a splitter anyway. If you run the picture on your PC screen it can cause some delay/lag to what you see on the screen making playing much harder. And I guess that when capturing with fraps it requires quite a nice amount of power from your PC.
I think that component is the easiest way to play with HD-resolution and record at the same time. Hauppauge HD PVR.
