Clean Run Challenge #9 '09 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 RM at Spa-Francorchamps on Sports Soft or Race Hard Tires. 5 Laps.
3rd Race in the Dream Car Championship Seasonal

Specs : Premium 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 C6 Race Modified.
No added parts.
A new Premium ZR1 RM came to 694hp at 1100kg 646pp. This will increase of course. Feel free to break in your car.

A perfect track for this powerful car to stretch it's legs. This Vette is most certainly a Dream Car boasting 700hp and a superbly balanced chassis. One of the best driving RM's in GT5 with an awesome soundtrack and looks to boot. The Vette holds the long sweeps of Spa like a champ and has no problem overtaking lesser Dream Cars. Enjoy this incredible track in one of Detroit and GT5's finest Dream Machines.

THE GOAL:
Your fastest Total Race Time. The Race Events are basically Time Trials with moving obstacles (AI). Most are only 5 laps so think of it as a longer Time Trial but with other cars on track. Most races will only last 7-10 minutes. Winning the race is not the end goal-it's the Total Race Time like the latest GT5 Seasonal Overtake Challenges.

THE RULES:

1. No Driving Aids. No SRF, TCS, *ABS, ASM, Active Steering. Driving Line and Transmission Choice are optional. For inexperienced ABS OFF drivers check out this great guide: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=267564&highlight=guide+tO+no+abs

*If you are new to ABS OFF and having difficulty you may use the assist. Experienced no assists drivers are expected to not use it. There will be a separate leaderboard. Please note "ABS" when submitting. Thanks.

2. Tuning Prohibited. No added parts, ballast, weight or engine stages. No aero or transmission adjusting. Brake Balance is all that can be adjusted.

3. Tires: Sports Softs or Race Hards. Specify which tires when submitting Not default Sports Hards.

4. Track Rules: Only fully clean runs. 2 wheels on track at all times. Rumble Strips are part of the track. Green painted areas are not. The white line is the boundary otherwise. *No initiated AI contact.* This is what will make this a REAL challenge! Avoiding other cars may be the hardest aspect. Approach the driving like it's a real life track day and you have no Auto Insurance!

*NOTE* For Challenges involving Race Cars, minor contact is acceptable in straight sections only. No initiated contact in corners however. No Dive Bombing.

NO track cutting! Eau Rouge is easy to accidently short cut so be careful. There's other more blatant short cuts... Just don't do it.

Note: To be clear on what constitutes a "clean" pass, we will use this rule from the GTP OLR:

You must establish substantial overlap with the car ahead before they reach the corner’s turn-in point to have the right to drive up their inside, or to expect them to leave inside room for you. At least the front of your car should be up to the driver’s position in the ahead car. The ahead driver has the right to be fully committed to the racing line of their choice without any interference if there was no substantial overlap before he turned in.

So if you've made a clean pass according to this rule and the AI initiates contact, that is acceptable.
In some instances a pass may be accomplished by going inside the AI if they've left sufficient room. As long as you don't initiate contact, it's clean. See Note above for Race Car Events. Just use your best judgement, this is supposed to be fun!

5. 10 Maximum Clean Runs. Restarts or dirty Runs do not count toward the total. Winning the race is not necessary for a submission. No deadline for submitting a time.

Sports tires with 700hp-have you lost your mind? Well possibly but give it a shot. SS tires have plenty of grip-I've been running SS and SM tires on non LMP Race Cars with no aids since the last physics updates. Plus the AI is slow here.

I did a couple runs against the Zonda field taking the lead in lap 4. The Jag rabbit is more challenging to catch. Total times were in the 11:42's with a brand new car. Each run the car got more powerful, I'm not sure how high it will go.

I ran a B/B of 4/1 on modded DFGT pedals.

One rushed race with DS3: didn't find grip a big problem, a little understeer into some corners perhaps and the DS3 triggers are not ideal for throttle and brake on this one. Had some brake release oversteer and only managed one trip around La Source that wasn't sideways :dunce:. I changed BB from 5/2 to 5/1 but 2 rear should be ok with pedals.

I had a couple of offs and one minor shunt - full race was in the region of 12:15 so plenty to work to do. Another one for me that needs a wheel session - going to have to fit a lot in to the next one!

