In 1923 a Chenard & Walcker piloted by A.Lagache, R.Leonard covered 1372.9miles in 24 hours at an average speed of 57.21 miles an hour in a 24 hour endurance race around Le Mans, France. 90 years later, and the event is still running, using most of the historic route including the immense Mulsanne straight. Times have changed however, and the cars are 200mph monsters, lightweight prototypes with cutting edge technology from Audi, Toyota, ORECA and Lola. They are joined by production based GT cars from Chevrolet, Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, Dodge.

It's the ultimate test of endurance, but also the ultimate test of speed. More than ever, the Le Mans 24 Hours is not just an endurance, many regard it as now a 24 Hour Sprint - every lap, every corner, everything pushed to the limit. The sight of 56 cars burning down the Mulsanne straight, weaving, moving, lights flashing, the noise from hybrid prototypes, furiously speeding through the growling Corvettes and whining Astons... it leaves a mark on anyone at the event.

2013 is in many ways end of an era at Le Mans - the last year of LMP1 before a brand new rules set in introduced for 2014. Audi return again, looking for it's 12th win in the last 14 Le Mans races. 3 R18's are on the grid, crewed by veterans such as Allan McNish, Benoit Treluyer, Tom Kristensen, and Loic Duval. Toyota showed great pace last season with the TS030. Le Mans was it's debut and it briefly lead before one car was involved in a horrific airbourne accident, and on the restart the second car was involved in crash which would prove terminal to the cars race. After Le Mans Toyota proved to be a match for Audi in the WEC, winning at Interlagos. Two cars for Toyota are entered with identical line ups from last season - Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kaz Nakajima in the No. 7 car and Stephane Sarrazin, Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi drive No.8. Also in LMP1 is the ever strong privateer Rebellion Racing squad, and the British Strakka team.

LMP2 has come a long way since it's 2004 debut. 22 LMP2 car's will be at La Sarthe. Long time entrants OAK Racing are back in there Morgan badged cars, the new Kodewa Lotus T128 will hopefully have had it's mechanical issues from this years Autosport 6 Hours at Silverstone ironed out. Signatech run an ORECA chassis that will carry the famous Alpine name with an evocative blue and orange livery. Gran Turismo fans will be cheering for Greaves Motorsport with two GT Academy graduates, Lucas Ordonez and Jann Mardenborough at the wheel. Expect a tight battle throughout the class, perhaps the one to watch this season.

GTE is also going to be special this year. It's the final year of the Chevrolet Corvette C6R before the C7 takes next year and they have two works cars, with a third Am-division Larbre run machine. The top Ferrari team AF Corse return with 5 cars, Aston Martin undergo arguably there most ambitious Le Mans programme to date with 5 Gulf-coloured V8 Vantages. Dodge return to the Mulsanne under the "SRT" banner with two V10 powered Vipers howling down the Mulsanne. And Manthey Racing, one of the worlds top Porsche teams, field two factory brand new 991-generation RSR's.

Great thread, can't wait for this year's running, it should be one to remember.

Can't believe the race is coming on 100 years. Try and imagine how different things are going to look just 10 years from now.

We're spoiled as racing fans really though. We got this year, where Toyota's really got a good shot, and all the top-flight, super experienced GT teams , and the immense driver talent there along with the Vipers, and an army of LMP2 cars. Then we get Porsche and all the new reg's next year already!

That is something I used to do with ease on race driver grid. I know it's not a realistic game but gt car passed a lmp2 is something.

But anyway it will be interesting to see him at Le Mans.

He's got a poor attitude, which is really apparent in the interviews. Not the cleanest driver, and according to others on the forum, he swindled a ton of people out of money, which now pays for his race team
 
Just a month to the race! From ACO website, as official entry revealed:

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the crown jewel of endurance racing, enjoys a special status within the FIA World Endurance Championship. Double points will be awarded for this third round of the FIA WEC, so the event on 22-23 June is a particularly important one for the drivers, and the full entry list is published today by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest(HERE).

For the teams, entry for the Le Mans 24 Hours takes place in two stages: they had up until 16th January to send in their entry form for the race and nominate one driver. By 15th May at the latest they had to inform the Automobile Club de l'Ouest of the driver line-ups, consisting of three names per entry.

