Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the original version of the iconic 911 sportscar, died today in Salzburg, Austria. He was 76.
“As creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture that molds our sportscars still today,” Matthias Mueller, chief executive officer of Porsche AG, said in an e- mailed statement. “His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will also honor in the future.”

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who created the original Volkswagen (VOW3) Beetle, designed the first 911 in 1962. He went on to develop racecars for the German automaker until leaving the Stuttgart-based company in 1972 with other family members when Porsche was transformed into a joint stock company.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Rest in Peace.

They should gather every 911 ever made (all the different models) as a tribute.

R.I.P Ferdinand Porsche

As much as I hate Porsche. The news of Ferdinand Porsche passing away is leaving a great black hole in the automotive world. But as long as the 911 lives on so will his legacy.

Never forgotten. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.

RIP. He may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on in the Porsche company and 991.

We mustn't just live in sorrow. He was a great man, a genius. He made an icon, he made a legend... He was, and always be, a legend.

My thoughts precisely. Why is it that when famous people die, it's more than one at the same time?

R.I.P Ferdinand Porsche

And I just saw him in October.
A shame he didn't see Porsche's return to Le Mans.
I'm sure Porsche will do something as a tribute. Something big...

R.I.P. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, we'll miss you. :( You will be remembered by all, but your passion will live with the 911 forever.

You were a designer, a artist and a innovator. A man who made a car so iconic. Iconic, that we enthusiasts grew up with scale cars of 911s, to putting up posters of 911s, driving them on video games, even to the day we buy the real 911, you were the inspirer to millions of car people around the world.

Long live the 911!

I hate the 911 but yea. It's his legacy r.i.p

I'm not a big fan of Porsche but kudos to him for creating a car whose design has stood the test of time and I hope he rests in piece. I'm sure they will release a 911 Ferdinand edition which will probably be amazing.

RIP Dr. Porsche.

Some may have ridiculed the 911, but there is no denying that his machines were the measuring stick for the rest to compare to.

I would argue that he has, at least, ceased at his peak - the current range of Porsches are, to me, the most breathtaking and impressive that has been ever offered. Before the newest 911, I had very little interest beyond the simply epic Carrera GT. I saw them as boring, of geriatric suitability and couldn't come to like the 'evolution rather than revolution' design philosophy. Now I believe they offer some of the most beautiful cars in the world alongside Jaguar and Aston Martin and certainly some of the most desirable. They laugh at radical alteration for a simple reason - they're already nigh on perfect. And it all started with a chap called Ferdinand. Rest in peace.
