GS-4 on my Rinoseat (Fanatec CSL)

I have recently purchased Pat Dotson's UltraForce GS-4, delivered across the world from the US to China. Pat did a custom mount for me so that I can fit it on my Rinoseat GTR (now known as Fanatec CSL).

First observations- the GS-4 is very rigidly built. It feels like a tank. No flimsy metals or parts.

The assembly is also very tidy, every part serves a function of the g-force. No part seems like it was added or plastered unnecessarily.

The PSU and the 'CPU' is built into the back of the seat, seems like Jon Ive would build this if he was a race engineer. One cable to the power outlet, one cable to USB. Very clean.

Hooking up to the PC, installing drivers (after a minor hick up where Pat came quickly to my rescue) was a breeze.

Here you can see a little video of my testing (before I mounted it to my frame).

I would like to comment about the custom-mounting that Pat made for me. I hope this will spark some ideas for others of the possibilities of having the GS-4 in your existing rig. For me at least this was a big factor because I had already invested in a Rinoseat GTR (now known as the Fanatec CSL) and didn't want to invest in a completely new rig to accommodate the GS-4.

Early on in my email exchanges with Pat (before making the first payment) I had discussed my requirements (of the custom-mounting) and he assured me that it can be done. All throughout of the process there were back and forth discussions on measurements of my rig, screw holes, seat distances, angles, etc. We also communicated via drawings and photographs to ensure all details are worked out.

When I finally received the GS-4 I was gladly relieved to learn that the mounting points to the Rinoseat/Fanatec CSL were perfect.

You can see this in the pictures below. For those unfamiliar, the black frame is the Rinoseat/ Fanatec CSL. One last thing to add, there were no modifications needed to my Rinoseat.

I've had this now for 3 days and I love the GS-4 .. if you are on iRacing you can read a little bit of my impressions here --> http://members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/2396902.page

But basically this is a piece of awesome hardware, for something so compact which was perfect for my situation.

The way I'd describe the immersiveness is if a d-box simulates how the car moves on a track, the gs-4 simulates how your body moves inside that car. If you have even been in a go-kart before, well that's how it feels. In the beginning one might be too aware of how the panel moves behind and under you but once you train to ignore that you begin to feel how natural it feels when the car brakes, accelerates, turns, spins, going over bumps, etc.

All in all VERY happy with this. Believe this will be my last major upgrade for a while.

The cost of clearing customs was RMB755.
The cost of shipment from the US to China (I used DHL) was around $300.

Why are your uploading 4.5MB pics from your Panasonic DMC-LX5 to web?

Re-size and be kind to those who don't have fat internet pipes.

At least you seemed to have turned off the geo-tagging for Fuji's rig.

Note to self: this addiction has got to stop!

Here I am using my Pivothead camera to give a 'helmet cam' view of what it's like to drive in the GS-4. I'm using headphones so the sound of the car isn't captured at full loudness. As such you hear the GS-4 quite a bit but I can assure you inside my 'helmet' it is not noticeable at all.

Extra Immersiveness:

To enhance the GS-4 I've added two things which I think others might want to consider for that little bit extra immersion.

Firstly, I have a Buttkicker 2 Gamer which I attached to the main frame of the Fanatec CSL (see above pictures as well as the one in this post). It is run via SimVibe. I've had a chance to try the GS-4 without the shaker/SimVibe, and vice versa and I can say that the sum of the two components is more than 2. This is a classic example where 1 + 1 = (at least) 4! Pat equipped my GS-4 with a TST209 transducer which attaches to the bottom of the seat, but I've put off using it because the Buttkicker 2 already gives me more than I can enjoy.

And by the way, running the shaker via audio compared to SimVibe takes it to a different level, but that's another post.

Secondly, I bought myself a 'Sparco harness' 4 point, 2" wide. The harness attaches to the back of the seat and down the right & left sides. No additional drilling is required as the seat & my rig already has conveniently located holes to hook & bolt this to. Tightening the harness over my shoulders gives a very nice feel when cornering and accelerating. The waist belt doesn't do that much but I guess it gives it the complete feel.

I guess this kind of makes my motion rig complete.
Next I will play around with the software that comes with the GS-4.

Nice indeed...

Please update with more on the motion as you experience it more.
Would be great to see the software front end, how it runs, the options and game support it has.

Your tactile immersion...
Create a small platform like Hoimann did and isolate the pedals from the rig. Then use your T209 or Buttkicker on it as an extension for engine effects. WIll work well with audio on the LFE or Centre channels.

Glad to see more GS-4's in the wild. How's the seat feel for comfort DM the padding looks a bit thin? Love how clean and neat your build looks 👍.

Enjoy your rig and thanks for sharing.

Would appreciate an update on how things are going. Can you please show the software/front end to see how you adjust and can alter the motion?

Very nice, I've been thinking of getting a seat from Pat as well. I like hearing other view points about this seat. As of now it is high on my list.

Seen other threads regarding this seat the OP had done.
Looks good but I am concerned with its long-term comfort?

My own rig will also act as my general PC gaming area. So comfort is important for my backache.

Weirdly and rather unexpectedly sold my race seat to a visitor yesterday. So with upgrades I am doing have instead bit the bullet and ordered a proper sports recliner seat. It may be a bit excessive for a cockpit but will give excellent comfort and styling.

Will keep an eye for updates on this and still be nice to see more of the software/options.
Support for upcoming titles will also no doubt see various motion brands/products looking to support them. That is also a concern as how long it may take one brand like this say to Simxperience in having support added.