Another good choice though NCRthree 👍

Looks like the peak power is 714hp
Had one sitting in my garage with 701hp. Had ca. 270 km's on the odometer.
When I finished up it was down to 698hp. Took it back for a oil change, and it came out with 714hp.

My first lap I did 13:15.xx with lots of spin outs. Had the B/B at 4/2. I put it back to 4/1 which made the car much better 👍

My next couple of laps I did a few seconds over 12 minutes (some shunts and off track) Its alot easier to make clean passes here than the last challenge. But as you said in OP NCRthree, its very easy to "accidently"cut the chicanes too much.

Managed one clean lap for now: 11:54:694 Its very much room for improvements.

Finally got a clean bunch of laps together. Total 11:34.610. BL of 2:17.615. Ran against the Jag field. Caught him in lap 4 but he's fast in the straights. Only took 2 hrs of my evening! So many restarts trying to push too hard then just tried to get a complete set of laps and had my best (only) clean run. Not an AI was so much as scratched in the process.

Still at 4/1. It does push a bit especially now it's broken in. Stupid fast car this one.

Struggling to keep this beast on the track. I did an 11:59 but put four wheels off the track on the penultimate lap, braking too late trying to get down the inside. Gutted. Where's srf when you need it.
This was my first proper go with a G25 I picked up on ebay so I'm still getting used to the feel of the brakes, when I remember which is the brake pedal that is. Invariably, when I start after a break, first corner I stamp on the clutch and go sailing on into the wall. Luckily this has never happened in real life.

Edit -
That was late last night after half a bottle of wine. Today it feels much easier. Did an 11:56.502 clean, first attempt against the Jag up front. I kept getting held up behind the AI on the twisty bits, but kept my cool and waited for a safe passing place. On these tyres I can't afford to be doing any risky stuff in the corners. I'm going to try a different grid and see if that helps.

Edit - 11:50.560 to win against the Zonda. This grid pans out much better for me in terms of passing opportunities.

I haven't managed a clean run yet!! I'm finding the AI are in awkward places for a clean overtake and Blanchimont keeps turning to ice just as I arrive!!!. Pace is around 2.20.xx per lap. Throttle modulation even in 3rd gear is so necessary.

^Yeah, I had a similar experience last night. An hour with one clean run but it was a couple seconds slower.

I'm thinking the Jag lineup will give a faster overall time. If it's timed right you can draft the Jag up Eau Rouge and get some top end boost. Been able to pass him there on lap 4 on a good run. A decent lap 1 for me has been a low 2:19 mostly 2:20's. After that it varies- a few high 2:17's but mostly 2:18's and 2:19's for good laps. Traction hasn't been a problem-it's mainly staying within track boundaries with understeer.

Saturday night I'd raced with an online group for 2 1/2 hours in a Roadster TC on RM's. Then jumped into the Vette and tried to drive. Ha!

In retrospect maybe should have gone with RH's. I imagine it's tough on a controller user. The car was so fast it was easy to pass the field so I went with the SS's without too much testing. Apologies to anyone needing to replace a smashed device!

Just came across this, what an excellent idea for a challenge. Just had a few runs, only clean one coming in at 11:59:254. Fastest lap 2:23:751. 2nd to the Jag LM. Lot of fun trying, only Q is why the 10 run limit?

The 10 run limit is to keep these from becoming too obsession oriented. As it is I think I've only done 10 runs once if that. So far on this one I'm up to 4 and that's with about 3 hours total. After you do a few of these, the desire to keep restarting and restarting fades quickly at least with me it does. Glad you're taking part, enjoy.

I did some races during the weekend, and made 3 more clean runs. My best was 11:46:864. Lap times varied on this run from 2:20 to 2:22 (three in the low 2:21). Had the Zonda LM as the leading car, so it was an easy win.

Blanchimont is challenging for me as well, but not so much for grip, but more for finding the right speed and turn in for maxiumum speed thru the corner(if that make sense?) Its easy to go wide and outside the track.

