Clean Run Challenge #8 '02 TVR Tamora at Trial Mountain Reverse.
500pp British Lightweights Seasonal

Specs : Premium 2002 TVR Tamora on Comfort Soft Tires.
No added parts.
The car will exceed 500pp after break in. Add ballast at default position and/or use Power Limiter to stay within 500pp.

Another GT Classic Track gets a visit, this time in Reverse. A car that I've overlooked for a long time from a niche sportscar manufacturer. Typical bold TVR styling with the usual low weight/high power attributes. Should be a fun ride.

THE GOAL:
Your fastest Total Race Time. The Race Events are basically Time Trials with moving obstacles (AI). Most are only 5 laps so think of it as a longer Time Trial but with other cars on track. Most races will only last 7-10 minutes. Winning the race is not the end goal-it's the Total Race Time like the latest GT5 Seasonal Overtake Challenges.

THE RULES:

1. No Driving Aids. No SRF, TCS, *ABS, ASM, Active Steering. Driving Line and Transmission Choice are optional. For inexperienced ABS OFF drivers check out this great guide: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=267564&highlight=guide+tO+no+abs

*If you are new to ABS OFF and having difficulty you may use the assist. Experienced no assists drivers are expected to not use it. There will be a separate leaderboard. Please note "ABS" when submitting. Thanks.

2. Tuning Prohibited. No added parts, ballast, weight or engine stages. We may add power if a car is too slow for a decent run but that will be very specific. Brake Balance is all that can be adjusted.

3. Tires: Comfort Softs.

4. Track Rules: Only fully clean runs. 2 wheels on track at all times. Rumble Strips are part of the track. *The white line is the boundary otherwise. No initiated AI contact. This is what will make this a REAL challenge! Avoiding other cars may be the hardest aspect. Approach the driving like it's a real life track day and you have no Auto Insurance!

*The car starts the race below the white line in the Start/Finish stretch. Since the AI uses this track area, that area is legal for insuing laps. The yellow striped areas are out of bounds since the AI does not put over 2 wheels in those locations.*

Note: To be clear on what constitutes a "clean" pass, we will use this rule from the GTP OLR:

You must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before they reach the corner’s turn-in point to have the right to drive up their inside, or to expect them to leave inside room for you. At least the front of your car should be up to the driver’s position in the ahead car. The ahead driver has the right to be fully committed to the racing line of their choice without any interference if there was no substantial overlap before he turned in.

So if you've made a clean pass according to this rule and the AI initiates contact, that is acceptable.
In some instances a pass may be accomplished by going inside the AI if they've left sufficient room. As long as you don't initiate contact, it's clean. Just use your best judgement, this is supposed to be fun!

5. 10 Maximum Clean Runs. Restarts or dirty Runs do not count toward the total. Winning the race is not necessary for a submission. No deadline for submitting a time.

This was one of my favourite seasonals and the Tamora was one of the few eligible cars that I didn't try out. I seem to remember Lewis Hamilton set a similar ABS0 challenge on this very track and I failed miserably. I failed miserably on this one too but just realised it's CS and I've been using CM, assuming it would be one grade down. Off to have another go with the proper tyres.

Edit - First clean, if somewhat messy, run - 8:51.954 for P4

Interested in the series but real life tied up with stuff... no doubt when I get some Quality PS3 time I'll put up times for the recent events... And YES no SRF.

Good luck and don't feed the Monkey.

This is a tricky little track. First sector on cold tires especially. It's tough not diving into the yellow areas but I made the dam rule, oops. Best out of 3 so far is a 8:43.237 for 2nd place. Think best laps are high 1:43's. Hopefully more to be had but my car's gaining weight. I don't know how much power it will gain or if the ballast will have an adverse effect. I usually add weight instead of dropping power as you end up losing top end.

Edit: After 6 runs down to 8:40.906. Couple of 1:44 flats and a 1:43.8xx. This track has a very tight line, not much wiggle room and bumpy.

Only 2 runs left. Snuck down to 8:40.227 with a BL of 1:43.7xx. This car rocks, I'm going to do a long Arcade Race on this track with it. See how it compares to some competition.

Same here, just getting no playing time. I've not even done this seasonal series, though I have managed to run through the 90s Japanese one.

I do like the Tamora, it's really well balanced for a TVR - not too wild. I did one full race but TM felt a bit alien in reverse: I did a loose 8:56.xxx but stepped inside on the yellow lines between tunnels. I assume these are out of bounds for the clean runs.

Edit:

Made a few attempts this morning with only one good clean race, this is a really nice combo though.

Lost time on lap 4 as I got held up through the narrow section by an Elise Type 72, then on lap 5 my kids distracted me and I lost a second :indiff:

First clean: 8:43.804

Last night I ran a 21 lap Arcade Race on TMR with this car. Set up the race on CS tires Professional Level, AI on 10. Added 75kg ballast otherwise no tuning. B/B 3/0 No ABS. The AI were M5's, Masers, Jags, Astons etc...

I let the field pass and ran the first lap as a pace lap. After that it was pretty darned challenging. The field was much faster than this seasonal. It took me about 4 laps to make my first clean pass. The AI would tap the walls on occasion allowing for a quick pass undeneath. After 21 laps I'd managed to make into 7th just behind another TVR at the finish. This was harder than the seasonal for sure. The AI would dive under me at any mistake so the whole race I was on my toes. Bumper to bumper pack racing.

Currently on 8.47.234 on my second clean run. - loads of room for improvement!

3rd clean run: 8.44.272

I kept hitting consistent 1.44.xxx after lap 1. There are some 1.43s to be had I'm sure!