On the list published today there are only 165 names for 56 cars out of 168 possible places, with FIA WEC LMGTE Pro Champions Ferrari being the only significant championship entry to not yet announce the name of the driver who will back up Fisichella and Bruni in the no. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia. The new technology, Garage 56, GreenGT entry will confirm the two who will team up with Christian Pescatori before the end of May.

This fantastic list contains 10 former outright winners who will take the start in 2013, the oldest being Christophe Bouchut (victorious in 1993 in a Peugeot 905), who will drive one of the two LMP2 Lotuses. Also present will be the most recent winners (2011/2012), Tréluyer-Fässler-Lotterer, who will be aiming for a hat trick in their No.1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

In addition to the three Audi drivers all the other 2012 winners are back to defend their crowns, whether together or separately. The victorious LMP2 winning crew has been broken up due to the withdrawal of Starworks Motorsport's entry; Tom Kimber-Smith is in the no. 41 Zytek-Nissan entered by Greaves Motorsport, Ryan Dalziel will be racing in LMGTE Pro in one of the works Vipers, and Enzo Potolicchio will be at the wheel of the no. 81 8Star Motorsports Ferrari 458 Italia.

Victorious in LMGTE Pro at Le Mans last year, Giancarlo Fisichella and Gianmaria Bruni will once again be partnered in the works no. 51 F458 Italia but their team mate from last year, Toni Vilander, will be driving the no. 71 AF Corse entry with his FIA WEC team mate Kamui Kobayashi and Monegasque driver Olivier Beretta. The third driver who will back up Fisichella and Bruni will be announced shortly.

In LMGTE Am, Patrick Bornhauser and Julien Canal, winners in 2011 and 2012, will again team up in the no. 50 Larbre Competition Corvette and will have American Ricky Taylor as team-mate, rather than Pedro Lamy who has returned to Aston Martin as a works driver.

The influx of ex-F1 aces to Le Mans continues! Last year Rebellion Racing's Nick Heidfeld returned for the first time since his 1999 debut, while Sébastien Buemi and Karun Chandhok had their first taste of Le Mans - both are back this year, the latter in the no.48 LMP2 Murphy Prototypes Oreca Nissan. Bruno Senna (Aston Martin Racing), who has had such a great start to the FIA WEC 2013 season, will return to tackle the daunting Sarthe circuit again while Kamui Kobayashi (AF Corse Ferrari) will be making his Le Mans debut.

This year there will be two woman drivers on the grid: Keiko Ihara from Japan in the Lola LMP2 entered by the Gulf Racing Middle East team that competed in the event in 2012, and the European Le Mans Series' Imola podium winner, Natacha Gachnang, (Morand Racing's no. 43 Morgan Judd) from Switzerland who raced in the 24 Hours in 2010 (Ford GT). For Natacha Le Mans is a family affair as her cousin Sébastien Buemi will be one of the works Toyota drivers, and their grandfather, Georges Gachnang, raced in the event in 1960.

And, as always, Le Mans has its fair share of talented gentlemen drivers like Patrick Bornhauser, Tracy Krohn and Jacques Nicolet who do battle all year round in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Then there is American actor Patrick Dempsey, entered in the American Le Mans Series; he will share a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with fellow-countrymen Joe Foster and Michael Avenatti.

The vast majority of entrants will take part in the one official test day on Sunday 9th June, the dress rehearsal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For new cars and for teams and drivers that have never raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours before, or who are on the list of those who haven't taken part in official practice since the 2008 race, the test day is mandatory.

Following the test, teams and drivers will all through scrutineering and administrative checks on 16-17th June, then official qualifying practice on 19-20th June before the high point of the week - the start of the 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans on Saturday 22nd June at 15h00.

Rebellion isn't an LMP2 team, so that would be kinda hard...
 
Four weeks to go to the race which can only mean one thing, we're only three weeks away from the the train-wreak TV program that is 24minutes of LeMans.
 
That does sound awful, good thing SPEED is too occupied with NASCAR to do such a thing.

Hoping one of the Corvette's can win GTE Pro, if not I hope the 71 Ferrari with Kobayashi wins.

I also am pulling for Toyota to knock off Audi in LMP1 and Level 5 in LMP2.
 
Dutch Television, RTL7, will broadcast the full race. Just like last year. Excellent. 👍