The Vette is a beast, and I usually try to avoid 2. gear as much as I can and short shift up to 3. Because I have spun around too many times.. :irked:

Still enjoying this challenge, as my Vette has racked up 700 km since friday :D

I should have read more closely, I missed the "dirty runs don't count" bit :-) I spent about 90 mins on it last night, thoroughly enjoy Spa. Will have another crack at it tonight, the Vette is one of the nicer sounding cars I've drove recently.

OK, the SS tires look to attributing to more difficulty for controller users than I thought. I hate for these to be too difficult or not fun so the tires can be Race Hards if you like. Sorry for the confusion, these Events are a work in progress and I want them to be enjoyable for everyone. I'll pm those who have submitted times.

Edit: Just tested out the RH's. Much better control but it's still a beast if you're not careful. It helped with understeer a lot. Ran against the Zonda. It turns into a mostly solo TT but it's still fun to master Spa with 700+ hp.

Thanks for the heads up :)
Won't have time to try again before the weekend. I'm curious to see how much time will improve.

Cheers for the PM thing I'm running well behind on these - but they are good fun and always good to read others tips on how they extracted a bit more speed, a little less frustration.

Nothing stopping people from running both grades of tyres - and then you can compare how much they improve with Racey rubber.

Ah, much better on Sticky shoes. Raced against the Jag lineup and was determined to pass him on lap 2. Did it but the replay ratted me out. Was so hell bent on getting by, I went way off and conveniently forgot about that en route to a 11:17.160 total with every lap in the 2:15's. Even muffed turn 1 twice when alone.

Before that a 11:18.481 was all clean yielding a 2:14.382 against the Zonda field. Anyway, the Vette is more enjoyable on Race tires. A beast. The car looks like a F1 compared to the AI speed in the replays.

Ah, much better on Sticky shoes.

Merciful relief

I got an evening with my wheel, so warmed up with a go each on the TVR at Trial Mountain and the Evo at GVS. Just about got the hang of it again (no improvements though) and headed to Spa in the Vette with Sports Soft.

I had a field with the Jag rabbit but it took me about five restarts before I stopped playing Demolition Derby with an NSX at Radillon, and decided to hang back and then take him on the inside at the top of the hill. The first lap was a tricky one, and I lost count of the restarts (many only making as far as La Source:dunce:). I did 3 complete but DQ races and started to get the feel for passing places, but the car was still a fight - mainly the understeer.

Repeatedly saying to myself "DO NOT ACCELERATE ON THE CURBS", I bagged two clean races on the Sports Soft: 11:57.877

It was late by this time but I'd seen the update, so had a go with Race Hard tyres. Much better - the understeer is really minimized and I had a lot more confidence with the car. I did a clean race in 11:52.xxx but was losing the will to live by this stage :dopey:.

A couple more attempts today with a different Jag-led line up saw a third clean Race Hard run of 11:44.958, 0.6xx behind the Jag and BL low 2:19. I had 690 ish BHP after the final race. I was getting badly held up on lap 2, and losing around 2 seconds.

Still not great but I was enjoying this, rather than arguing with the car and I was making improvements, but have run out of time for now.

Nice one Woodski:tup:
I just couldn't get a decent clean run on the SS tires.
But with RH tires I got a clean run:

11.34.828

Well it isn't going to set the lap board alight but I'm chuffed with that one! Still got 8 more clean runs to go!!!

Nice time on RHs there NCR:drool:

Edit:
11.31.021 Yay!!!
Had the Jag rabbit. Overtook the orange RX8 just before the kink onto the Kemmel straight after radillon - everything just fell into place from then on.

I'm backing Giulietta on that one, impressive time NCR

I tried a couple of more times with SS, with no luck, before I changed to RH. Man, that definitely made a world of difference. Felt much more secure. Though I only made one clean run. It came at my second try, after quitting my first race after a two laps. This was with the Jag up front:
11:42:578

It was a very conservative run, waiting behind cars for safe passes. Opening lap at 2:22, then two laps at 2:20 and two laps in th low 2:19. Came in just a couple of seconds behind the Jag.

Then I made a few dirty laps which went faster and faster. Around 11:35.
Thougt I made a clean run with the time of 11:33:935. I heard that the Jag bumped in to me when I passed him :nervous: So I checked the replay.

