LG Electronics wants the U.S. International Trade Commission to bar the import of the PlayStation 3 into the United States, according to a complaint.

The complaint, filed Friday with the ITC and first reported by Bloomberg yesterday, claims that the Blu-ray player in the PlayStation 3 violates several of LG's patents. The company cited Sony, Sony Corporation of America, Sony Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Sony Computer Entertainment America in the complaint, according to the docket page on the ITC's Web site.

The ITC 337 Law Blog, which is run by a private law firm, posted the complaint documents (PDF) yesterday.

According to the documents, LG said it holds two patents that it believes Sony violates in the PlayStation 3 related to the way a Blu-ray player reproduces data from a Blu-ray disc. The company cited another patent that covers the "reproduction of multiple data streams" by way of multiple camera angles. LG also said Sony violates a patent it holds on the display of text subtitles on Blu-ray.

LG's decision to take aim at Sony follows a complaint filed by Sony with the ITC in late December. In that complaint, Sony said that LG violates patents it holds for mobile phones. The company asked the ITC to bar LG from selling its mobile phones in the United States.

For its part, LG wants the ITC to launch an "immediate investigation" into Sony's use of the Blu-ray player in the PlayStation 3. The company wants the ITC to bar Sony from importing the PlayStation 3 into the United States. It also wants the console to be banned from any marketing or repair efforts Sony might engage in.

Neither Sony nor LG immediately responded to request for comment.

Its just a you sue me so I sue you back senario, (if you don't know what I mean then watch Judge Judy.)

Nothing will come of it, how much money is it LG loosing because of what they are claiming and how much money would removing the ps3 from sale in american loose Sony. They are nowhere near equal.

-sigh- LG is going to get a LOT of backlash from PS3 gamers.

And if just ONE of those gamers happens to be a 4chan user... LG might be screwed.

As for the McFly take on it, negative ten thumbs up. Here we go...

"LG Electronics wants the U.S. International Trade Commission to bar the import of the PlayStation 3 into the United States, according to a complaint."
As a PS3 fan, I say BOO! As a recent PS3 owner, I don't do anything since I live in Canada. But... still bad.

So wait... the blu-ray player in the PS3 violates patents set by LG? Sony's probably in a pretty big pickle, seeing as the PS3 plays Blu-Ray games. Well... skip the thing about the ITC Law Blog, and let's see why they're complaining.

"According to the documents, LG said it holds two patents that it believes Sony violates in the PlayStation 3 related to the way a Blu-ray player reproduces data from a Blu-ray disc. Uh... so they patented the tech? I call that a pretty smart move on LG's part, but geezus, just get Sony to pay a lot of money to you guys and call it a d--

So... wait... you're suing Sony over the PS3, after Sony sued you for your mobile phones? This sounds like you're just trying to be idiotic. Anyways... I'm sure you guys can solve your differences pea--

So... essentially, you're saying that Sony is not only never allowed to repair the damage caused by this, you also want them to stop importing the PS3 into the US. Okay, seriously. Ten thumbs down.

*sigh* I find it hilarious that the corporate world sues over the smallest dang things.

I have my LG television only for my Sony PS3. Oh, the ironing.

I had an LG LCD 42" tv for 3 and a bit years (since they were nearly five grand) and it died on me just last night.

I wonder if it was warning me something :/.

This.
I didn't read the article, but would people not be able to import PS3s anyway?

You must be new.

Too much hassle. Even if it isn't too much hassle, it's alot more hassle than going to Best Buy and buying one.

This is just a "You sue me, I sue you back". It will be settled out of court and we'll all forget about it in the morning.

If LG wins, I'll be the first to buy up all the PS3's I can and then sell them for an INSANE profit, YAY!

But I really doubt this will go anywhere. Unless GeoHot works for LG 💡

I am Exactly like Famine ,I see an ugly PS3 TV showdown coming :sly: .Who know maybe Sony might Provide an update banning PS3's from Working on LG TV's .But C'mon 2 Giant Organisations that are just playing silly.

Same with the LG TV situation.

That would be quite "funny" though if they did do that.

LG are just looking for attention.

Based on our experiences with LG products in general, I was not planning on buying any of their product in the foreseeable future and this type of frivolous legal wrangling (by both Sony and LG.....he started it, no HE started it...sigh) does not make me feel any better. And in the end, who pays for all the legal costs? We, the consumer, of course. Grrrrrrrr...

Um, isnt Blu-Ray a Sony/Philips creation anyway?

The way I see it: I create a Ferrari that is... pretty much a 458, but it's not. Ferrari gets mad about something else. I get mad about that and sue back. 👍

Remember a while back, when Sony sued LG because Sony claimed that LG was making phones that were using patented Sony technology? Do you think its related? I do. As mentioned before, it's just going to be another "they started it" type of war.

I have my LG television only for my Sony PS3. Oh, the ironing.

Yes, me too, on a 50" Plasma :sly: (PS: Don't you mean irony?)

So... what happened to Sony's lawsuit?

Companies need to beware of what they do in public, people support companies just like they do political parties, even before a law court outcome, any company can suffer from a humungous backlash if they've done something they shouldn't have.

-sigh-
And if just ONE of those gamers happens to be a 4chan user... LG might be screwed.

Imma Chargin' Ma Lazer!!!

Honestly, I hate it when companies make such stupid lawsuits. LG is just being a total dick.

I'm not really a PS3 guy, but since I do WANT one... I'll be back...

/b/ut I think LG won't like what I do :mischievous:

--EDIT--

only kidding in the spoiler.

Just send some Giant Enemy Crabs to Korea

Don't mind if I do :)

I wasn't going to buy an LG anyways, but if I was, I never will after this! :dopey:

When I read the second paragraph, if LG had grounds to sue SONY for patent violations, I was wondering how many SONY could sue LG for. Figures.

It's the typical Korean business mentality: "if we can't copy it and undercut their price, we'll sue 'em!"

No, seriously. I'd be willing to bet my entire GT garage that that's what went down in the LG boardroom!:scared::sly:

If the ban goes through, I'll be incredibly infuriated as will many other gamers. What LG fails to take into account is that decimating 20% of Sony's market is going to hurt the economy in the USA in the long run although slightly, plus it's going to REALLY suck for Sony fans.

If the ban goes through, screw LG, let's boycott the ban and keep our PS3. I for one will absolutely not import a console.

nobody read my spoiler? really? dammit, I'm actually going to go on 4chan now. I actually want the PS3 around, considering i'm a converted Microsoft fan.
