Do you like The Red Bull Hangar,
but hate it's stupid color changing lights?
Well just about everyone does. But Now, you can control it!

There may be a few ways in doing this, such as just removing the color or white balancing,
but I've found a way that's much simpler and doesn't affect the image's exposure or color toning!

Here's how to do it.

Step 1: Position your shot at RBH, get your exposure and everything set,
and simply take 3 shots without changing anything. One of the blue lights, one of the red, and one of the green. Like so,

Step 2: Open one of them in Photoshop/Paint.net/GIMP. Then add the other 2 as seperate layers over top, like here.

Doesn't matter which order they're in.

Step 3: Change the top 2 layers to Lighten or Darken.
Lighten will turn the Lights to White, while Darken will turn them off.

Step 4: Edit! There you go, perfectly white/off lights at RBH with almost no distortion to the image itself.

But is white a little too boring? What about Yellow? Or Magenta, or Cyan?
Well now you can do that too! Just mess around with adding layers over top of each other with the Lighten/Darken modes,
you can just about control the lighting to anyway you'd like!

But, You want to shoot inside? Still no problem! But do you have a slight purple tint to your shot?
Repeat 1 and 2, and here's where it gets tricky for Step 3.

to correct that, You must over saturate the green level by 25,
or whatever removes the purple tint, and it'll look a lot better, like this.

To Darken though, is even more odd! You don't even need a green shot!
Simply just have a red and blue, and set one to Darken and voila! Lights off!

Here's a few more examples of White Lights and Lights off, for a better comparison.

Be Sure to post your results and shots too!

Sooo simple. Never thought about that. Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. 👍

Does it work inside the hangar too?

Yep, should work inside as well as long as you get a shot of each color.

I'm shooting a couple tests now, with Chrome/matte and inside, just to assure there's no limits.

Inside, it's a bit odd... You'll have to mess around with which layers are Lighten and which are Darken...

This is an quick try. Nothing special. :dunce:

I set the two top layers to "screen" at 100% (in Photoshop), which gives a nice base to work on. A bit light, but nothing, contrasts, brightness and exposure adjustments couldn't fix.

*Yes i know it's a bit overscharpened..........still working on a way to make the sharpness cleaner. :dopey:

This is definitely a "Now why didn't I think of that?" kind of a thing :dunce:. Will have a few goes at this, shame you gotta wait for 3 shots to process but a small price. Nice one gtuned 👍

Great example too K.O.S. :)

Nice shot mate. Have you tried the high Pass filter sharpening?

Duplicate your image, go to Filters> High Pass and set it to between 2 and 4 then change the layer to overlay and adjust the opacity. Give a slight pop to the highlights too but don't over do it!

The unsharp mask tries to sharpen every pixel while the high pass tends to sharpen detail a bit more. Give it a try, nothing to lose.

Nothing special, just a quick experiment.... interior shots worked ok for me on the first 2-3 steps, perhaps the 'colour order' makes the difference 👍

Will try some more "creative" shots with this method in the near future :sly:

Good shots KOS and CC, And the interior can be tricky. Some shots I did didn't need the oversaturation, but some did. I think if you have AE lock on, you won't have to oversaturate.

Excellent idea gtuned, Thanks a lot for sharing your skills. I must try this with a panorama, Very nice pictures 👍
