Just wondering... is there a technical reason why group discussions are so limited in functionality, compared to regular threads?

No size tags, no code tags, no quoting unless done by manually copy/pasting the quote into a pair of quote tags, no ability to link to a specific post, etc.

If there's any way that this functionality could be brought to group discussions, that would be awesome. :D 👍

That's a good question; I don't know, it's an design decision that was made by the forum software's (vBulletin) developers and is part of the core functionality (or lack thereof) of the software, and I don't really like it, either.

Social groups likely will not continue to be part of the site over the long term.

Hmm, interesting. Can't say that really surprises me... most of the social groups are dead, and the small number of "active" groups have very light, infrequent activity.

When do you think you'll be axing the feature?

Yeah I agree it's a cool function but it's kinda dead...
If it requires much work to maintain or whatever then perhaps you should just get rid of it Jordan. 👍

I think it's not only the limited functionality, but also the fact that they are kind of "hidden". You don't really know about social groups unless someone advertizes them in their sig.

I'm a little disappointed to read that. I know CRAP isn't hugely active, but I like it being on here.

Darn, that's one of the few things that still hold my team together as far as communication.

Sometime this year, most likely in the summer.

That's a shame to hear.

I know, the TOCA and BST V8's Stewards Group are a couple of groups that I can mention that are active, the Private Groups also help for Stewards of Racing Series.

Social Groups are sometimes the only way to communicate and discuss things en masse. I run the groups Tom aforementioned, which includes a Stewards Panel and a group where event photo's and idea's can be trialled in a private controlled environment.

Problem is without groups you end up with an extremely hard to control and maintain level of content. People put race pics up, discuss idea's, and make decisions that maybe would not be appropriate or certainly harder to implement on a organisational level for sure.

Example: If I want to discuss a new idea about a championship with someone, and ask for feedback, putting it in a social group thread means that the 30 people (for example) in the group can view it and see it. If I put it on GTP main froum it's difficult and everyone can see it.

Of course you may say "Well why not use PM's?". Inbox's fill up quick and also there's no real chance for direct communication between large groups of people.

I think they need to stay, or else it will all become a little too chaotic.

Hmmm it is a tricky one to consider. I mean they are not a big thing on the website and if they are not used then well as my mother would say, "We will have no waste in this house (GTplanet in this case ) It is just something that is not necessary. Could you perhaps have a way in which threads could be made to invitation only where only people who are invited and moderators can access it? So for example as stated by tom and furinkazen there is a stewards social group, which if the social groups where to go would not exist anymore, they could make a thread for stewards to post their usual stuff but by invitation only. So only the people that the OP writer accepts to look at this said thread can look at it and post. Possibly only a premium benefit to restrict people who see the thread? :)

That is my thoughts on the matter anyway

Though we will eventually be losing Social Groups, I'm fairly confident you'll actually prefer the small-group-communication tools that end up replacing them. Ellisnutt is pretty close to the mark. :)

So there will be a replacement? Good news if that is the case :) , further question, will the old groups exist as a kind of archive?

Old group posts and data will be lost, but you'll have plenty of warning before that happens to prepare.

It would have to be like that I imagine? The whole point of this is to removed unused software so Deleting the things that may or may not be used would be good because the social groups that are not used would be gone. Instead of wasting space on unused groups ones that are used actively will be saved by the creators. Thus sieving out the groups of active and inactive :)

Awesome! I've spent a stupid amount of time compiling a giant list of TV shows and it would suck to lose it all without notice.

I've already got 2 locations I can move the list to so I'm good to go any time.

Contrary to popular belief, CRAP is alive and well. We are gaining members and are holding events almost weekly. Hopefully the alternative will be viable. I would hate to lose touch with the fine people I have met here.

I believe this has already occured at ForzaPlanet, as the social groups function isn't there.