8.42.338 with 4 clean runs left. I did get an 8.41 but I clipped a Griffith in the right-hander after the 1st tunnel - clearly my fault on that one:ouch:

2nd clean 8:42.325

Best lap was 1:43.175, but I was very inconsistent :dopey:, and had many restarts. Getting the feel of it though, and the Tamora is fantastic on TM.

Are you always going to be using premium cars? :S

I understand using standard makes it difficult. But honestly, most standard cars are not hard to get...

Premium cars will be used for the most part, yes. It does make availability much easier for everyone. We did run a Nissan 240Z for one challenge and I posted to purchase the car from the OCD at 0 miles.

Do you have something in mind?

I'm out of clean runs now but I squeezed a 8.39.840 - replay saved.
Key places where I made time - 1st chicane - don't brake, just come off the gas and point the nose in, maintaining 95mph then smooth accelerate towards the wall.

The left-hander after 2nd tunnel - maintain 63-67 mph through there if you get the nose in right - it's a much shallower corner than it looks.

Last 3 corners - lots of feathering the throttle to maintain speed, no braking, just ease off gas to point nose and squirt; final corner - if you get the nose in early enough you can start accelerating way before the apex.

Great event NCR, loved this one!

I might get some playtime at the end of this week. Looking forward to try this one out.
I don't have high expectations though, I haven't golded it yet. Only managed silver with the Esprit '02 with ABS on and "shortcutting" over the yellow lines :nervous:

Will see how it pans out :)

Not really. But was thinking you could run a series for a particular year and certain pp.

Was feeling like a driving god last night - late trail braking, early power, pulled off a low 8:38.3 with a best lap of 1:42.2. Realised something wasn't quite right, then found SRF was on :dunce:. The irony. It must have been left on from when my four year son had been playing. Half hour wasted

After many attempts:ill: and two clean runs, my best time is a 8:44.450

I think that I can find another second or two if I get the braking and racing lines right.

After all my attempts, I checked the mileage on my TVR, and found that my TVR now has 98 miles on the odometer. So this means that I had to throw out about 73 miles of compromised laps! Yikes!

Great fun!

Finally, after 3 1/2 hours, I managed to get 3 clean runs :scared:
My best time for now: 8:51:425. My lap times varied from 1:45xx- 1:47.xx. Had especially a battle with the 4th position, a Lotus europa 71. Always caught him up at a bad time :grumpy:

If I manage to get more consistant, I might get the time down to 8:46' maybe

I bought the Tamora new, and now I have 322 km's on the odometer. So you are not half as bad at it, as me GTsail

I have had fun so far..

^^ That's some serious dedication no1pal! Sometimes I think I'll just jump into GT5 and get a couple clean runs in and end up driving for an hour with nothing to show for it.

The next Challenge will possibly have more passing opportunities. Sticking with No SRF but moving into some faster cars. Should be up tomorrow sometime.

I'm now up to 5 clean runs.

I've been able to lower my best time to 8:41.974, which earned me 2nd place in the Seasonal race.:)

I also ran a 8:41.195 that wasn't clean, so I've thrown it out. I ran wide coming out of turn # 3 and ran thru the sand and the grass, and I also took too much of the yellow cross-hatched areas during one of the laps.:guilty:

My best runs are only getting me up into 2nd place, some 6 seconds behind the race leader. I don't even know who he is! So on my last race, I decided to drive backwards around the track so I could at least wave at the leader, and perhaps cause him to lose his edge when he see's my Tamora heading towards him.:sly: So at full-tilt on my next race, we scream past each other, going in opposite directions (like Maverick in Top Gun). I finally find out that the rabbit that I've been chasing, is a Lotus Elise Sport 190.:yuck:

I am now!:D

My Tamora now has 192.6 miles (which seems to work out to 310km's).

My Tamora has started to lose horsepower so I've had to take off some ballast!

Enjoy the Mountain!

Yeah, it's very easy spend a lot of more time on it than you originally thought you would do. Hours can just fly away :)

Today, I just spent just 2 hours. But with a little different approach. Yesterday I restarted almost every time when I failed. Today I finished most of the races regardless. I managed to get 3 more clean laps out of it: a disapointing 8:53.xx, 8:49.495 and my best:

8:47:840. I had two lap times in the mid 1:44's. One low 1:45 and two 1:46. The start and the last one. On the last lap, I caught up with the 3 pos. Lotus Elise just before the last tunnel. I just could find the gap to pass him, afraid to touch him, so I stayed behind him to the finish line :irked: probably cost me atleast a second, maybe a bit more... Oh well.. :ill:

I'm now up to 5 clean runs.

Added 224 km(140 miles) today :sly:
I absolutely enjoy the 'Mountain and the Tamora (also the no ABS)
You all got some impressive times 👍

I might look into the old callenges, and I will definitely check out the new ones.

Blast and a half. The car was very slippery and the track was a real nice reminder of how up and down the elevation changes are at Monkey World... erm I mean Trial Mountain Circuit Reverse - Tiucric Niatnuom Lairt

The trick is not to drive like a loon, good lines means good times - but it is far too tempting to try to brake a little bit later only to find yourself riding a huge powerslide that transforms lap time into tyre smoke, in one easy application.

I did have one impact - but I think it was good. I passed on the inside under the dead tree and the Monkey...
The Elise outside of me tried to take way too much speed clobbered the unyielding wall of rock... and bounced back into the side of my car. I thought I had given the Norwich native enough space to get through the corner... how was I to know he wanted to go rock climbing. (This was race 2 - 3rd lap.)

Very different after the big grip event of the Honda in Aoyama
(I am running them out of order)

good fun.

My Tamora now has... Black/Red (AC Milan Oil!)345bhp/498pp - 403.1miles
