How to Start a Drag Tune?

When I say drag tune, what I mean is how to start a transmission tune. I know I ask a lot of questions on this forum, I try to repay with answers but this one I am totally stumped. What I am wondering is how to start a new transmission tune. By this I mean, do I try to go left on Top speed like most others, or right? Or do I leave top speed, and mess with the final gear? Or do I adjust final gear and Individual gears? But what do I do? I am just wondering what you guys do. ** For those of you tight fingered ones ;), I am simply asking for where to go to start and how to continue on most cars. Not your exact numbers. **

I believe he's more of the 1/4 mile run guy. I've seen you there often ghillie. But maybe I'm wrong.

Anyways the trick of having a high (all the way to the right) final gear and low (all the way left) top speed does seem to start as a good way to have a begenning setup. But it WILL require a good amount of fine tuning. I've you've ever seen me run in my ZZII it is based off that idea but from there it's all different.
 
Yes, I run 1/4 mile only. And I actually helped you x3S I think with suspension on that track. I always tuned my transmission, with top gear to the left and final all the way right to start. My car would still get beat though. I know it isn't my issue with suspension, LSD, or Aero. **Also, I know about the flip but I don't really know where to go with it**
 
Yup that's me hah. I assume top gear you mean top speed? What kind of car are you talking about? Or is this just in general?
 
Yes by Top gear I mean the Top Speed slider. And the cars I am having a hard time tuning are the Audi Le Mans quattro '03, and the Tommy Kaira ZZII

With tuning cars for 1/4 mile drags you need to do the following this is one of my 1/4 mile tunes:

Nissan GT-R Spec V '09
Displacement:3799cc
Max Power:868bhp/7400rpm
Max Torque:91kgfm/6400rpm
Drivetrain:4WD
Weight:1362kg
Power to weight ratio:1.54/bhp
Length:4650mm
Width:1895mm
Height:1370mm
PP:641
Colour:Maziora Mazeran

This GTR has lots of acceleration and this drag setting is set up for Road Course Indy. By the end of the straight u should hit a least around 260km.

Parts needed:
A wing
Stage 3 weight reduction
Window weight reduction
Carbon bonnet
Rigidity improvement
Sports ECU
Stage 3 Engine tuning
Sports Intake Manifold
Racing Air Filter
Sports Exhaust Manifold
Catalytic Converter: Sports
Titanium Racing exhaust
High Rpm Range Turbo Kit
FC Customisable Transmission
Twin Plate Clutch Semi Rcing Flywheel
FC LSD
Torque Distributing Centre
Cabron propeller shaft
FC Suspension Kit

That is one of my 1/4 mile drag tunes pretty much with any car for drags you take the final to the right you can take it all the way or you dont have to, then adjust the max speed to the appropraite speed then tune each gear ratio to your likes then you have a 1/4 mile tune

1. Not enough pull in gears after launch, mainly last 2/3.
2. The transition between my launch gear and the consecutive gear, has no shift lag, but it seems to lack torque. Any idears? XD

Well, as dalightning said, some cars you need to redline at the shadows, other cars do dont. You have to be in the powerband all the time, using as many gears as posible.

💡 I would suggest to shorten the last few gears to the point where you are just about to hit the rev limiter at the end of your run. Make sure not to shorten too much because the GT-R's power band is in the mid range (being turbocharged).

My ususal tactic for drag tuning for most awd cars is tuning 1st as high as possible while still achieving a quick launch, and making all the following gears as close to eachother as possible. So that there is as little gap as possible between gears and i can maintain quick acceleration.

Also, lower your car, tiny difference in top end speed there, no camber, no downforce, and no toe.

Finnaly, I would analyze the torque curve for the car,so it is easy pick the best points for a shift.

Still have to try this as most of it goes against all I have learned about dragging at Indy...

Properly tuned, GT-R is very fast. But Le Mans, ACR and Enzo are all perfectly capable of beating it so don't overlook them and stay transfixed on the GT-R as many people do.

Yes which is why my ACR's top speed is 177 when I only need to get to 166 :)

DON'T FORGET THE POWERBAND OF YOUR CAR!

Also, lower your car, tiny difference in top end speed there, no camber, no downforce, and no toe. Camber? Some may find that useful ;) Toe? You DEFANITLY need toe. Never met another fast car with no toe.

Finnaly, I would analyze the torque curve for the car,so it is easy pick the best points for a shift.

hmm i have one of the fastest enzo's at the tunnel, maybe its time i buy a new one and tune it for indy. I have something in mind.

@ cooldude3007 thanks for posting exact numbers if more people shared drag racing info more often on gt5 forums things could become alot more interesting. I myself am a complete noob to the whole drag racing thing, however I have recently taken an interest in the past few days. I have been trying to reverse engineer the transmission settings used on cooldudes GTR into my mercedes 190 e 2.5-16 evo II touring car 92' which is a completely different machine. It is rear wheel drive, 980kg and runs about 458 hp 257lb torque. The gear ratios are way different than the gt-r and the rpm is at its peak at about 9500rpm & HP 9000rpm torque while the gtr hits its peak at around 8400 rpm for HP and 5400 for torque. I really want to use this car to race with and it seems like a good candidate because of how close the powerband for torque and horsepower sit in its rpm range. Could anyone offer any pointers for this machine? I have been trying to tweak this car for 2 days with little progress however these forums are really helping alot. Thanks guys.

Won't work with that gearbox as they are two completely different beasts. Are you looking at dragging this touring car or track racing it?? :confused:
 
Is it true the GTR V-Spec 09 reach 880hp? If so how? I have tuned some cars but would be great to have expert on my side so I learn more. And I can try my tunes with you guys to see where I am. Also heard an Rs6 with 966hp? Doesn't that breaks the class from the list delightning made? Need some assistance here. My psn id is Pridelord. Hope to be able to test tuned cars with you guys.

Max hp is 868. The new R35 GTR TC's have 897hp, but you need to have the DLC for that. :)

There's plenty of decent rooms for drag, you just have to search more for the ones that say "Drag No BS or kick" or things of that nature.

Also heard an Rs6 with 966hp? Doesn't that breaks the class from the list delightning made? Need some assistance here. My psn id is Pridelord. Hope to be able to test tuned cars with you guys.

It's 956hp, not 966 for the RS6. As for testing against people from GTP, if you want to run with us at GME, look for us at SSR7....we aren't hard to find. 👍

Thanks for the info, also since I have been collecting cars none of them if not all but the ferrari 458 italia (money maker) have more than 200 miles in it. I am making my drivers do the job of getting the cars there but I am up to 614 cars the UCD keep giving me repeated cars.. or the miatas... a lot... also do you guys tune for circuits? I want to know at least a tip now that one car can have 3 settings. Would be nice to have you in my tournaments too. Giving car tickets to winner.

260kmh? Wow! Mine only gets 246 and it beats 90% of other Aussies. I must try this tune