I passed him just after Bruxelles coming in to turn 9, the left hander towards the straigth to Double Gauche. Unfortunately I had the outside line beside him coming in to the left turn, and I cut him off. :guilty:

I love this track, and the Vette is a seriously quick beast :)

Two goes on this today (How far behind am I!)

The event is on the edge of falling off the edge of the seasonals... so If you have been lazy or delayed like I have been, RACE NOW!!!

Got my new Vette - RM'd it, 964/1100kg and 646pp -

to Walonia!

I painted the car Orange - Aztec Orange and the wheels too... (Blanchimont-ezuma's revenge?)

Turned off the aids, slipped on 3/2 BB and fitted SS tyres (I noted down the regs on a piece of scrap paper ages ago... hope SS tyres are right.

I Had an XJR9 on pole.

2m22.870
2m23.049
2m22.524
2m21.677
2m22.142
11m52.262
6.614 down in second place.

Car felt okay. It was a balance to drive. All in all good fun. I was getting a lot of low gear wheelspin and slight oversteer into corners when I put in too much for corners, but the car felt nice enough that you can get it back, but it seemed to react slowly and overheat the tyres when I did over cook a corner.

Traffic was tough at times. I made one pass that was terrible down the inside at Rivage and the Z-LM just sort of gave up on it. Otherwise I seemd to always catch a car in the middle of a corner.

But I was done with most of the grid by lap 3 start... save the XJR9 I did catch it up but not fast enough.

Second go.
2m23.053
2m20.570
2m22.450
2m21.019
2m20.544

11m47.636 (Race time)
2.765 down in second (XJR9)

Fast second lap due to a great Eau Rouge (As in no car in the way!) and a good slip stream out of Stavelot back up the hill to Blanchimont.

No corner cutting, always a wheel inside the white line - (After Today s GP I almost avoided putting a wheel on an apex curb just so I didn't get a Pirelli moment. Silverstone 2013)

Lots of time to get, I know I am very cautious here as I was pushed for real life time and these two goes were going to be all I had today. That said the AI cuts the final chicane like a real driver... ho hum

Very enjoyable. but SS and My grid sort of put 10 of the AI miles behind and the Jag way out ahead.

Maybe the next grid I will have no Jag... The amount of time I gained I would expect a 3rd try I could just reel in the Jag... and once you get close you get drafted along "...all the way to victory lane" As Pete Aron said.

45 miles on the Vette now. I think the power and PP values are the same.

I know now! My old school scrap of paper just had the basics on the last few events... The LanEvo is one I've looked at and avoided, not keen on 4wd cars - (even a Lotus 63, well maybe not a Lotus 63 now I think about it.)

Oddly the replay said I was using Sporty Hards... but I am sure I bought some softies for the car.

And to rub it in, when I start GT5 again those 45 miles have gone from the clock...

May try Racey hards, but the balancing act on SS tyres was - enjoyable. Spa can be pretty light on that when you have too much grip.

I'd be best running 1 go with RH's - then seeing if I can get close with SS tyres.

Okay ran again... still sunny - must be a fantasy track This bit of Belgium tends to be wet more often.

Race Hards.

2m21.195
2m18.350
2m17.899
2m17.437
2m19.352
11m34.122 (RH)
1st by 8.986 seconds

XJR9 on pole.

Not much fun, the other cars are very slow in the corners compared to the vette on race tyres... I got caught out once (Restarted) after I expected the AI to take Les Combes at some sort of pace, but they seemed to back off massively and I was miles behind them.
Catching the Jag was all too easy and I took it easy on the final lap.

Reverted to SS tyres and ran the race again.
More fun as I had to balance the car more in the corners.

2m22.195 (+14.3)
2m22.009 (+11.3)
2m20.075 (+7.5)
2m19.322 (+3.7)
2m20.980 (-1.4)

11m44.581 (SS)

Much more fun, I felt I was pushing harder but I was stuck in traffic more, I did get some very lucky breaks. I went for a pass on the right after Les Combes and into the Right of Malmedy... the Fairlady LM must have seen me and just gave up on the exit of the final Left of Les Combes... I thought I was being pretty brave to try for a pass and the AI just gift wrapped it.

Replay of this track is great, really nice angles.
