Hi GTPlanet,

First of all thanks to all the organisers of the WRS. it is awesome and this is in no way at all a 'pop' at you.

I wanted to announce my displeasure at the organisation of the WRS by country. I know that to some people this is unimportant but to me this is important and I would like to make a point.

If, for example you are from France you are French. Not European.

If, for example you are from Italy, you are Italian. Not European.

If, for example, you are from Canada, you are Canadian. Not North American.

If you are from Egypt, you are Egyptian, Not African.

You get the point.

Why therefore, if I am English, I am always referred to as being from the UK? I am English and would like it to be reflected that way. I'm sure the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish guys would like the same.

So my simple request, is for me to be from England and not the UK.

Pedantic as it may seem, it seems we lose more of our identity every day and I don't like it.

Thanks for reading.

England is only a 'home nation' and a constituent part of the country that is Great Britain, or the United Kingdom as it is also called. England is not strictly a country.

England is more of a country than the "UK" or "Great Britain"!

BTW, I am also English. :)

:ouch:

Really?

Anyway, your surprising sense of national pride aside, Please tell me if you can see England in this list of sovereign states.

I don't see a requirement for the event organisers to make you your own sub category.

I don't see any Scotland, Wales or N. Ireland in that list, why should England be any different?

-----

I am English,

I am from the UK,

I am also European for that matter,

However the event organisers want to categorise, is up to them. If they want to call me European they can, it is factually correct afterall.

Your lack of national pride also surprises me!

I'm not asking for my own personal sub-category, I'm asking to be recognised from the country I am from, not a big ask, considering all others can be placed by country, not by commonwealth realm or similar.

The United Kingdom is a Commonwealth realm consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

The main reasons for including this information in your submission are to:
1) showcase the international nature of this competition
2) more easily identify the game format in use

This second item has proved helpful already when sending out replay requests for the qualifier. Now that we have this information in the database, anyone should be able to look it up when checking replays for future events.

If someone has been misclassified, feel free to send me a PM, and I'll fix it in the registry.

I'm proud to be a member of the United Kingdom, I'm proud to be part of Europe, what is wrong with that? Am I not being specific enough to my local area?

I'm proud to be representing Cheshire? :sly:

I don't see why I should just limit myself to just England.

England is often recognised as a country in a sporting sense, and has of course been in the past. If you actually look at a list of recognised countries you will notice we fall under 'United Kingdom', so you can't really blame the event organisers for being correct.

You can say you are from England all you want, it doesn't change the fact that your country of origin (assuming you were born here), is listed as the United Kingdom.

I am from the country of England, that by default makes my nationality English, regardless of what the bureaucratic chimps think.

I don't think I'm being rude to ask for me to be representing England and not the UK.

Just to add to my point also, if you go ask a Scottish guy where he is from do you think they'll say the UK? Same for a Welsh guy, they will tell you, 99% of the time that they are either Scottish or Welsh. Why do us English have to say we are from the UK?

That's all well and good, but you are still missing the point that you're a United Kingdom national, not English.

If I say I am from the Kingdom of Cheshire, is that okay? Because that is not an internationally recognised country either.

Representin' :sly:

I made my point, to save this thread turning in to one of those legendary 'go around in circles for days thread' I'll cease posting.

_My opinion_ is that I'd like to be recognised as being English. Thats all.

Maybe you should start a civil war? ;) You may be from England (as indeed I am), but I am British, just as those Scots and Welsh are, doesn't really matter what they think (democracy ftw), our passports and birth certificates state us as British, so maybe we should look for those to recognise us as English before some web-based competition?

Can we get racing yet? [/nag]

It's getting really picky on this site lately! I suppose its because we are waiting for the events, idle thumbs and all that.

Interesting discussion. :)

A couple of years ago there was this guy. ->

He was living in the small village Neandertal nearly from Cologne, Germany.

So maybe you are a German, Neenor?

Maybe!

I do look a bit like that guy, except my back has more hair and I am more bow-legged!!

GT5 and Polyphony Digital Inc group the aforementioned 4 countries together and represent drivers from those countries with a [GB] tag and Union Jack flag. We are following the same format for the purposes of consistency. End of story 👍

All the best
