Mercedes-Benz 500E

MERCEDESBENZE500-W124--medium-1787_1.jpg

Production: 1990-1994
Engine: NA DOHC 4,973 cm3 V8
Power: 326 hp
0-100 km/h: 5.5
Top speed: 250 km/h

A car for which the phrase 'they don't make 'em like the used to' could be made for...

Massively over engineered, built like a tank, and to my eyes a very handsome car even today. I'd quite happily run a 300-24v... The fact that this has a big V8 stuffed under the hood just makes it even more desirable.

Cool.

I'd agree with Stotty. Handsome and well built - just as a Mercedes should be. And now it's looming into classic territory it does away with the slightly blingy "too much money" image that afflicts the bigger cars in Mercedes' current range.

Plus, I think I voted cool on the Mercedes-Benz 190 when I nominated it and it polled months ago, so it'd be inconsistent to vote an even more tank-like car with a V8 anything other than cool...

Cool. I like the big lights. The straight lines are, somehow, not over-rigorous and have a nice feel, and the V8 is a big plus. Also I dig the tradition with the upright emblem which they have since discontinued probably because of many steals.

What do you think about the light wipers?

Brilliant car back from Merc's over-engineered days but.... uncool.

It's just not old enough to be a bona fide classic, not new enough to be flash and not interesting enough to stand out in spite of those two things. When you pull up to pick a girl up in this she is just going to think you wanted a Merc and that's the best you could afford.

Oh and black plastic bumpers? That's ok on a Skoda or something but a prestige marque?

Seriously uncool. Only cool E-class Mercs are the Cossies. The rest lack racing history and are insignificant.

Gangster ride, and I think most people would crap their pants if they say you pull up and hop out in a suit, carrying a violin case.

It could probably pick up the ladies, but due to the crapping of the pants as you drive up, you probably wouldn't want to try anything on the first date.

Cool.

Except that's not a REAL cossie. :P

Besides, if they made this a race car...It'd something like the Gp. A Holdens and Fords. Which would be pretty cool.

Still...I'm split. I really don't have any feelings for this car. May have to go with the crowd...or just go Meh.

A rear wheel drive car with a big V8 up front...I've had a soft spot in my heart for cars like that since I first started driving. The problem with this one is all the extraneous crap that comes on a Mercedes.

Cool, but only just.

Err... 1980s?

Believe it or not cars haven't always had colour-coded bumpers.

I was oblivious to that. Is it an option or some models come as standard like that? Because I haven't seen any modern Merc having it.

Could be an option, but as far as I'm aware with models like the current C, you can have two grille options - the sportier one with the big emblem in the middle (see C63 AMG etc) or the more classic look of a chrome grille with the badge on the hood (as in the image I posted).

They did an E Class Cosworth?

Nope. They did an E-Class AMG "Hammer" though which is pretty cool.

This is a 90's car :)

Doesn't change the fact that a car doesn't look cool with them (subjectively), makes them look cheap. The Volkswagen Corrado from the same era had body coloured bumpers and that is a car I would say is cool.

Meh. Late 80s, early 90s - same thing. It was only when 90s cars started to get curvy that suddenly everyone wanted colour-keyed bumpers.

Anyway, I disagree. Doesn't make it look cheap IMO.

There's really nothing special about it. It's either driven by stingy old people who are too cheap to get a new one, a hoodrich person who lives in a rundown apartment and bought it because it's a Benz, or a disgustingly hip young person who lowers it, puts a rack on top, drives slow, and likes to think they're a photographer.

Uncool.

Cool, just because old and squary black Mercs are undeniably bad ass, in the same way that big old Volvos are geeky and cool.

You forgot realtors that aren't good enough to get a new one but still want a Mercedes.

That, plus it being a rather dull looking car gives it a seriously uncool from me.

You know what I meant when I mentioned 190E Cossies.. the 2.3 16v and 2.5 16v Evolutions that had Cosworth-tuned engines. Light, high-revving, nimble.. Against this lazy, overweight luxury cruiser.

See? Infinitely more cool.

If done right, black trim actually makes a car look better. When panels are all body-colored the car ends up look fat and heavy. Designers can use black trim strategically to make the cars look lower and lighter.

An unassuming super sedan with the overbuilt engineering of Mercedes of yore.

Cool.

Big Mercedes with a big V8 with big power for the time. And it's a handsome car to boot. What's not to like?

Cool.

And some 500E perfection, just for fun:
