Do aftermarket wheels affect performance?

I've looked around and can't find anything definitive about this.

When looking at the different wheel options, the description above states that they "improve performance".....but I would have to figure that they are strictly cosmetic.

Can anyone confirm?

IRL, aftermarket wheels can improve performance by decrease unsprung weight. Conversely they can also hurt performance if they're heavy or over sized.

In this game, I don't think they affect anything.

unconfirmed, but i think they do something.

my rx8 is faster than my friends, and the only real difference is that i have non stock wheels on.

they might be wider and allow for better handling.

unconfirmed though... someone should do some testing!

When you fit them, tires do look wider, I'm not sure if this is reflected on performance as I haven't tested this.

Hmm, I really don't think they do.

For example, some cars come with top-of-the-line, lightweight, forged wheels stock. So how are we supposed to know if the aftermarket ones are better or not?

I really don't think they programmed in the weights/sizes of each different wheel. And if they did, that information should be given to us, and should show up on the Power Point system or something.

Rims add 10 hp, a wing adds 25 hp and stickers/decals/racing stripes add atleast 30 hp ;)

Unlike stickers and most wings out there, lightweight performance wheels do actually increase performance. Unsprung weight is one of the best things to cut down on. Around 18"-19" is the optimal size range, and what most racecars use. Any bigger and you start adding weight.

They could act as a modifier. For example, [original_wheel_weight * 0.75, tire_width * 1.10, tire_stiffness * 1.25] or something similar. I think all rims have the same characteristics.

It could be that in the game, they are all the same, mechanically.
Also cars already come with different tire sizes, stock. Some cars have better traction than other ones for just this factor alone.

If you think about it, things like engine inertia (affected by flywheels, clutches, that you can also upgrade), tire sizes (the intrinsic differences between each car) and other parameters aren't accounted into PP calculations.

In my view if they don't add to the performance points to the car then they don't affect the car other than visually. I'm 100% wrong on this though, probably, maybe.

tyres dont change the pp do they.. Yet they still change performance! I mite do a test tomorrow, il take a ford ka or something alike with narrow wheels as standard, and see hown fast it can take the last turn at tsukuba.. Then il change the wheels.. And see if it makes any difrence to the cornering speed! Sound fair?

I said I was 100% wrong, maybe, probably. Besides the thread is about wheels not tires. Of course tires change the performance of any car in the game. You can't compare the two.

Yeah, just dont use the Ka its a standard model and you cant change its wheels.

From experience, I'd have to say no.

Somebody feel free to prove me wrong on that one.

Fancy flywheels, stiffening, fully custom suspension & trans, these all improve performance but don't make a jot of difference to PP.

I understand those things aren't accounted into the PP system, which is why I added "or something." to the end of that sentence. I'm saying, in some form or another, we need to be told if they improve the car or not.

I know changing wheels does not affect weight.

Also, adding those big wings, winglets, splitters, extenders, strakes, and/or diffusers do not affect vehicle weight either.
