When Dan Wheldon died, his accident shook me. I didn’t really understand why until now. I wasn’t a fan of Wheldon, and I won’t insult his memory by claiming that I was. I knew who he was, of course, but I did not check the Indycar results to see how he fared, if you know what I mean.

But I was – and still am – a fan of Marco Simoncelli. He had a real personality about him; he was exciting and quick, and he was a breath of fresh air compared to the likes of Casey Stoner. But mostly, I liked him because of his hair. I have never seen a racing driver with half as much hair as Marco, and it always amused me a little to wonder how he managed to fit it all in his helmet. Not knowing much about MotoGP at the time, it was just that one little element about him that made me support him before anyone else. It seemed silly at the time, but now it seems strangely important.

He will be missed.

Damn, is motorsport getting hit hard. Two super stars in some of the top motorsports around passing away...RIP Marco. Brilliant biker.

You have taken what I wanted to put into words and done it for me. I'm a Rossi supporter and Simoncelli reminded me so much of Valentino, but with his own twist on it. So passionate, buzzing with energy and excitement, a real showman and the kind of guy who makes a good sport great. It's so difficult to believe what has been announced.

If my thoughts for the remainder of the day aren't with Marco and his family and friends, then I should be ashamed.

Thoughts also to Edwards and Rossi.

Rest in peace, 58.

I don't really follow MotoGP, but any death in motorsports is a sad one. First Dan now this. :(

Rest in peace Marco. A talent that will be missed.

Whoa Motorsport is having a bad month.
I was listening to the radio, and the news said that Simoncelli had died. I was so shocked.
Seeing the video, his helmet fell off, which is never a good thing.
R.I.P. Marco.

I feel devastated today. A good start ended in such a way. He will be missed by many on the grid. A massive lost to MotoGP and the world of Motorsport. Last week, we lost Dan Wheldon. This week, Marco lost his life.

I'm still uncomfortable with the reaction from the Malaysian fans. This is a very bad sight for Malaysia.

Rest In Peace Marco.

This past week has not been a good one at all. My thoughts go out to Marco's friends and family. Rest in peace.

I had that sinking feeling when I was watching the race and the crash happened. His helmet coming off and seeing him lie still face down on the track. I just wonder how his helmet came off because it's probably what killed him.

See ya, Marco, and thank you for blessing us with you ballsy riding style throughout your career.

Shocked by this. When I heard he was conscious, I thought he'd got away with it, then when the race was cancelled I knew it wasn't good, but to finally hear this?

RIP mate. The grid will be a worse place with you not on it.

Numb is all I can use to express how I'm feeling. That's 2 awesome racers gone in a matter of a week. And the fact I watched them both as it happened hurts badly. Edwards and Rossi did what they could in that small window to avoid, slow down. We should also keep Edwards and Rossi in our thoughts too.

Totally shocked, gutted and very sad about this news. Marco was a great guy, and I too also loved his hair. what a guy. We will miss you side show bob.

R.I.P Marco

I can't believe he passed away... It's not a good day for motorsport :guilty:

Rest in Peace Marco... you'll be sadly missed... My thoughts are with you and your family...

I like the pictures, it helps soften the shock somehow...

Some tributes from the world of motorsport:

British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow wrote on Twitter: "RIP Marco Simoncelli ! A great rider and all round nice guy. My thoughts are with all his family & friends. I will never forget today."

Formula One driver, Mark Webber tweeted: "R.I.P Marco A special talent that will be missed... Thinking of your loved ones, and all the motogp paddock..mark."
